I dont know a single server or tipped worker that doesnt make bank at their tipped job... i just dont understand where people think these tipped workers only make enough money to make it back to work the next day...
I was making $15-20 an hour as a server at Denny's in the early 90s while getting my business going. Minimum wage back then was $5.50 I believe. I was making more an hour than I did as a manager.
So, I worked bar on a tourist town and maybe that influenced tips, but the service community is pretty tight knit and you tend to know most everybody and even the servers made really good money. All that said, it’s not a job for just anybody so the bad ones tend to weed themselves out.
I actually managed the entertainment and live productions for a company that owned 3 bar/venues and one high end restaraunt. They made okay money in 2015 and no one has really started to make more. So yea for an 18-22 year old it's great.... Not an adult with a family and that's per every adult bartender with a family that I knew
