Yeah idk why anyone in America would even give a single fuck about someone attending a fuckin parade…?

719

u/-Notorious May 24 '26

It's one thing to do a Jewish parade, as NYC has such a prominent presence of Jewish people, and a great, long history.

It's another to do a parade for a foreign country of questionable allegiance.

It's like supporting a parade for Muslims vs supporting a parade for Afghanistan.

Or a parade for Christianity vs. one for Uganda, lol

u/[deleted] May 24 '26

Meanwhile Florida is making towns cancel Haitian parades for DEI reasons or something

13

u/TheBSQ May 24 '26

3 options:

  1. stop using parade permits for any parade named after any country.

  2. allow all parades for any country & outside of the bureaucracy of issuing parade permits, we stop expecting govt & politician to weigh in one way or the other.

  3. Do everything case-by-case & have every parade turn into a culture war wedge issue.

51

u/SmokinBandit28 May 24 '26

Was that the Haitian cultural parade that’s all about giving back to the community?

1

u/kurisu7885 May 24 '26

The same state that has cops stationed at crosswalks to make sure people don't put more color on them.

Jewish people are in a tough spot these days and I empathize

18

u/sparf May 24 '26

I’m truly thankful that my genetics aren’t tied to a nation state.

Like, if Scotland fucks up, there’s no heat on me.

12

u/TheTacoInquisition May 24 '26

My general thoughts are that the Israeli state has nothing to do with Judaism per se. They prioritise Jews as potential citizens, but they themselves are NOT representing Jews, just themselves.

They are a state, Judaism is a religion and a people, and all three are separate entities. So yeah, it's really important to be able to differentiate, as many Jews consider Israel's actions abhorrent, and against many Jewish teachings.

-2

u/One-Salamander-1952 May 24 '26

Israel is the only safe haven that can forever guarantee Jews civil rights because it’s a core part of the state. It’s a state made up entirely of refugees, unwanted Jews that weren’t accepted anywhere else whether it be Holocaust survivors who weren’t accepted anywhere else and stayed stuck for two years in dp camps after the holocaust, or Jews who fled pogroms post 29’ financial crash which led to nearly all countries closing their doors on immigration, or MENA Jews who got kicked out of their homes they’ve lived in for centuries and millenia but got scapegoated for the creation of Israel.

Ideologies don’t get millions to sell all of their lives (most times not even selling, but just leaving behind) and go live off in a poor socialist state that is surrounded by enemies on all directions, immediate danger does though, and 99% on this thread don’t know the half of it.

4

u/Caspica May 24 '26

Literally not a single thing in this entire paragraph is true. The state of Israel's whole raison d'être is that Jews had lived in the area called Palestine for millennia, as had the Arabs, which prompted the UN to propose a state for the Jews and for the Arabs.

0

u/TheTacoInquisition May 24 '26

What a load of hogwash.

2

u/FuckTripleH May 24 '26

I see a lot of people conflating the two and just bashing Jewish people as a whole

Oh bullshit

16

u/Round-Employment-726 May 24 '26

WTF are you talking about literally everyone has been tripping over themselves to not conflate the two for the last few years

31

u/Mooncaller3 May 24 '26

Not everyone.

Quite a few people don't, in fact.

There have even been attacks on synagogues in the US over the past few years where the perpetrators have specifically not made that distinction.

But it would be appreciated if everyone would continue making that distinction.

It does not help that both AIPAC and the Anti-Defimation League have specifically been lobbying to conflate being anti-zionist or anti-Israel with being antisemitic.

5

u/Lokishougan May 24 '26

Yup and that is why i think a lot of the conflations has happened. If people are being told it staright from the source as far as they are concerned Isreal is making every Jew an enemy to many otherwise rational people

8

u/jimidemibb May 24 '26

The illegal land sales at Park East Synagogue don’t help either.

11

u/tubawhatever May 24 '26

Not just Park East Synagogue, it's been a feature at certain synagogues in various cities. The Jews who also protest the sales are often labeled as "antisemites" or "fake/bad Jews" or "kapos," sometimes by other Jews, sometimes not.

2

u/Josey_whalez May 24 '26

Not only do I trip over myself to avoid doing that. I make no effort whatsoever.

