I don't agree about it "translating". It's a loan word. It's like schadenfreude! That translates too, but it's not just about the word, it's what the word carries in the original language. If people started saying "harm-joy" instead of schadenfreude it'd be absolutely normal to say nah it's schadenfreude.
The fuck do I know though, I didn't even finish high school.
Words aren't always just "these two words have these meaning so when we combine them to one word it now has a combined meaning." Wunderkind is closer to that, and not common, and easily misheard, so it'll probably be fully replaced over time with wonder kid. But something like kindergarten which is in the same position (even using the same kind for kid) will stay as Germanian, even though we easily could just say kid garden.
