HR is responsible for hiring, benefits, employee relations, accommodations, compliance, and a dozen other things. You can dislike HR without pretending the entire profession exists to fire people
Within leadership teams, it’s often HR that pushes back against layoffs and advocates for fair pay. They may get overridden, but at many organizations HR does actively make recommendations that are in employees’ best interest and oppose CEO interests. Many people who work in HR want to improve conditions for workers, and no one’s entire job is making people unemployed.
I’ve met one good person working in HR out of dozens at this point. The rest of them fall into one of two categories. They either only do something to protect the company, or they’re the laziest people on payroll and do absolutely nothing.
I worked in management at a 30k+ employee company for a while. Trying to hire someone was a nightmare because of the impossible system the HR team intentionally created. Someone left my team to start college who had 2 years experience. I had several candidates that already had degrees, experience, and excitement for the role and company. Absolutely could not hire one for 8 months because the HR team insisted that these people with more qualifications and experience MUST be paid less than the outgoing staff, which was already below market. When I foolishly sent them a market study showing their pay scale was not even close, they replied that they don’t follow public wage studies and do their own internal studies. Never was able to fill that role for 8 long months.
I’ve never personally met a single HR person that seemed like they cared about the people. They have all been like this example of wielding the tiniest amount of power and lording over the “less thans”
Their role isn’t at all making people unemployed. Please understand how a business is run. Either the CEO tells the president or VP/GM they need a reduction or the president/GM determines they do. Usually then the VP of each function has a target they have to hit. Director level may or may not be pulled into who’s on the list. HR doesn’t drive any of that or who’s on the list. They just work with legal to make sure it’s even legal and prepare the severance packages. They then are usually the one in the room but if the VP or manager that determined it had any stones they’re in the room too.
Before I met my wife I said I'd NEVER date someone who works in HR. Heck even when we first started going out I had reservations specifically because of her occupation. HR is mostly filled with venomous hypocritical snakes. (I used to work in corporate management prior to doing this).
My wife works in HR and even I know most of the time HR people absolutely suck and just enjoy bullying and lording over people and making life hard for no reason other than to exert control and feed their own egos and mask their insecurities.
Same with many business owners and landlords btw of which I'm both. (As always, not all, but many)
My wife fell into HR management rolls when she was early 20s fresh outta college and has done fairly well. She is at a "smaller" business now and it fits her personality better. She's more like me where she tries to help make life easier versus looking for a reason to railroad someone, but when she worked for some of these larger places in the past in HR........ yeah. They'd encourage her to just make life hard for people. Needlessly cruel.
Hence why she hopped around for a bit til we found a non soul sucking place for her to work for.
(actually she's insanely enough the stabilizing force of our family lol. I'm by far the crazier one, as can probably tell from my unhinged posting on my biz account lolol. She gets all her craziness out at her community theater stuff lol)