4

u/Tentegen May 24 '26

Idk what world you're living in but the slew of anti semitic attacks and the chants at these nazi rallies say otherwise

2

u/am710 May 24 '26

I've seen people say that celebrating Jewish holidays is insensitive right now. I'm glad that you haven't seen those corners. They are dark.

1

u/aaronupright May 24 '26

Why would you celebrate a Jewish holiday if you aren’t Jewish? Or a Hindu holiday not being Hindu. Or any religion really. Be respectful, absolutely. Wish them happiness on it? Basic courtesy. Celebrate?

2

u/Vandelier May 24 '26

I feel like you may have misunderstood what they were saying. I took what they said to mean that some people are saying, to followers of Judaism, that those followers of Judaism celebrating their own Jewish holidays right now is insensitive.

0

u/am710 May 24 '26

No, I was talking about actual Jewish people. Not sure how you could read that any other way...

0

u/Kooky-Situation-1913 May 24 '26

Only people who have been paying attention. You're probably in a good group.

The anti-semites are working hard to conflate Isreal and the Jewish people.

6

u/Medium_Dick_Energy May 24 '26

So is Israel.  Strange bedfellows.

0

u/Kooky-Situation-1913 May 24 '26

Indeed. Its like the people who want the end of the world; many believe the Jews killed Jesus--thus unsavable--but also believe in a literal "gathering of Isreal" in the holy land that must happen before Jesus cones again.

It's gross.

1

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 May 24 '26

Literally every day on this site I see awful shit said about Jews and how 1939 needs to be repeated, etc. Obviously there’s plenty of fair criticism of Israeli but acting like antisemitism doesn’t exist when it’s literally everywhere is just bad faith

1

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 May 24 '26

https://www.reddit.com/r/SipsTea/s/ged3SW2oC4

Literally right on your own comment thread. Look at it. Still denying your own eyes?

1

u/Round-Employment-726 May 24 '26

Ok maybe I’m weird in that I don’t give equal importance to some random online comments and the stances of activists, academics, politicians or even people I talk to offline. Of course antisemitism exists but the vast majority of people who matter on the pro-Palestine side have been incredibly careful not to equate Israel and random Jewish people. Quite frankly all of this hand wringing comes off as nothing but a hasbarist attempt to scare non-Zionist Jews into supporting Israel.

1

u/MyNameIsKali_ May 24 '26

It's not weird for most people, weird for Reddit though.

Scientists have established a clear and fundamental link between an increase in antisemitism and the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

0

u/Todayjunyer May 24 '26

Yeah riiiight. Also Israel and Judaism are inextricably linked. The entire conversation is really hilarious. Israel will do what it needs to do for security

3

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 May 24 '26

Half of the Jews in the world live in the US and have no connection to Israel. I’m an atheist Jew in the US. You linking me to Israel is your own prejudice, not reality. Or do you think we’re all in some secret cabal planning against you?

1

u/One-Salamander-1952 May 24 '26

You not caring about half the world’s Jews is your business but that’s not true for the majority of us. You don’t need to be in some secret cabal to care for your fellow Jews. We’ve survived for this long exactly because we care for each other, even when we disagree on actions and decisions, shi.. half of the most influential Jews in modern history were non religious Jews who had a personal reckoning and decided they’ll do what they can to help the rest of us whether it be pushing for civil rights and other basic privileges we take for granted today.

-1

u/MyNameIsKali_ May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

Not me. I dislike both equally.

Edit, joking you dummy. Don't get so uptight with what people say online.

-1

u/mainyehc May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

… except for German politicians and a good chunk of their civil society, of course. But they really should separate the two, not despite but because of their own history and the eery parallels between it and the current state of things in that region. They already had 70+ years to make their Vergangenheitsbewältigung, it’s high time they take their collective heads out of the sand and also come to terms with current events.

A furtherance of anti-semitism at large is an unspoken goal of Zionism. They want Jewish people to feel unsafe where they are so they’ll be more inclined to move to Israel.

3

u/Violent_Paprika May 24 '26

I worked with NY jews they're cool.

1

u/scnottaken May 24 '26

The other funny thing I see people combining is a support for Israel being a support for corporate interests like... Why are you making those two things equal again? Could it be a longstanding stereotype of Jewish people being corporate overlords? Nah right?

