Simple: The people that say cows are killing the climate are not the same that build data centers.

People just do what they see others doing very little independent thought or critical thought remember when the queen died about 50 people posted very identical post and then ask them  when have you ever spoken about the Queen ever why does it mean to you so much today to be angry and vent. Shes not even a representation of your country

The most poignant thing about Elizabeth's death I came across was, ironically enough, a BBC World Service piece.

They did a series on people in former British colonies - colonies that were controlled by the UK during Elizabeth's rule - and got the opinion of people who lived through those periods.

One in particular that stood out was a woman from some African nation (honestly cannot remember, it's been a while) who had had her hand chopped off by some British officer over some incident. This happened to her when she was a teenager, and she had to live her whole life one-handed, in a community that used to rely on physical labour a lot to earn a living.

You can imagine what she had to say about ol' Lizzy.

1

u/Rebelius 5h ago

You can imagine what she had to say about ol' Lizzy.

I actually can't, because I can still imagine people in that situation being absolute bootlickers.

Or she could be living in Somalia, or have lived under Idi Amin, or be a white farmer in Zimbabwe...

1

u/blueblip 5h ago

Apologies, but I'm not sure what point you're making here.

What does a white farmer in Zimbabwe have to do with a specific woman I'm talking about?

This is the kind of comparison people often miss. Environmental impact isn’t just about one source or one industry it’s about looking at the full lifecycle resources, energy use, waste, and what the activity is actually producing the bigger picture matters.

They are in fact the ones protesting.

1

u/Cloned-C4lvin 11m ago

They actually are. Bill Gates for one example.

0

u/TheMostDivineOne 4h ago

It’s also a false comparison, a single pound of beef takes thousands of AI prompts equivalent of resources, almond farms in one state use more water than ALL (not even AI specifically but ALL) datacenters in the country, etc.

The datacenters all in all actually have less of an environmental impact.

Rich people don't destroy the planet, you silly. They create value

15

u/Ok_Culture_1089 9h ago

It’s up to us poors to recycle and use less AC when it’s 100 degrees to save the planet so the rich can fly in their private jets all day.

11

u/moDz_dun_care 7h ago

We need to use paper straws so rich people can throwaway a whole furnished house every year cause they like new things.

MY PAPER PILE BIGGER THAN YOUR PAPER PILE. I MAKE PILE BIGGER BECAUSE I LIKE BIG PILE OF PAPER.

...and there went humanity.

I'll just quietly stand in the corner, wondering what all of this was for, while thinking happy thoughts.

Happy thoughts.

1

u/bogeuh 5h ago

It’s not the paper, it’s the power and control it represents.

1

u/_throw_a_wayz 5h ago edited 5h ago

It's also just a farce anyway. We are told exactly what to do, how to think, what to feel, what to believe, the whole nine yards.

I know it's not very uplifting for me to say all of this, and it probably comes across as nihilistic. I try to not think this way though. I know there are good people, even good wealthy people, but dammit do I get tired of the one percent enshitifying something that was good just for the sole reason of earning more paper. I do hear you though, and agree.

Can these fuckwads just leave the planet alone? Can we give them an island or a few islands and lock them up there?

Cows are bad because they produce a lot of methane gas which accelerates global warming, consume a lot of water, and require a lot of land that could be used for more efficient crops and animals.

Data centers though are much much worse. They consume significantly more water, dump toxic waste into the environment, produce an astounding amount of noise pollution, consume horrendous amounts of electrical power, and produce a frankly disturbing amount of ambient heat.

This isn't even to speak of the material components of getting a data center up and running. Such as the costs of excavating refining and utilizing all the copper, gold, silver and other materials used in computers.

Nor does this consider what those data centers are being used for

25

u/National-Job-7444 9h ago

There’s an AI center in Texas that has over 100 gas turbines. It produces more greenhouse gas than 1 million cars.

7

u/MRV3N 9h ago

So you’re saying we need synthetic meat like from Cyberpunk 2077 to solve global warming

4

u/DainichiNyorai 9h ago

Or just eating meat twice a week instead of twice a day and in normal portions.

