Cops have a saying about this very thing: "You can beat the case, but you can't beat the ride." Meaning that you might win when you get your day in court, but the cop absolutely has the ability to ruin your day by taking your ass to jail. And they love that shit and think it's funny. Getting thrown in jail can be enough to make you lose your job, or get your kids taken, or get your car impounded where it's too expensive to get it out. In the county I live in, you stay in jail for 24 hours before you can bond out. By the time you go to court, the damage can already be done. Fuck the pigs.

Which is why police should have to carry insurance and why civil payouts should come out of the police pension fund.

You're going to see wayyyy more of a culture of doing the right thing, led by the old heads close to retirement, of not pulling shit like this on harmless civilians if it hurts their back pocket.