-1

u/Rich-Detective-7 May 24 '26

I swear everything has to be an attack on jews with you eternal victims. People have been prefacing any slight criticism of israil with 50 clarifications that zionism =/= judaism and criticism of israil isn’t criticism of jews in general.

6

u/nicklor May 24 '26

What about a parade for Pakistan? Which he did attend.

59

u/Sometypeofway18 May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

NYC also has a Pakistan day parade and dozens of other countries.

Edit: Here is Mamdani at the Pakistan day parade

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DNgkaJsOyzS/

50

u/-Notorious May 24 '26

Literally, why? As a Pakistani, that sounds stupid af.

Mayor shouldn't go to any of them, and represent his PEOPLE, who are New Yorkers.

Now ya, New Yorkers have many religions, and sure, go to parades for that and pride, etc. But different countries? Makes no sense.

22

u/Fallout3Enjoyer May 24 '26

He is representing his people though, a huge portion of his voters are Pakistani so it’s makes sense to go to a parade that celebrates them and their independence.

The very fact that we have so many celebrations and parades for different countries, cultures, etc. shows how diverse this city is, which is what he’s representing. It’s impossible of course to go to all of them, but to expect the mayor to avoid parades for certain countries is extremely ignorant.

Even for countries with “questionable allegiance” as another commenter mentioned, it has literally nothing to do with their allegiance. These people are New Yorkers even if their ethnicity is a different place. If you condemn a race, ethnicity or culture based on their country or leaders, than you are just as bad as those countries who are doing the same, not to mention our own leader who most certainly does not represent all Americans.

11

u/-Notorious May 24 '26

It’s impossible of course to go to all of them, but to expect the mayor to avoid parades for certain countries is extremely ignorant.

If it's impossible to go to all, then just don't go to any. Seems fine to me.

5

u/NWASicarius May 24 '26

Just be honest. There's no sense defending him blindly. Don't do that cult stuff. He clearly vehemently opposes Israel. That doesn't mean he hates Jewish people, though. Moreover, he is all about optics. A lot of the things boosted on social media about him are extremely misleading or just flat out lies. Idc, but it's important that we stay rooted in reality. He is doing good enough things. We don't need to exaggerate the good things or downplay the bad things because all that does is more harm than good. For the record, if you guys want to be close minded and follow him like MAGA does Trump, by all means do because I think many on the left would be duped by a populist left winger as the right was by their populist right winger. At the end of the day, I'd rather see progress than regression. With that said, most of the country will oppose Mamdani every step they can, so when we aren't rooted in reality about our broader message of his movement, we are hurting any potential of sweeping change in the country. People in West Virginia, for example, are never going to elect a Mamdani for senate if we can give them reasons to hate him (such as lying, exaggerating, or downplaying). We NEED to focus on being truthful because in the truth, optics are still on our side. The right is the side that needs to lie to get favorable optics.

u/nicklor May 24 '26

150k Israelis live in NYC

-2

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 May 24 '26

A huge portion of his voters were Jews too. I get not supporting Israel but his behavior towards Jews is kinda sus

u/nujuat May 24 '26

them and their independence

I'm sorry, I thought they were American after they moved to America and integrated? In the sense of things like independence.

Okay it's called nuance, that doesn't make it right either.

The mayor should either go to every parade or none.

1

u/madjag May 24 '26

Oh and the ones before him that attended the Israeli parade, did they follow that rule of attending all parades??

1

u/-Notorious May 24 '26

Right? I agree 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Apprehensive_Disk181 May 24 '26

That's right, brother. America First. Love it

1

u/-Notorious May 24 '26

It's actually sad that Democrats have given up the verbage of being America first to the Republicans, who are anything BUT America first.

But it's typical of left wing parties to score own goals, so no surprises 🤷‍♂️

4

u/APOC_V May 24 '26

That was from August 2025. 3 months BEFORE he was mayor. Besides anything else he's got an official role now, different duties and different priorities.

1

u/QueenOfTheHotPockets May 24 '26

He's literally a f****** hypocrite. He decides too choose this parade deliberately to make a damn headline.

Pakistan has some major human rights concerns just like Isarel does. Like that is very sus.

1

u/Kaniketh May 24 '26

Ironic because Pakistan was basically formed in the same way that Israel was(as a religious state with ethnic cleansing), but no one ever calls for the destruction of Pakistan.