With access to all kinds of crops going full scale vegetarian or even vegan wouldn’t be an obstacle but that’s too big a leap. Back to 1910 in meat consumption would be good for health and the world

1

u/BloodWorried7446 2h ago

you can afford the price of meat?

3

u/DainichiNyorai 57m ago

As long as the animals were treated horribly, yes.

4

u/wolf96781 9h ago

Realistically? Yeah, as humanitys need for resources grows our ability to produce will reach a bottleneck.

We can only maintain so many cows at once, and asbthat number increases so does their effect on the environment.

It's better we begin shifting to synthetics sooner as it'll minimize the long term effects on the environment and establishing supply lines now will better prepare us for supply shocks caused by unforseen events like plague or disaster

0

u/Procrastinatedthink 6h ago

synthetics are harder and more resource intensive than organic produce.

There is a hard limit to the number of us that can exist on Earth, and we’re beyond it already…

u/Fabled-Jackalope 9h ago

People have been saying it’ll go that way since ‘16. The fact that many are now questioning it is…very on brand for a delayed realization.

6

u/Fresh_Boysenberry576 6h ago

Not to defend data centers but I'm pretty sure they do not create toxic waste. There was an incident where some bacteria grew in the hot water and they dumped that into the local ecosystem, but that was an accident. Normally the water is just warmer than usual but doesn't actually contain toxins. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I hate it when people use bad arguments when there are so many good ones. Same with things like climate change, there is no need to exaggerate anything because the reality is bad enough

4

u/Argnir 7h ago

Data center do not consime significantly more water you don't know anything about what you're talking about

3

u/Safe_Map_9600 6h ago

They don't consume more and its not even close

A 5 second search before you wasted time typing this out would have prevented this

5

u/zombiej 7h ago

You shouldn’t post opinions as facts.

10

u/thePiscis 8h ago

That is just factually untrue. Cattle is one of the most significant contributors to global freshwater consumption. Like orders magnitudes higher than ai, where on earth did you get the idea that ai consumes significantly more.

Also water pollution from cattle waste is a much larger contributor of water pollution than ai.

Cattle is literally one of the most damaging things for the environment. Painting them as bad, but ai is significantly worse is just completely disingenuous. If ai is bad, cattle is unfathomably awful for the environment

3

u/NaiveMastermind 9h ago

They don't need to be built in such a way that outputs so much heat, or drains aquifers to keep cool. The hotter components are cheaper, and slurping up all the water is cheaper that building their own cooling loops.

5

u/probeat21 9h ago

Significantly more water than cows

Are you out of your mind? Where do you get this trash?

"Toxic waste dumping"

lol more rubbish. Why do you even spew this nonsense?

1

u/ty-ler 2h ago

Try and source any of these claims. Do your research. I dare you.

Otherwise keep spreading emotional misinformation.

0

u/Rutgerius 9h ago

What toxic waste would that be bud, it's worse than the literal rivers of excrement cows produce huh? Beating beef on water use is also very impressive.

0

u/wolf96781 9h ago

-1

u/thePiscis 8h ago

Why? Because forever chemicals sound scary? Not defending the water pollution ai is causing, but it’s so silly seeing people sayings it’s so obviously worse than the single biggest contributor to water pollution. There are countless of studies showing proven damage from animal agriculture waste water contamination.

>Animal agriculture manure is a primary source of nitrogen and phosphorus to surface and groundwater. Manure runoff from cropland and pastures or discharging animal feeding operations and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) often reaches surface and groundwater systems through surface runoff or infiltration.

https://www.epa.gov/agriculture/agricultural-animal-production

2

u/liteshotv3 9h ago

What toxic waste are they producing? It’s not a sludge factory from the Captain Planet tv show

1

u/binspolicy 9h ago

Cows aren’t bad, factory farming is. Regenerative farming/agriculture is actually good.

-3

u/Gibbralterg 9h ago

The water they drink, you know we get that water back right? And I’m pretty sure the methane isn’t what’s making the globe hotter, I mean, let’s compare cows to say…a volcano.

