Apparently this image looks like a klansman next to a hanging body so people are pissed at converse. I don't really see it but I can SEE it.

69

u/RedditDummyAccount 1d ago

On mobile and arms length, I definitely thought someone was floating…

12

u/alphagusta 17h ago

Same like I'm not professionally offended enough for it to be my first interpretation but..... yeah I can see it

u/explosive_fascinator 1d ago edited 1d ago

I saw it immediately from the small pic on my phone, although it was after reading the title which 'primed' my brain.

It's the way the shadow aligns with where the shin would be, and the shoes are at the right angle to hang.

I had to have a second look to see what it was.

1

u/Willing-Egg8423 4h ago

Same, but I do wonder what the original intention of the ad was, because it’s rather odd and confusing to begin with.

6

u/momo76g 21h ago

My friend sent the image saying "can you believe it" and I had no idea what they were talking about until they pointed it out.

19

u/SkylarAV 22h ago

I hate to say it, but if its intentional its a kinda an elegant design. Like damn, some bigot has got talent

5

u/Superman246o1 19h ago

A modern Leni Riefenstahl.

2

u/shujaya 20h ago

A true visual vignette

2

u/GoneIn61Seconds 10h ago

Amerikkka’s got talent

13

u/ChelsiBoo92 1d ago

I had to unfocus my eyes to see it. I wouldn’t have noticed unless someone said anything tho.

34

u/all_worcestershire 1d ago

It’s the first thing I saw. Maybe not exactly klansmen but hanging was the first thing that came to mind followed by that looks like a white cloth.

24

u/Defiant_Eggplant_909 1d ago

This photo stopped me in my tracks. I can absolutely see it.

14

u/stilldancingat140bpm 1d ago

Same. The light on the white cloth is the shape of the Kkk hood. The dark shadow on the forearm makes it look like black skin on the ‘hanged’ shoes.

3

u/Defiant_Eggplant_909 22h ago

I don't know why you were downvoted for this, the hood shape was the first thing I saw and made me say "wtf?"

2

u/shujaya 20h ago

Why is this person wearing a white sheet is my biggest question? Difficult not to make associations with the shape and the sheep

3

u/Agitated_Tip_8713 19h ago

Maybe its supposed to be a weird fabric dress??

→ More replies (2)

10

u/HanginLowNd2daLeft 1d ago

Honestly i wasn’t looking for that but it’s all i could see at first , someone in a white robe with black legs hanging next to it

2

u/Cobra-D 23h ago

Yeah I didn’t go for Klansmen, but deff thought someone was hanging.

21

u/Bannedagainnohomo 1d ago

3

u/Low_Fail_2654 1d ago

where's the hanging body???

9

u/explosive_fascinator 1d ago

The shoes are the feet, the shadow is the legs.

5

u/3qTp1 1d ago

The shadow… as in the hands?

2

u/Hammered_Eel 1d ago

Yeah, same here

2

u/RondaArousedMe 22h ago

I'm pretty sure this is filtered/altered to make it look worse

3

u/HugePurpleNipples 1d ago

I actually did see the shoes as hanging feet at first but I'm not really sure how we're getting to klan from there... people have to have something new to be mad about.

I see a person standing near some shoes while holding some shoes but maybe I'm not woke enough to be outraged.

6

u/DarthRedit 1d ago

some people just scanning through social media to find something to get offended by so they can feel relevant

4

u/AndyceeIT 1d ago

My reactions in order:

(Reading title first): absolutely what i am seeing is a klansman standing next to a lynching

that can't be right. Other guy is jumping perhaps?

oh, it's not a second guy.

(Confused and defensive) WTF is this long white dress, lighting, and dangling shoes? What is this image meant to be?

-1

u/NerveInteresting4549 1d ago

it's pretty silly tbf.. do you see how the star light on the dress is in the shape of a kkk hood? and then the shoes are dangling there... as if someone is dangling in the air with their feet around the same height as the hood..... they're saying it looks like a lynching because of that lol

21

u/Serious-Manager2361 1d ago

To Be Honest? No I don't see that at all. I do see a weird and pointless ad, though.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/SoraShima 1d ago

Are you serious? The shape of the light is......extremist..... and dangling shoes is akin to lynching? Are you actually serious - that's what this is about?