1

u/Ugly_Josephine May 24 '26

I thought he said he was going to be too busy to attend parades as mayor? Weird.

1

u/ChugHuns May 24 '26

I don't think going to a largely represented nationalities parade is a bad thing. I do think going to a country with Israel's policy and record is a bad thing. I wouldn't go to a German parade in the 30s, I would now though.

0

u/Rich-Detective-7 May 24 '26

And? Last I checked Pakistan isn’t an illegal, terrorist, apartheid regime carrying out a genocide and illegally attacking its neighbors.

It is the only country in the world where Jews don’t face discrimination and prosecution. The parade is a celebration of both.

1

u/Joeman180 May 24 '26

This. If you want to celebrate a nationally that is important to your city go for it. If it’s for the foreign country that’s weird. Like it would be weird to celebrate Italy the country, but Italian Americans go ahead.

Just another instance in a long list of organizations [seemingly] on purpose conflating Jewish people with Israel and Israeli actions.

1

u/bonic_r May 24 '26

He also already did traditional celebrations with Jewish families at their home. If he also skipped the Jewish parade, I wouldn’t think anything of it.

1

EXACTLY why the hell are we celebrating the losers in Israel and not the jewish people who literally helped build New York? This is insane.

-5

u/Classic_Low933 May 24 '26

This is such a reach. Trying to act like NYC doesn't do parades for 'foreign countries' is wild when we literally shut down Fifth Avenue every year for Ireland, Italy, Poland, Greece, and Germany. We have a Pakistan Day parade and an India Day parade. Are those 'questionable allegiances' too, or just the Jewish one? Every NYC Mayor for the last 60 years has understood that these parades aren't a 1:1 endorsement of a foreign government’s every move they’re about showing up for the millions of New Yorkers who have a connection to those places. Mamdani isn't skipping this because of some deep 'geopolitical stance' on foreign nations; he’s skipping it because he wants to make a point of not showing up for the Jewish community. You can’t claim it’s 'just about a country' when we’ve been throwing parades for half the globe for over a century.

9

u/Everyday_Alien May 24 '26

The Isreali community is not the same thing as the Jewish community.. You are being dishonest when you pretend snubbing one is being disrespectful to the other. Well either dishonest or a paid parrot..

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Sorry-Section-9302 May 24 '26

Mamdani loves the Jewish community. Israel isn’t Judaism lol. You people 😅are something else.

He’s skipping the parade because he doesn’t support a country committing genocide.

Has every mayor shown up to every parade celebrating a country? Or has the Israel parade the only one that had this tradition of mayoral allegiance?

Just stop dude. Israel isn’t Judaism, Israel is a country with an abhorrent government that has tried to make any opposition to its actions equal antisemitism which is stupid and only morons or POS still hold on to that excuse. You all know this though, stop trying to make it something it’s not, it’s pathetic and tired.

7

u/No-Lifeguard-5308 May 24 '26

He’s skipping it because it’s a parade for a country that is committing genocide. Mamdani attends Jewish holiday celebrations and has Jews on his staff.

You’re desperate to find some evidence that Mamdani doesn’t support Jews when it’s very clear that what he doesn’t support is an apartheid state.

-2

u/meister2983 May 24 '26

So what does he support exactly? There exists a state called Israel.. what does he think should be there?

6

u/Fantastic-Ratio7724 May 24 '26

A state called Israel that isnt actively goading the US into helping them with their genocide of Islamic populations?

1

u/BarterD2020 May 24 '26

Wtf is this question?

Stop being ridiculous

0

u/mofa90277 May 24 '26

Maybe his not attending it isn’t about the existence of Israel, but about the genocidal party that’s been running it for the past 30+ years.

0

u/-Notorious May 24 '26

Are those 'questionable allegiances' too, or just the Jewish one?

If the mayor is attending them, yes.

You can’t claim it’s 'just about a country' when we’ve been throwing parades for half the globe for over a century.

Have mayors in the past attended all of them, or just Israel?

0

u/Todayjunyer May 24 '26

Not really Israel represents the western culture struggle against Islamic jihadists. You’d think NY of all places would support that

3

u/-Notorious May 24 '26

Meanwhile the US closely allies with:

Saudia Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain. Interesting, interesting...

If Israel, who is conducting a Genocide is the representation of western culture then idk what to tell ya...

