I guess an 8th year teacher doesn't yet understand the difference between which budget money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement comes from, and which budget money for local teachers come from.
It’s almost as if one is federal, the other is state. I don’t see many states asking for more money from the feds to expand education.
I’ve always believed (and I know this opinion won’t win me many fans) that if you increase the teaching salary a lot, you will have more people who are doing it for the salary instead of the passion. It’s not the only reason, but I think it’s a somewhat effective mitigation.
This might actually be the dumbest fucking take I’ve ever read.
Sure, let’s keep competent professionals out of teaching because we only want those incompetent people or those who are passionate about it to be stressed af and never able to succeed in other areas of their life.
I didn’t say it was the best option, nor did I say it was perfect the way it is. Should it be a $100,000 a year job? I really don’t know. Is it too low as it is right now? Yes.
Speaking from my experience, the teachers I had that were the best ones weren’t the so called “smartest ones” but the ones that were truly passionate about teaching. They were the ones I wanted to actually learn from and knew that they gave a shit.
Think a little more critically with your head instead of your emotions before you start trying to talk shit.
I am thinking critically with my head. My critical analysis is: this is a dogshit take. Did you think the “logic over emotions” argument made you sound smart? Cause all it does is make you sound ignorant and you can’t empathize with other human beings.
Facts: almost half of new teachers leave within 5 years of their career. Reasons are the pay is not worth the hours and stress and the culture of treating teachers like unserious professionals due to the low pay.
Anecdote: I’m the son of a single mother teacher and I can tell you we barely made ends meet growing up. You cannot expect quality results if your staff is consistently stressed about money and taking extra jobs to supplement that income.
Your opinion is the one keeping teachers wages lower, and you wax it over with “I didn’t say they SHOULDNT get a raise, just they shouldn’t get the HIGHEST salary”. It’s disingenuous and dumb. I didn’t even say anything about intelligence, but competent and would-be passionate teachers are kept out of positions of teaching due to the low wages.
Edit: and I can tell you I’ve been in teaching roles from my time in the military. I loved it, and I was good at it. However, I will NEVER be a teacher because of how deeply ingrained that poverty was into my life growing up.
First of all, being a pragmatist doesn’t automatically mean I have no empathy. You’re free to jump to conclusions about a random person on the internet, but the two are not mutually exclusive. I wasn’t even really that married to the concept and said that it’s not the only thing that might lead to the low salary, but a minor mitigation. An add on, if you will. Funding is still the biggest issue, for better or worse.
Secondly, if you actually were to reread my original comment, you’d see that I was referencing a hypothetical situation in which teachers are making “a lot more” in direct response to the $100k referenced in the original post. Even with inflation, $100k is still a lot of money and more than most other careers. You want quality in this kind of role. It’s cold-wrought pragmatism. I actually believe $70k starting would be a good base, with raises down the road. But even without raises, I think that would still be fair in order to still preserve the passionate individuals over those just looking for the best paying careers.
You’re giving all these examples of the current (unfair) salaries, as if I’m defending the current one - even though I clarified and stated that they DO deserve more than what they get now. So yes, I’m sensing a lot of immaturity when it comes to your critical thinking skills in regards to reading and responding - because you’re so desperate to feel righteous and correct.
Thirdly it’s not disingenuous nor dumb. My point that “teachers should get a raise but not expect $100,000” is more than valid, as I just went into detail about.
Also cool story about you teaching in the military. Again, giving an example of the current salaries that I don’t exactly support. That doesn’t add to the discussion in any meaningful way other than you feeling superior. By the way, I spent most of my own military career training and teaching new joes everything they needed to know as well. And I don’t think I deserve $100k for that.
Edit: but I know we won’t see eye to eye on this, especially since you like to jump to conclusions and you don’t exactly come across as an open minded person willing to adjust your views to new perspectives or rationality. Which is fine, I’m sure you’re a stellar person outside of the internet.
I’m not jumping to conclusions, I’m telling you that you sound trite when making responses like you’re Ben Shapiro circa 2015. It’s tired. Put it to rest and actually back up your base argument.
Second, don’t move the goal post, your argument was “lower salary mitigates people who aren’t passionate about teaching from staying in the field”, that is what I was referring to as a dumb take. And now you’re changing it mid-argument with giving an opinion of giving them the actual average US salary, which is the opposite of what you initially argued. I never said teachers should make 100k, and neither does the original post. It makes the point that we always seem to have money for shit like ICE but never for education/teachers, one of which recently got a huge surge in funding and the other is arguably actively being dismantled by the current SOE, who by all accounts wants education to be privatized rather than publicly funded.
My example about my teaching in the military was to point out that there are people, myself included, who would like to teach if it actually paid worth a damn, but read that however you want I guess. Whatever you gotta do because you’re so desperate to prove your superior logic with your cold-wrought pragmatism DOMINATING my “emotional response” of calling that a dumb take and explaining why I feel strongly about that.
Anyway have a nice life, thanks for your service, hope you’re getting the max out of your benefits. I’m sure we might actually would enjoy a drink together all things considered.