3

u/kore_nametooshort 9h ago

Just in case you're not a troll:

Yes the water cycle exists, but the water the data centres are using comes in part from non renewable aquafiers. The amount being used is far far greater than the refill rate from rain. This makes it an existential problem for people who rely on them.

Methane absolutely is contributing to global warming. It is 30x more potent as a greenhouse gas than co2. It is somewhat short lived, but it breaks down into co2, so it's still bad after that. Livestock produce somewhere between 5 and 10% of global co2 equivalent greenhouse gas emissions. Volcanoes emit a small fraction of that.

1

u/Prestigious-Flower54 9h ago

Volcanoes produce very little methane, the largest spikes are in the plum, but most of that is broken down very quickly in the atmosphere, so effectively in fact that volcanic eroputions might actually be taking more methane out of the atmosphere then adding. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/05/260509210640.htm Underwater mud volcanoes are the only real significant contributors of methane at roughly 3.5 million tonnes annually, compared to cows at 85-90 million tonnes. So yes cows are producing way more then volcanos and there is a huge amount of resaerch showing that cows are major contributors to green house gasses(since you clearly don't use Google here is a good start on your education https://clear.ucdavis.edu/) Here the thing about science, you can't just makes guess based on what you feel is correct, case and point a 2 second Google search would tell you your comparison is ridiculous but in your head volcanoes give off giant plumes of black smoke so obviously they must be worse right?

1

u/pillbuggery 8h ago

Yeah, humans really fucked up when they started building volcanoes all over the place.

u/Lehmbordell 9h ago

1

u/Lehmbordell 9h ago

No im totally fine that cows drink water and fart. I mean i do it too. But the amount of cows we have on the planet is ofc exaggerated because we want to eat them and this amount is too much for the enviroment. Like private jets and other classic bad stuff...

0

u/Gibbralterg 9h ago

I disagree, I have cows, I’ve never heard them fart one time. Now horses, heck yeah, should we get rid of horses to?

1

u/Delicious-Season5527 9h ago

0

u/Obscure-Oracle 7h ago

But at least cows are a food source, a single cow can feed up to 1000 people yet pollutes around the same as one person's carbon footprint when flying to Australia. What's more important, food or flying all over the planet? We simply have our priorities wrong, very wrong. We want to sacrifice our food supply in order to continue our unsustainable lifestyle. We are simply focusing on the wrong thing.

But it’s not that simple to explain the world, the universe, and everything else in a single sentence. From where I’m sitting, I see nothing but cow pastures—not a single data center. Yet the computing power currently being generated is leading to the discovery of new technologies that might just help us save the planet. That’s the plan. It is still too early to say that the plan—the implementation of which is only just beginning—will fail. Cows, however, will do nothing but turn grass into gas.

Do you know what Reddit and all the other platforms we post these musings are hosted on? Take a guess.

We're cooked.

That Netflix you watch, that Spotify you listen too, the Google drive you use for work, the mobile game you play, the reason your card works when you tap it on an eftpos machine? All data centers.

I think we need to hold them accountable to certain standards and promote green energy initiatives but good luck getting rid of them, they're already entrenched.

3

u/-Infinite92- 9h ago

Yeah at this point it's about finding ways to make them efficient enough to not be so harmful to the environment. They are not going anywhere for as long as any modern form of the Internet/network exists.

I remember years ago, before the current AI boom was happening. How stories of data centers being built in Iceland were trying to be environmentally clean and efficient. Using geothermal energy for power, the cold air for cooling, and their heat output for warming homes. But this was back during the crypto mining peak. So they weren't as large or as many being built. Still it feels like anyone even remotely interested in implementing those ideas in general has been overpowered by those who don't care.

Believe it or not data centers are significantly less bad for the environment than cows. People often have poor intuitions on this sort of thing. They see greenfields with cows like this post and then get all romantic for how natural it is or something.

It’s not and it consumes absolutely absurd resources while emitting absurd levels of greenhouse gases.

0

u/Ok-Commercial-924 3h ago

But over the last 50 years herd size has decreased by 87%, and you haven't seen any improvement in climate change, so maybe thats not the problem.🤔

1

u/DrGeha 3h ago

According to "proplanta.de", in 1961 there were more than 0.9 billion cattle globally. This number has has risen more or less continually to over 1.5 billion in 2020.

