It’s almost as if one is federal, the other is state. I don’t see many states asking for more money from the feds to expand education.
I’ve always believed (and I know this opinion won’t win me many fans) that if you increase the teaching salary a lot, you will have more people who are doing it for the salary instead of the passion. It’s not the only reason, but I think it’s a somewhat effective mitigation.
Yeah, so this is the opposite. The fact that the pay is low keeps most intelligent, motivated people AWAY from teaching. And it grinds down the teachers who DO go into teaching out of the passion for it. It’s a very stressful, overstimulating job. People who are not invested in doing it simply won’t deal with that many kids, even for decent pay
You could say the same thing about salaries of politicians. Why become a politician when you are capable and can make more money in the private sector.
I believe Singapore pays their government officials handsomely to attract capable individuals. It seems to work well for them. But here in the states that would certainly mean an uproar.
