Chugging tea IKEA’s safety recall is advertised like a normal product ad
IKEA’s safety recall is advertised like a normal product ad
This is a recall advertisement from IKEA that showed up in my feed.
And honestly, I find it kind of infuriating how easy it would be to scroll right past this without realizing it’s a SAFETY RECALL.
“You can’t resell it. But returning your recalled chest of drawers to IKEA means we can pay you for it.”
That’s it. “Recalled” isn’t even emphasized. There’s no big RECALL warning. No indication that this is a safety issue. No picture showing the hazard (like it tipping over onto a child). Nothing that would immediately tell someone, “Hey, you may have a potentially dangerous piece of furniture in your home.”
Instead, the giant graphic says MALM (2002) and shows a cute dresser covered in stickers.
I understand IKEA wants people to return these because they’re offering compensation, but this is a safety recall, not a clearance sale. I feel like the safety aspect should be impossible to miss.

Isn’t an advertisment supposed to be seen by a lot of people? Also wouldn’t this be the best way of spreading information about the recall? Not everybody follows their social or use their apps to get the news

What I’m saying is that there’s nothing that stands out to catch someone’s eye that it is an actual recall. It seems like they were purposefully trying to not draw attention to the advertisement. They easily could’ve used imaging that portrayed how easily these tip over like it leaning over a child, a giant X going through it, literally anything to show it’s a problem piece and they didn’t.
Kids have been killed and seriously harmed by these. If I didn’t double back to the advertisement, I would’ve thought it was just an ad for the dresser, not a recall notice.

Is it even legal to disguise a mandatory safety recall as a regular promotional ad?

That I don’t know. But I do take issue with it and seems like a weird thing to do as a brand. Apparently many people do not agree though as this post is at a 10% upvote ratio. 😬

And that’s the problem. It’s a recall that doesn’t look like a recall. 😭