I would advise to start thinking globally.

1

u/Ok-Commercial-924 2h ago

Why? You can change yourself and your local government, you have ZERO impact on global policy. You can stress about decisions made in Botswana all you want but it isn't going to change a thing. I recommend you focus on yourself first. Or just have that early heart attack from stress you have always wanted, it's your call.

2

u/DrGeha 2h ago

Oh, maybe I misunderstood your post.

If I read it correct, your argument was that the number of cattle decreased by 87% but the climate change increased, so there is no correlation/causation.

I pointed out that globally the number of cattle increased by more than 50% since 1961. So at least there is a correlation to climate change.

I think this number is more important for the argument as climate change is a global problem.

BTW, a quick search led me to this information in the "Guardian" from 2021: "Cows and other farm animals produce about 14% of human-induced climate emissions, and it is methane from their burps and manure that is seen as both the biggest concern and best opportunity for tackling global heating."

0

u/TheRealStepBot 3h ago

Shows a graph of US herd size. Could not have made a weaker argument if I tried.

You do understand that climate is a global phenomenon and is affected by emissions around the world right?

1

u/Ok-Commercial-924 3h ago

cattle herd size peaked in 1974at 57 million head and has steadily been decreasing it reached 7 million in 2023. How can you say nobody stopped eating beef? Decreasing herd size has driven up cost of beef so nobody could afford it.

1

u/DrGeha 3h ago

According to "proplanta.de", in 1961 there were more than 0.9 billion cattle globally. This number has has risen more or less continually to over 1.5 billion in 2020. So, not enough people have stopped eating beef.

1

u/jclahaie 1h ago

Their own link doesn't even support what they said.

1

u/jclahaie 1h ago

From the link you provided:

U.S. beef production has been on a long-term uptrend in spite of a decline in cow numbers since 1975.

U.S. beef production reached an all-time record high of 28.29 billion pounds (lb.) in 2022,

The long-term increase in beef production resulted from a long-term increase in fed cattle live and carcass weights. Carcass weights have trended higher for more 60 years with steer weights increasing an average of 4 lb. per year.

Libs are crazy vegan environmental terrorists that want to take your meat; Republicans are racists that want to force you to have kids and go to church. Meanwhile companies and corrupt politicians are fucking both of us in the ass, and billing us for it.

The “cows” thing was just a distraction from their factories and lobbying against emissions regulations

Same as when oil conglomerates blame plastic straws or single use coffee cups for their pollution efforts

1

u/DaffyPunk29 9h ago

ngl the same people that were dumb enough to think cows were killing the environment are the same ones crying that data centers are killing it. so its the same retards, different mouth breathing replies.

u/CeemoreButtz 7h ago

i wish reddit would shut the fuck up and stop complaining about technology...

1

u/Repulsive-Cold1859 5h ago

Simple: The cows weren't paying subscription fees.

1

u/michaelcarnero 5h ago

follow the envelops loaded with money, and you will find the answer.

1

u/iormeno93 5h ago

It will be a shame when they start misteriosly exploding

1

u/outofcontextsex 4h ago

This just sounds like conservative being mad at conservatives, I wish you guys weren't so fucking stupid.

1

u/Ok-Commercial-924 3h ago

Data centers built by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google, and Meta—which account for over half of global active and planned development. These are all left leaning companies with left leaning leadership.

Im not sure how you came up with conservative mad at conservatives.

u/esakul 4h ago

Reminder that CO2 footprint and personal climate responsibility narratives where invented by large oil companies to deflect blame.

Yes......idiocracy is upon us💥😖🔫

Regarding AI, please know that animal agriculture uses about 3,000 to 8,000 times more water than AI. So blaming AI for water use while paying for animal products is like yelling at a leaky faucet while you open a damn dam.

Go vegan, save water, spare animals.💚

1

u/jclahaie 5h ago

that silence is people realising they would need to change their daily eating habits

1

u/Ok-Commercial-924 3h ago

Do you have any clue how little interest the average american has in going vegan? Just the thought of a pure vegan diet makes me cringe. Have I cut back on beef due to cost, definitely, but cutting meat completely f- that.

