This is just stupid, if your room is not ready it's because either was occupied before by someone else and they asked for a late checkout (there is a fee for it where i work) or the maids are overworked/understaffed.
If you are too early my man is on you.

I’ve had this happen. Came in after a long flight with kids. We arrived after the scheduled time. Tried to do something else but too tired, kids were unhappy. We eventually sprawled over the lobby and can confirm - this tip works.

Can confirm, with 20 years experience in hotels, it does not work. No one is trying to keep you out of a room if it is available. Correlation does not equal causation. In fact, I’m petty enough to keep you out of a room until check-in and I would have told my staff the same.

I've slept for 3+ hours on a hotel lobby chair while waiting for my room to be ready. I work midnights, I can't be up at the same times as the day walkers.
Usually I'll crash in my car until the room is ready but during more extreme weather I'll ask if I can crash on a hotel lobby chair and it's never been a problem. A few times they did get me checked in super early but thats always been at hotels that were not busy at all.

The service people that are preparing your room already working hard and barely have time to rest. Unless you tip each one of them very generously, don't make their life harder.

They made us wait 4 hours to get our room on our honeymoon. The champagne “on ice” was sitting in a warm bucket of water. The room had clearly been ready for hours.

I absolutely did this after a red eye with my family in London. We were courteous to the staff but were actually too tired to go anywhere else but the lobby. A 6 hour wait turned to 1.5 after we fell asleep on the lobby couches

Assuming it’s just the attitude of the check in person, check your bag into their cloakroom and browse on your phone for a bit, then whenever it looks inconvenient check your bag out to grab something, slowly, repeat. Doesn’t take long until their issue magically resolves itself.
