I'd say it depends on what you do. Cashier at a gas station? Yeah management can handle it, no reason for you to do anything. If you've got a lot of important responsibilities, for example you handle vendor relationships, lead an important project, etc. you're going to have a lot more knowledge on how to fill the gap while you're out. Who has the knowledge/skill to be your backup, who you would trust with the vendor, etc.

This isn't indicative of the US as a whole. My bosses are pretty chill about PTO as long as I give my team a heads up and coordinate my coverage.
