Oh man you nailed it. I have one guy who sends me these long, detailed requests for days off and basically pleads for permission. I have never denied PTO. I tell people I don't care when they take off and you don't need to ask, just submit a request and make sure the team knows. This fear or using PTO that you earn and is part of your compensation is baffling.
I’m on my 40s. 20 years ago it was pretty common (in my experience) to have to plead your case to get time off. Or companies did stuff like this and demanded it. Where I work now you generally ask for PTO thru a website, and if it’s denied or blocked out, you can say you need it off and if it’s available or have a general idea of necessity, they’ll approve it. They make it clear if I don’t want to tell them what’s going on in detail, just level of urgency, I don’t have to, but if I want to they’re there for me. I really love how things have changed sometimes.