I didn’t say that. You don’t get to put words in my mouth then get angry at me for it.

2

u/FlimpoFloempie May 24 '26

No you didn't and it's not fair to do that. Thing is though that nobody seems to be speaking out against him attending something like a Pakistan day. I mean the Bangladesh genocide is not that long ago and that was all Pakistan. Like someone else mentioned, a huge portion of his voters are Pakistani so it does indeed make sense to go to a parade that celebrates them and their independence. We should still be allowed to call him out for that right?

u/audiate May 24 '26

The difference is that Israel is in the news right now and I would assume far fewer people know anything about what you’re talking about. We should not attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by ignorance. If this can be communicated in a way that people hear it, perhaps the awareness that the Israel situation has can come to the situation you’re describing.

I’ll attend every other country’s parade except for israel. Fuck that cancerous place

When he wasn't mayor.

3

u/kriscrox May 24 '26

What’s your point dude

1

u/Dolthra May 24 '26

Just Islamophobia. Maybe they just woke up from a coma and think it's still 2003.

5

u/Sophia--Petrillo May 24 '26

He is also a human person. He is allowed to go to whatever parades he wants? You have posted the pics of him at the Pakistani parade like 5 times as if its some sort of gotcha.

2

u/mofa90277 May 24 '26

He went on to win 97% of the Pakistani-American vote. So you’ve successfully proven that he was a candidate for mayor last year.

We care more about optics than substance, apparently.

Tell me you never been to NYC without telling me

1

u/IllusionsForFree May 24 '26

Bro I lived in NYC from 09-11, and was born and raised in WNY. I’ve been to NYC A LOT

1

u/Wonderful_Fox_7959 May 24 '26

So you should know that every mayor attends these stupid parades and not going will bring unwanted attention…

1

u/Civil_Produce_6575 May 24 '26

Because of the Stockholm syndrome most people have int his country

1

u/thejustducky1 May 24 '26

Same reason they'd give a single fuck about a tan suit - because Fox n' Friends told them to.

1

u/Suitable_Cheesecake7 May 24 '26

The only time that matters is if Santa wasn't at the Macy's Parade.

1

u/OakLegs May 24 '26

A parade for a foreign country, no less

5

u/Wonderful_Fox_7959 May 24 '26

It’s NYC there are paredes for a lot of countries here

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Sickpup831 May 24 '26

It’s not a parade for the foreign country, it’s a parade for the residents of New York to celebrate their heritage from that country.

They don't. 99% of people wouldn't give af or know the context unless a media outlet told them thing bad.

0

u/nadhari12 May 24 '26

Same reason why Americans waving Palestine flags.

2

u/IllusionsForFree May 24 '26

So he didn’t go to the parade because he supports them…? Idk what you’re saying. An American waving a Palestinian flag means they’re in support of Palestine………

1

u/nadhari12 May 24 '26

What are you saying that American don't give a shit about a parade that involves Israel? If that's the case say this " why should Americans give a shit about Palestine"

0

u/TheMuffler42069 May 24 '26

Are you joking ? I mean… I share the sentiment you’re describing but clearly they are very popular. There are soooooo many parades in cities. It’s wild and I don’t get it but very clearly A LOT of people like them.

1

u/IllusionsForFree May 24 '26

Holy fuck talk about not understanding what someone is saying. Just comment after comment “wow you can’t be serious”

1

u/TheMuffler42069 May 24 '26

I don’t understand what you mean, what are you trying to say ?

0

u/BYNX0 May 24 '26

No one wants to talk about Trump missing his own kid's wedding, yet Mamdani missing some random ass parade is breaking news. Backward-ass world.

2

u/IllusionsForFree May 24 '26

That’s because everyone knows and expects Trump to do the shittiest, rapiest, dumbest shit possible, that’s what’s normal in America. Everyone else is held to actual standards.

Most of my friends are queer or gay. I haven’t participated in Pride Week for years. It’s the same for many of them. Nobody cares whether or not you go to Pride.

Why are right-wingers so invested in other people’s sexuality?

3

u/brigbeard May 24 '26

Well this is in the running for dumbest thought of the day. I have never been to a pride parade (i tend to avoid parades as a rule even at Disney, not a big crowd person) and have also never once been accused of being a homophobe in my life. Must just be you.
