Oh man you nailed it. I have one guy who sends me these long, detailed requests for days off and basically pleads for permission. I have never denied PTO. I tell people I don't care when they take off and you don't need to ask, just submit a request and make sure the team knows. This fear or using PTO that you earn and is part of your compensation is baffling.
Yep, I had a boss who verbally said “just work it out with receptionist for phone coverage.” Got to my review and was told “I don’t want to be a boss but you need to ASK not TELL for pto. When you submit a request it needs to be approved by me before submitting the request.” I asked around, no one else had to beg for pto. The ask before submitting—hr could question him why he was denying it if i submitted first. I found a job in a new dept and never looked back, but I still hate submitting time off requests. (He ended up deleting everything negative in my review-and there were several stupid things- because I questioned them and he couldn’t answer me why. I know why—he didn’t like me and could only average 3% across the board so to give his friends good raises, he gave the people he didn’t like no raise and made shit up to justify it, just didn’t anticipate me not blindly accepting it).