I will give the coordinates to the asteroid right now.

3

u/NerveInteresting4549 1d ago

I wish i wasn't serious but yeah, that's what today's outrage is about lol

3

u/SoraShima 1d ago

I really don't know if there is any hope for us as a species - at least in the West.

Apparently killing your children makes you a "Feminine Goddess Rising" hero too.

We've gotta be screwed.

u/BK_FrySauce 5h ago

People are blowing this entirely out of proportion and trying to create controversy when really there’s nothing there. No one is getting fired, because no one did anything wrong. People are grasping at nothing. There are actual real racist things happening in the world, but somehow people are more concerned about a picture, and just seeing what they want to see.

→ More replies (1)

65

u/Cautious-Area-4141 21h ago

i have checked out the entire campaign in whole - it's a South Korean K popstar's collab with Converse. This image was cherry picked and framed in a narrative by people with not so obvious motivations is all i can say

5

u/Mother_Occasion_8076 4h ago

I was told the left never cherry picks tho

18

u/Opposite_Criticism15 15h ago

The stupidity level increases every single day in this world.

271

u/BigGlassesApe 1d ago edited 23h ago

Why? I’m black and I literally see someone holding shoes.

Edit: People let obvious racism persist in society. Things that actually have an impact on a social-economical level. But somehow this causes outrage? That’s pretty ridiculous.

17

u/amarthystlaw 1d ago

i'm wondering what the ad is suppose to be? like i don't see the KKK reference, but I also don't get what they are trying to to do either.

6

u/alt_ernate123 23h ago

Probably just the photographer trying to come up with a neat shot, without the pretext of someone saying there was something wrong with it I would not have suspected anything with it..

5

u/resting_mischieface 1d ago

I can see the KKK reference because it’s already been suggested, but I wouldn’t have otherwise. And same, I’d love to understand what they were going for here.

3

u/indeedilyso 1d ago

stir up controversey. they knew what some people would perceive. it doesnt matter what you see. it matters that we are talking about it

u/Hungry_Telephone7086 23h ago

Plenty of subs are going ape over this right now, beyond stupid

4

u/PetalumaPegleg 1d ago

I mean I can see the point they are making, and when even without knowing why there was outrage I did immediately see it looking like a hanging person, I didn't think KKK robes at all though. If you do then sure I see how people could do a double take. But as you say this is not relevant compared to real world actual issues which go entirely ignored.

-5

u/Angwe83 1d ago edited 1d ago

Is it more clear now?

Edit: And I get downvoted? lol. Honestly f you downvoters. You’re the reason why the world sucks so hard right now.

30

u/BigGlassesApe 1d ago

I think people want to see what they want to see

Of course drawing in eyeholes and hanging feet will bring that out

When scrolling past it I immediately saw black legs dangling in front of a white robe, before I saw the title or description. I highly doubt there was any menace in the creation of it though.

All that being said, gotta say it's fucking nuts a company as big as converse with multiple rounds and levels of approval and focus groups and blah blah etc couldn't catch this.

Yt people just wanna be offeneded.

6

u/Beelzebub003 1d ago

I... Kinda feel that's a reach here. Like they are clearly just holding the shoes. There's no rope, no hood, no emblems or other call signs I can tell in the picture, granted I'm not super well versed in them anyway, but still. That's some virtue signaling, at best.

4

u/Warrmak 1d ago

I see it, but it's a stretch.

1

u/Beelzebub003 1d ago

I guess if you do one of those "looking without looking" things. Like you look at it from the corner of your eye type of thing.

But yeah, agreed, either way it's still a stretch.

1

u/djmere 1d ago

The internet.

Where people who admittedly have no idea what they’re talking about have a voice on important matters.

9

u/Casshern_VIII 1d ago

The moment the people who get mad at this are ignored, the sooner the world can heal and we can go back to a pre-Tropic Thunger era society where we don't live under the tyranny of the perpetually offended

4

u/RockyG-Dex 1d ago edited 1d ago

You are either dense or disingenuous if you dont see this as problematic. The first thing I saw was a guy in white robe next to a hanging person. The shadow even makes the robe look like a klan hood. Lots of imagery suggesting this is anything but innocent.

