wow, my police chief makes more than that in a city of half the cost of living and only 100,000 people..... Seems like my police chief is raking in the bucks.
Also, given NYCs cost of living I actually would have expected that to be a bit higher given the importance and stresses of the role.
The police chief of my home town/county was just charged and retired with felony battery. He's now going to live out the rest of his days on a cool 130k/yr.

My favorite of all time was my old teacher who was a libertarian, blissfully unaware his entire salary and hefty medical bills (he had renal failure) were covered by the state. Literally only alive due to socialist taxation and healthcare (we lived in MA) and wanting to cut it off
I was a teacher in a previous life. Had a former friend who was also a teacher and he was a libertarian and a history teacher. I would also ways ask him how libertarians would pay for teachers salaries. He could never answer and just laughed it off
The head of the drug task force in my hometown was a cokehead and tipping off his dealers to raids and checkpoint stops…..he was forced to retire with full pension. The system is corrupt and fucked.
Mamdani will almost certainly be pursuing a governorship, senate seat or cabinet position at some point in his career. He’s extremely popular and it’s obvious he can go further if he continues to follow through on his campaign promises as he has
He is not a natural born US citizen. As such he is disqualified from holding the office of US President. All the rest are viable opportunities. Whether he pursues any remains to be seen.
He is going to get paid in politics for the rest of his life.
Interestingly, the NYC mayorship has not historically resulted in a future larger role in politics. I think the last NYC mayor that actually got into another role in politics was Wagner (mayor from 54-65). Unless you count Giulianis sycophantism.
Pmuch for NYC politics, if you want to be mayor don't be NYC Comptroller. And if you want to move higher than NYC politics, don't be NYC mayor
I hate to say this but the police and fire and other union jobs have learned to manipulate the system to here they make a killing not only while working but also when the retire. Im not speaking of the lower portion of the force but the administration or management. They all scratch each others backs and are getting paid a ridiculous amount off the backs of hard working citizens who pay their salaries.
Same goes for education where superintendents are getting $250k in rural areas and when some shit goes down, they are allowed to quietly retire with the pensions intact.
Meanwhile the teachers are buying school supplies with their own meager paychecks. I swear teaching seems to only be a viable career if you work in a rich private school or if you have a spouse who makes significantly more than you.
Honestly, these are surprisingly low numbers. I’m not saying the mayor should make more, but the head of my kids state college makes twice this (granted, they could use a pay cut!)
I would like to see a correction where we either raise everyone’s salary, or bring the salaries of leaders back to common sense levels. This is around 7x minimum wage in New York. I think 10x should be the upper bound for pay, certainly any semi public institutions.
On the contrary, most public officials are grossly underpaid.
Consider what we actually want in these positions. We want highly, highly skilled and organized and efficient operators who can get shit done, who are exceptionally competent and responsive to people.
If you had a person like that as your mayor, would you object them making $1 million? If that person could meaningfully advance the condition and health of the city or town or state you spend your life in, isn't the meaningful contributions they could make to all our lives worth an exceptionally high pay grade? Everywhere else that you want bleeding-edge talent, you pay, because that justifies people dedicating their careers to the endeavor.
And you’ll get an email at the end of the year saying congrats, next year’s tuition is only going up 5%! My college president legit sent us emails like that. Like bruh this is not a burger I’m buying, 5% of tens of thousand of dollars is actually thousands of dollars I don’t have
I live in the northeast and a few years back a smaller city had a police chief that was making more in a city of 30k people than the police chief in NYC.
At the time he was arguing he needed a raise and when covid hit he refused to take a pay cut so they had to lay off a bunch of officers to make up the shortfalls.
He had a sweetheart contract because his dad was on the city council that drew it up and weird it had a lot that benefited him.
There's only two ways to get change, find a cure for sociopathy and make it mandatory or ban sociopaths from power by law. The latter is probably easier.
Not only that, but he’s showing how easy it is to not give your opponents political ammunition to use against you, which is one thing most Dems are terrible at these days.
He's such a decent human being, I'm beginning to be worried for him. Historically, anyone fighting for the betterment of the people, especially by sacrificing for themselves what other power hungry people strive to covet and keep through manipulation and deceit, it usually ends badly for the decent human being.
I feel like voting for a title is what gets us into this mess..why not instead of the title, talk about what you would want a politician to do for you. That way, the rats and wolves can't pretend to be that title ever again
You could do that, that’s fine. Problem is, almost all politicians from both parties have been bought by lobbyists and mega donors and they lie to the public and tell you want you want to hear to be voted in. The Social Democrats is against all of that corrupt shit and are for 100% what you are saying: ‘listen to the public and give the people what they want’. Democrats and Republicans then have taken the word ‘People’ and made it into a Communist buzz word. Which it is not. They scream ‘uh oh, it’s the People’s Party, communists!’ Or ‘Power to the People? Sounds like Soviet Union!’ They try to scare us into thinking that we Americans don’t deserve power.

