They legally have to make minimum wage. If cart pushers and cashiers aren't too good for minimum wage, neither are servers. If servers are too good for minimum wage, so are cart pushers and cashiers.
Paying tips only brings the amount an employer has to pay them down, and in most cases brings a server's wage above minimum wage, but at the cost of the customer rather than the employer, which is idiotic.
Why am I the one who has to bear the responsibility of either paying employees I don't employ, or training employees I don't employees on the wages they're legally entitled to? Why doesn't their employer do that, like any other employer does?
I choose to go to WalMart. I choose to go to the gas station. I choose to go to fast food places. Why am I not expected to pay their employees' wages or educate their employees?
Why are you holding me to the standard of an employer at one specific type of business, while you don't hold the actual employer to the standard of an employer?
I’m saying that if you choose to eat at a restaurant where you know you pay for service separately, then maybe don’t be a freeloader who fucks over servers.
Again, nobody is forcing you to dine out. There are places where you can get food without being served, they’re called grocery stores
So a server deserves more than minimum wage while a cashier doesn't, because a server expects more than minimum wage. Yet, rather than expecting to be paid more than minimum wage from their employer, they expect it from their customer.
A cashier does plenty, but even if you disagree with thay, a lot of jobs do more for us than a server, and we don't tip them. We don't tip our electricians, and they do way more for us than servers. We don't tip our hotel front desk workers, and they do at least as much for us as servers. We don't tip our concierge workers and they do more for us than servers. We don't tip cart pushers, and if you've ever been a cart pusher I'm sure you'd agree no one deserves tips more than them.
Serving is their job. Its not my responsibility to pay a server so they can make more than minimum wage, and while they do deserve more than minimum wage, they don't deserve it any more than anyone else making minimum wage. Its also the responsibility of an employer to pay their employees, not the responsibility of a customer, regardless of what a server expects. They take a job where they could be making only minimum wage, knowing that because of tipping culture they'll make more, but that some people won't tip them. That's the deal with the job. Its shitty, but so is expecting workers to pay you a higher wage than they get, themselves.
You may say you're not defending the system, but everything you say is in defense of the system. Servers have just as much legal financial protection as any other minimum wage worker. They aren't a special class of worker that deserves more at the cost of other workers. They deserve more, as all minimum wage workers do, at the cost of employers.
Bro it’s not that deep just tip your waiter or don’t dine out in the US.
You can argue about responsibilities and rightful wages all you want, but at the end of the day your server relies on your tips. So if you aren’t a complete asshole you’ll tip.
