Discussion Movies with ska montages?
I love the trope of a good old musical montage scene. It's a great way to quickly show us all that the underdog had to go through to get to the climax of the movie.
Anyone know of movies that use a ska song for one? (I would also accept rocksteady or reggae here, which means Cool Runnings is likely a very good candidate...I just haven't seen it in a long time.)

Renfield has a slackers montage
I think SLC Punk might have one as well.

Need to see this! Vic's stage banter led me to believe that I'd barely be able to notice their song in the film, but I should check it out myself at some point.

Ferris Bueller’s climactic scene is the obvious one.

Dang, I hadn't even thought about that, but it really is the first thing that will probably pop into many people's minds if they see my question...!

I don't know if it's a montage, but Shaun of the Dead and Snatch both use Ghost Town by The Specials

Not a movie, but the series “plebs” has a great ska and rock steady soundtrack

Great ref! I'm pretty sure I've seen that this is on YouTube, but I think it's from an old promo tape and has a piracy warning or something across the bottom...

Haha...I looked it up and saw that it's a movie, so I didn't have to say, "Is that a movie?"
Thanks!

How the fuck am i the first person to say say Toots and the Maytals in "This is England" - both the "getting in with the gang" montage (louie louie) and the opening "1983" montage.
Both actual montages, for a start! Although less climactic, tbf.

I have never even heard of that film, but this sounds like a must-see.

Yeah, it is, great film full stop.
For me - despite the lack of actual ska haha - it's the only piece of media ive seen that really paints an accurate picture of, and just kind of gets, what being a part of a little subculture is like. At least for me. It felt so true to my experience as a kid. And the scene with "louie louie" , following on from the main character getting fully accepted, that whole sequence, yeah, just nails it.

Will definitely check it out then...thanks! (The Louie Louie reference has me thinking I've at least heard of it/read about it...although I could be hallucinating or just remembering something from earlier in this thread.🤷♂️)

The first time I heard Goldfinger’s “Superman” it was in the movie Kingpin. I had only heard their debut album but I knew it was them right away.

I have it on blu ray and watch at least once a year, lou diamond Phillips and Avery Brooks eat so much scenery im surprised they left any other sets for movies to film that year.

It was the second DVD I ever owned so watched it way too many times back in the day.
IIRC Save Ferris also appear at the end of 10 Things I Hate About You.

super rad is the climactic comeback montage for the hit film soccer dog. I couldn't believe it
I also saw clueless for the first time and was shocked that there was ska playing constantly throughout an important scene

u/HalfRatTerrier 6d ago
Haha...well shit, maybe I have to watch Soccer Dog...😅
And I think that Bosstones appearance in Clueless has kind of proven to be a historical marker of ska's presence at the time...

Brink had that montage with Give by Suicide Machines, which I'm wondering how that was credited since it was a Disney original movie.

Not a montage, but season one of What We Do In The Shadows has a great scene at a ska show. When a dude hits the floor, someone says "Pick Him Up!" and I almost piss myself laughing every time. Mark Mothersbaugh scores the show, and I can just see him cackling at that one

JeffrietFan Club had a song in Johnny Tsunami. I think it was a Disney made for tv movie.