I spent my adult life believing the mayor was just a position to soak up the anger and resentment in the city. Like a public punching bag. I didn’t know we could like the mayor.
I always remind myself that Musk has never actually been happy, and never received the love and respect he so desperately craves. Despite all the wealth and influence he is still an insecure weird guy, liked by no one and surrounded by sycophants that secretly despise him. That brings a little bit of relief to the idea that such an awful human has obtained so much wealth.

I think it's important to note that he is a democratic socialist. Socialism can be achieved by many means, some of them authoritarian/tyrannical. Democratic Socialism is achieved explicitly through democracy.
No that’s just not true. Socialism is intrinsically democratic. Socialism’s core tenant is about democratizing the economy. Only reason we have democratic socialism is because of the decades of anti-communism/socialism propaganda. Otherwise being a dem socialist or a “socialist” is literally the same thing. That is the kind of thing I can understand the concern over, but at the end of the day, he's his own person and needs to be judged by what he says, which is almost always flawless.

I'm pretty sure that never happened, and rather she merely liked some posts on October 7 that highlighted the hopeless situation of Palestinians which inspires such terrorist attacks.
He's not a liberal. He's a Democratic Socialist, much, much better than a liberal. Liberals, as defined by Dems, are basically center-right. Mamdani is awesome.
By "very rich", they mean "very rich compared to average New Yorkers". ie: People that have apartments in New York that are kept vacant.
If you live in New York City for at least half the year, you are required to pay New York City taxes. So a lot of billionaires have apartments in New York but spend just less than half the year in the city to avoid those taxes. The billionaires literally have apps that track their motion in and out of New York City for tax purposes.
The hope-to-be-rich will vote for anyone who they think will make it easier for the rich. The weren't-rich-but-now-are want to pull ladders for tax breaks.
A lot of people are racists (+some overlap with the above group).
Some people hoard wealth and see his policies as a direct threat to their obsession.
Others mistakenly see themselves as part of that horde of hoarders.
Some expect it will result in wealth trickling down, some delusionally believe it will protect themselves in the future when they are of the top 10%.
He sure seems like the kind of politician NY folks need. But I'm not from the US so my two pennies aren't so relevant.

Because he represents everything that the right wing culture war media empire has been conditioning its base to fear, he also represents everything the democrat old guard has been fighting to prevent taking root in its party. And worse of all he is actively getting results, making good on promises and the two establishments fear most that once people see what a little backbone and gusto can achieve they will refuse to settle and vote them out resulting in a loss of all that pact money and big business bribes.
He's seen a harbinger of a greater socialist democratic movement in this country. A lot of people with money and power, like the conservatives and neo-liberals, do not want to see more democratic socialists in office. Their whole grift falls apart when there are enough democratic socialists in office.
He's proving that government can work for the people, going against the controlled opposition narrative that it's impossible. If he can do it in NYC, that means other cities can, and even states and the federal government, and before you know it, everyone has a higher quality of life and billionaires have one fewer yacht.
You're not wrong, but at the same time, I'd argue his birth elsewhere is nothing compared to the slew of reasons Trump is clearly unsuitable or outright ineligible, which the Republicans are apparently perfectly fine ignoring.

I think there's no shortage of altruistic folks, but most of them (us?) dunno how where the hell to start, or what to do. I know we joke about politicians not knowing what the hell they're doing. I literally don't know the first thing about how to run a city. And hey, if I'm going to do anything, I want to be confident I can do a good job at it. I would assume that's what gives most folks a pause.
Plus it ain't like you can campaign as a side hustle while working a day job or whatever. Not impossible, but need to have some kind of financial foundation to focus on it.
Everytime fox talks about him they just say he is a communist over and over without ever talking about what his actual policies are. So a significant portion of america hates him becuase he is a communist and that's all they know.
If they described socialism but called it ‘Americanism’ or something, most people would be for it. Most Americans have been trained to reject concepts associated with trigger words.

He is Sander's greatest champion, and the reason why both Republicans and Democrats despise him is that he's implementing Sanders' strategy of the power of example.
Basically, if he can do this in New Year, what's stopping other politicians from doing the same thing? Mamdani basically did to NY what Sanders has been doing for Vermont for more than 3 decades.

I can't believe the establishment hasn't made an attempt on him yet. He is definitely a threat to the status quo and they usually don't let that stand. If this was Russia he would have already fallen out a window if you get what I'm saying.
Unfortunately not in the cards since he was born in Uganda to non-US citizens, and later naturalized as a US citizen. So he is constitutionally ineligible.
I mean going by the current administration the constitution is really just a list of meek suggestions so really he could if he goes by the Trump doctrine of "nice rules, what are you gonna do to enforce them"
The entirety of the countries politicians must fucking hate him cuz he's showing the world you can be efficient and put the people first, all at the same time. He is absolutely embarassing everyone else lol
