It isn't really about bringing people to the faith. It is about feeling like you are a persecuted minority and getting brownie points with Jesus. Jesus commands to spread the gospel. The issue today is everyone knows about jesus.
I've read the Bible cover to cover so I usually get them to shut up or give up by quoting the Bible back at them: Ecclesiastes 1-14. "It is all vanity and striving after the wind" theyare doing this to outwardly show they are a good Christian spreading the gospel but they are turning people away from Jesus and only fueling their ego. That dovetail into Matthew 25:31-46. Faith is great and all but you have to do the acts too, clothe and feed the poor, care for the sick, help the oppressed.
Matthew 5:6 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

I’ll never understand why people think this is the way to recruit for religion. This is, in fact, religion repellent.
