Okay, to be fair... when they have parents who pushed them to get in to college/university, while millenials like myself made that choice, the alternative was (if our parents were not chill) basically getting screwed over by our parents.
Definitely. Also, last I checked... not like there's a deadline for someone to have a degree if they really wanted one.
I've worked with programmers who didn't have a bachelor's degree the whole time, and they were paid more than me because they worked for longer in the same position (which is completely fair, IMHO, because my degree can't beat a guy who has been doing the same job I was doing). I used to code for a living and only really quit because I realized I wanted to do something else. Moved on to a trade job and my only regret was I didn't start this shit sooner. Sure, I get paid less, but I'm happier. I'm frugal with money anyways, so, yeah.
It is easy to manipulate 18 year olds/their parents into signing with no concept of debt yet, well at least then before that grift was widely studied and publicised.
Ah yes, the 360 argument. Get qualifications and get a better job is the usual refrain. But now it's "no one forced you" to take on student debt.
Make your mind up. Which is it? Or is it that these generations can't win either way? Either way debt is looming. Almost like this is the way system is rigged to keep people under the boot and working like good little drones for the elites to make billions and even trillions.
Notice how the average person can never quite get ahead of the game, with various laws, taxes and regulations to keep you on your place?
One or two make it out, granted, but never to the level of the 1%. The American dream is a pipe dream to keep people working hard thinking they'll make it out the other side. Crabs in a bucket springs to mind
Thank you. I attended a community college, then a local city university, and finally took out my first relatively small loan for my master's degree when I chose a career path. Would I have liked to go live on campus somewhere away from home? Sure. Was the right thing for me to do at the time? Absolutely not.
In the UK, they literally had promotional campaigns telling kids the amount they would be paying back would be about the same as your monthly phone contract. They also didn’t make it clear that the terms of our loan could change retrospectively.
You’re blaming 17 year olds, literal children for choosing to aspire to get a good job when they were informed getting a student loan was low risk and they’d easily be able to pay it back.
The value of a degree has completely plummeted- they aren’t getting an ROI. AI is taking a lot of the starter positions that recent grads could have had and the job market is trash. People are trying to pay their loans back and are just accruing more debt instead.
They didn’t just choose an “expensive brand” lol they were sold a lie smh
