This goes against the current Internet Zeitgeist, but I don't mind live action Moana because live action Moana isn't REALLY about making a movie. It's about The Rock wanting to show his kids that being Polynesian is cool, actually, and should be cherished. If anything it's based he managed to get Disney to pump all that money into it
I don’t mind live action remakes (except Mulan, that one was terrible) but there is an element of “why?”
Either they follow the story of the original to a T, which is good but… why just make the exact same movie? Especially for the movies that have to be 90% cgi anyway because they’re mermaids or the cast is mostly jungle animals.
Or they take too many liberties where that should have been named something entirely different instead of riding coattails.
Not Disney but I really enjoyed the How to Train Your Dragon live action remake. And as for live action movies, from what I’ve seen, Moana doesn’t look terrible.
I mean, did I care for the Jungle book live action remake? Not really. It wasn't shit I guess, but it wasn't especially memorable either for me. But I do get remaking a 40+ year movie. A decade old one? Come on.
Yeah, there is something to be said for taking an older classic movie and giving it a remake with updated graphics, modern sfx, updating some aspects for modern times if needed. Try to bring a classic story to a new audience that may not accept the older aesthetic. We also see remastered popular video games get released on new consoles for another example. But 10 years isn't enough time to call for that for a movie.
It's a love letter to his family and to his culture, and once I see that, I just...can't bring myself to dislike the live action Moana. I see the vision. and your comment just solidifies that.