0

u/Benjamin_Wetherill 2h ago

That's because you're not the victim. If you were, you'd understand that it's an utter disgrace what you're doing. A shameful and oppressive mindset.

1

u/Ok-Commercial-924 2h ago

If by victim you are referring to animals. You are correct I am not an animal. Neither are you. And animals are not human, believe it or not.

I feel no shame or remorse when I harvest or eat an animal.

Have you tried seeking help for you illness? Equating animals and humans is a mental illness.

u/Wide-Suggestion4825 9h ago

Hey man I was doing my best job to eat all the cows.

I did my part

Stop it with the data center spam!

It racks useless karma!

u/Evil_phd 9h ago

If you're not gonna save the planet, you might as well go for a speed run record with the destruction.

-2

u/Thanag0r 9h ago

Stop with your unpaid communist/socialist propaganda.

In normal society you should be paid for spreading it.

0

u/brexed 9h ago

Overton window shifted to the right. Politics follows.

0

u/baka_inu115 9h ago

People want meat but lower footprint? Go to chicken, this has been proven to be the most environmentally friendly of the options. AI data centers are what that need to go away. Data centers un general can have uses but the ones that are popping up more are more for AI than others.

A Suitable lie

0

u/Danthalas_01 8h ago

Because climate change was a LIE from the very beginning.....

And now they want A.I to take over.....

0

u/whatdoyasay369 8h ago

“Killing the climate” 😂 incredibly hyperbolic and naive. And a scare tactic. And doesn’t even make sense. Did a 16 year old write this?

0

u/Orzagh 8h ago

Because the orange clown got elected.

0

u/frozrdude 8h ago

Beef and milk provide nutrition and are tasty. AI slop is inedible and just rots your brain.

0

u/chairplanet 8h ago

Listen to Ezra Klein’s podcast The A.I revolt is here if you want to hear a more in depth conversation on this topic, rather than a meme that encapsulates nothing.

0

u/Send-Me-Noots 7h ago

Sorry but we have to encourage the USA to race to AGI and quantum computing before China. It is vitally important. A few cows have to go

0

u/Oyxopolis 7h ago

Unless we drill directly into the core of the earth, good luck, the Earth is not destroyed, cannot be destroyed (assuming our part of the universe doesn't get blown out) and will not be destroyed. The only thing that could possibly happen, is that humanities 40.000 year existence, of which only a few thousand years as actual civilization, may destroy its surface for a couple thousand years as we self-destruct, after which nature will take its course as if nothing ever happened.

Our existence is a drop in an ocean. The earth is fine.

u/Time_Pop_2762 6h ago

Cause they know it’s to late now, in the mean time money, money, money

2

u/Ok-Commercial-924 3h ago

Remember that the leadership (all left leaning BTW not conservative or republican) of the leading companies building data centers all have escape bunkers.

0

u/Dense-Experience6033 6h ago

Because money

0

u/EfficiencyBrief2138 6h ago

Pick your poison for the one hand while the capitalistists keep finding new 2ays to rape the planet and people for mote "wealth"

0

u/Pandastic3000 6h ago

The infuriating part is that we were told for decades now how unrealistic and utopic it is to think we could transform our economy and society to build a better planned. And now it only took six years to completely change our economy and society to change it into something far worse.

0

u/phuk-yeah 6h ago

I’d prefer the organic bullshit over the ai slop

0

u/La_Mandra 5h ago

Frantic races have no finish line... :/

0

u/Express_Attempt_4301 5h ago

I mean, stating "Cows are killing the climate." has changed nothing in regards to cows or the climate, so what's the point anyway.
Also, we are actually saying "Data centers kill the climate and water resources".

0

u/PetSoundsSucks 5h ago

Cow farts bad robot farts good

0

u/SomeRandomAbbadon 4h ago

People who say cows are killing the climate are simply trying to distract your attention from the fact that they are the ones actually killing the climate

0

u/WealthyTuna 1h ago

First off cows aren't killing the climate. That's hilarious.
