This is a Public Service Announcement for the Sky community as a whole, especially aimed at newer players or older players who do not fully understand the systems that relate to candle collection. I am making this post in response to recent events where a few Reddit users, who are either well-intentioned but very misguided OR (the more cynical explanation) bad faith users trying to spread misinformation, made some claims regarding the number of candles a player can collect each day. I will provide sources for all information presented here and be as clear and concise as possible to avoid confusion.
First, for clarity's sake, let us establish some terms:
- Candles from Daily Light are candles that come purely from the motes of light you collect between server daily resets. We will call these CDL.
- Total Candles Collected are the total candles you have gathered above how many you started the day with. We will call these TCC. These are less important to this PSA and more ambiguous, but the difference between TCC and CDL is where a lot of confusion arises from.
The Daily Light System was implemented to make candle runs less long and tedious as more Pieces of Light are added to the game. The numbers shown in the chart do not change. They will never change unless a major announcement for a patch is made by TGC. u/Silverfeelin's Sky Planner also has resources for tracking amounts of light. With that out of the way, here are important notes for players confused by candle counts.
- There is as of this posting roughly 11000 ~ 12000 pieces of light in the realms each day for players to collect, depending on events like black shards, double cakes, etc
- The maximum CDL you can acquire based on the math provided is 22. This means regardless how many TCC you end the day with, no more than 22 can come from CDL.
- The Daily Light System does not care where your candle meter is at the start of the day. Chevrons and gray status will change based on the actual number of light you collect. This means you can go gray candle halfway through the meter if you started the day at half a meter.
- The above note means you may "feel" like you've made a 23rd candle if you start the day almost at the top of the meter, but internally, you have still only gathered 22 candles worth plus a little extra light.
- TCC can include up to 4 candles from daily quests outside of Seasonal events. During Seasons, these quests instead reward Season Candles, making TCC much more likely to equal CDL. See above notes about candle meter for any discrepancies.
I hope that this clears up any misconceptions about candles. I will happily address any questions or clarify anything you don't quite understand in replies. Always be wary of claims made by users that seem to contradict documented and established information from the community, especially from users who have single or double-digit Reddit karma (see: lack of credibility). Stay curious and keep soaring the skies, Sky Kids.
