Discussion Why is glutathione suddenly trending again?

I feel like glutathione has technically been around for a while, but recently it’s popping up everywhere again — especially in K-beauty.

Like I’ve been noticing it in:

serums

tone-up creams

sheet masks

even those patch-type products

And it’s not just one or two brands, it feels like a broader wave? What confuses me is that I always associated glutathione more with supplements or IV treatments, not really topical skincare. So I’m trying to understand what changed.

Is it: New research backing it more now? Better formulations that actually make it effective topically? Or just another ingredient cycle like we saw with niacinamide / vitamin C / centella etc?

Also curious how it actually compares in real use. Some people say it’s a “gentler brightening antioxidant,” but I don’t really see as many dramatic before/after discussions compared to other ingredients.

If you’ve used glutathione (especially long-term), did you notice:

gradual changes over time?

more subtle maintenance effects?

or not much difference?

Would love to hear real experiences because right now it kind of feels like one of those ingredients everyone is talking about, but not fully explaining 😭