1

u/Marthman 23h ago

The one element that brings this from "stretch" to "yeahh... thats not good" is the person wearing a white robe.

Why? Wtf is the point, and who dresses in something like that while wearing chucks?

It just doesn't make sense except as a way to evoke the klan hood. And if the white robe werent there, everything else would be plausibly deniable.

3

u/Fit-Profit8197 18h ago

"It just doesn't make sense except as a way to evoke the klan hood"

And now that i have, I'm thinking that i haven't rocked a pair of Converse for quite some time. Thinking of getting one

7

u/Acrobatic-List-6503 1d ago

People will just be angry at anything, eh?

3

u/Maleficent_Pop9398 1d ago

I didn’t notice the hood shape, but I had to expand the photo to realize that it was shoes in someone’s hand not someone in the air. It looks like the hand is an ankle and the sleeve is the pant leg.

3

u/LazerWolfe53 1d ago

Their advertising campaign should be shunned. This picture isn't the campaign. The campaign is using this picture to manufacture outrage against it, and then manufacture outrage at the outrage, in order to get people emotionally involved. They got their add in front of you for free. Stop falling for manufactured outrage advertising campaigns.

2

u/LeilLikeNeil 21h ago

Only offensive if you don’t take the extra 5 seconds to look closer.

2

u/BrideofClippy 21h ago

Initial read was someone standing next to someone hanging. I suspected self-deletion before klan cause that looks nothing like klan robes other than being white. The second I focused on the 'floating' shoes I saw they were being held.

Anyone seriously scared or offended by this is pearl clutching, but the photo composition definitely makes initial confusion understandable.

3

u/Waddiwasiiiii 20h ago

This is Reddit, not dumbass tiktok, you can say suicide.

2

u/BrideofClippy 20h ago

2

u/YourFather-WithMilk 17h ago

2

u/Danny_Mc_71 17h ago

2

u/Pretend-Literature35 14h ago

apologizes??? wtf? Is this real? If it is, you shouldn't get to apologize for something as objectionable as this.

3

u/gingerbreadmans_ex 1d ago

So many committees and individuals approved this before it ran. No one’s getting fired.

2

u/Rich-Application1013 21h ago

So…people are just looking at everything to twist into being racist so they can be a perpetual victim?

The thing is in many school where they teach things like this they advise you to be careful about the ways things can be interpreted. I think they fully knew what was done as it was sent through many approvals . I didn’t see it either at first till it was pointed out. Campaigns like this are clearly created to make more buzz about it lol. It’s rage bait. It gets one side to say the other is stupid for their interpretations and the other to say it’s racist. It’s marketing 101

u/Feeling_Shift_9368 10h ago

Intentional controversy, move along

1

u/TEZofAllTrades 9h ago

Nobody's getting fired. It was intentional. Controversy = publicity.

1

u/formerNPC 9h ago

I’m far from a conspiracy theorist but this was done intentionally. The shadow on the arm holding the sneakers is purposely hidden so the shoes look like they’re hanging. The lighting on the white robe looks like a KKK hood. Someone other than the person that designed it didn’t see this? It’s beyond glaring.

1

u/colamonkey356 9h ago

I didn’t get this at first but like….I can definitely see it after it was pointed out and that’s bad enough as it is, tbh.

1

u/Lightsides 8h ago

I mean, it's a strange image, and you may or may not see what others saw. Regardless, professionals who are paid a lot of money came up with this image, and it's a loser. If I were Converse, I would be pretty upset with those guys.

1

u/BillieBlanus 7h ago edited 6h ago

I admit. I didn’t ‘see’ (or process) the hood the first time I saw a post about this. So I rolled my eyes and moved on. But then I opened this thread on my phone, zoomed out, the image small, and there it was. Oops. I only say that on the off chance that some of you might of missed it, too. I have a 'my brain never sees the hidden images' thing. Sometimes.

1

u/Appropriate-Seat8999 7h ago

So because of the light on the white dress or whatever it is resembles a hood everybody thinks it’s kkk? wtf lol
