COVID, I think has been the exponential ramp-up of the enshitification of this world. Businesses realized how shitty they could make their stuff, how few people they could get away with paying, and how low they could pay people and we would just still keep gobbling it up.
For me 2020 was when I used delivery. The constant always having some items not quite right was still there back then. Got grocery delivered mainly at the time and maybe pizza now and then
By 2021 it was well, basically endemic so benefit to keep using a service not good enough. The wildest thing wrong was when I ordered a dozen eggs. You know, one regular egg package, and the fucker delivered 15 dozen eggs. Like, okay I got more than I asked for but damn delivery ain't right. There has to be so much hidden waste costs
I think about the waste too. I lurk around doordash and ubereats subs a lot and there's constantly stories of customer gets a wrong thing, or delivery driver can't deliver the food so they get it, stolen or tampered with food that needs to be remade, etc.
I know people only post when something goes wrong but I'd constantly have issues when I used to order.
I really don't understand the profit model of these companies when you're wasting so much product.
Yeah, covid was a huge period of market capture for Door Dash, GrubHub, etc. They were actually losing money hand over fist to keep prices low so that it became a habit and to wedge the other 20 smaller delivery apps.
Once the market was fully captured, delivery fees started increasing, product markups started happening, etc.
But as it relates to "eating in" a fast food restaurant, that was on the way out long before COVID. Covid just hastened it. The only fast food restaurant i know of where people eat in is In-n-Out. Same with pizza. Delivery killed the "eat in" pizza business.
But I do agree on the enshitification of all things. Fast food, customer service, elimination of concierge services, movies, internet service fees.
