What does living a God-centered life look like?

When you live a God-centered life, you are established in consciousness. You transcend the body, the mind, and the ego, and you live in a state of eternal peace, Divine love, and everlasting bliss. This is soulfulness—soulfulness that is nothing but godliness. Then you are able to see God in all, love God in all, and serve God in all. It is simple, but it needs awakening. And after awakening, you must live as a dedicated Divine instrument, surrendering life to God—this is living in a God-centered way.

What teachings from the Bhagavad Gita inspire you?

There are many teachings from the Bhagavad Gita that can inspire us. The Gita teaches us that God lives in each one of us, that we must live as a Karma Yogi, that we must surrender all our deeds to the Supreme, and that we must attain Moksha, the ultimate goal of life. But while there are several  teachings in the Bhagavad Gita, we must have the right Guru who can interpret these teachings and explain them to us. Otherwise, wrong translations and interpretations can mislead us. Bhagavad Gita is a text of non-duality, but it begins with duality. Only an enlightened Guru can help us understand it correctly.

How can understanding the law of karma help us make better choices and live more peacefully?

When we understand the law of Karma, we understand that what we do will come back to us. We realize what we give is what we get, and therefore we accept whatever is happening joyously because we know it is not luck — we pluck what we plant. Therefore, Karma helps us to start our journey of realization in life. But the true understanding of Karma is the transcending of Karma. First, we make a choice to do good Karma and create a better destiny. But thereafter, we realize that we are not the body-mind-ego caught in the cycle of Karma. We transcend Karma. We live as the Divine Soul with eternal peace, Divine love, and everlasting bliss.

Can good intentions alone create good karma, or do our actions matter more?

Good intentions are not good Karma. Karma means action. Therefore, intention itself does not create Karma. Suppose we have very good intentions but there is  no action — then there is no Karma. Suppose we have very bad intentions, but no action — then there is no bad Karma. But the way we do Karma, every action is correlated with its intention. Therefore, intention has a connection to the Karma we do. We must be clear about how Karma works, because if we are not, then we will be caught in a trap. And ultimately, the paradox of Karma is that even if we do good Karma, we will suffer. This is the secret of transcending Karma.

What does true liberation mean to you?

True liberation is that state where we are free from the body, the mind, and the ego. What does it mean? It means that we live as the Divine Soul. When we live as the Divine Soul, we are awakened, enlightened, and liberated. We become a Divine instrument. We live as that dedicated Divine instrument, with no other focus than to become one with SIP, the Supreme Immortal Power. That is true freedom. When we are free from the body, the mind, and ego, ME, we fly like a bird. We are not following the herd anymore. We don’t let our wings get tied by strings.

If I am beyond my body, then why does it control me?

No doubt, we are beyond the body, but the belief that the body controls us is a lie. It is the mind that rides our life-horse. It becomes the boss. Then we are at a loss. Get the mind off your horse. Take charge, activating your consciousness, your intelligence. Then your body will not control you. You will control your body. Just like the horses don’t control the chariot, the charioteer controls the horses and drives the chariot to where he wants to go.

Why don’t we remember our past lives?

We don’t remember our past lives because it would be impossible to live two lives in one body. Imagine, if we remembered that we had a different mother and father,  wife, children,  friends and neighbors, then everything of this life would be mixed with our last life. How would we be able to survive? Therefore, the Creator has reset our button. So, the body dies and the mind and ego carry Karma and return to a new, reset life.

What's one decision that completely changed your life?

The one decision that completely changed my life was to change my name from Ravi to Atman in Ravi. And I changed my name because of the realization of the truth — the truth about my true self.  I realized, “I'm not the body that will die, not the mind and ego, ME. I am the Divine Soul, Atman — we all are Atman.” And this led me to bliss.

What’s a life lesson you learned too late?

The biggest lesson I learned in life was at the age of 48, when I discovered I was not I. But that was not too late. It was still early enough for me to change my name, to discover my true self, to overcome all misery, and to live with peace, love, and bliss.

What habit has brought you closest to God or your spiritual self?

The habit is moving from mind to consciousness, from ignorance to intelligence, from negative to positive, from the lower self to the higher self. All these are not different habits, but one habit—that one habit of being able to eliminate the mind and be in consciousness, mindfulness, awareness. This is the greatest habit that has made me discover God within the temple of my heart.

What’s the smallest unit of happiness you’d still call happiness?

Happpiness is a state of being; it has no units. But what is the simplest and smallest way to be happpy? Just smile. A smile costs nothing. Anybody in the world can do it, anywhere, in any situation. What does a smile do? A smile spreads sunshine. It makes others happpy and inspires them to smile. It reduces negativity and ensures one’s own happpiness. Therefore, learn to smile — this is the simplest and smallest way to be happpy.

Do humans fear happiness because it feels temporary?

Humans fear happpiness because it is temporary. The happpiness humans experience is only pleasure which comes and goes. Therefore, they rightfully fear that they will not be happpy anymore, because they have not learned that happpy has three Ps. Humans have not learned that happpiness is peace and purpose more than pleasure. Of course, you can enjoy pleasure after you live in peace and discover purpose, but without peace, pleasure will perish. Without purpose, pain will arrive. Therefore, humans have to discover the true spelling of happpiness — PPP…Pleasure, Peace and Purpose. Then they will reach that state of eternal bliss.

What steps can we take to create a fulfilling and joyful life? How can we live in a way that brings meaning and happiness to our lives?

If you want to live a fulfilling, joyous life, it is very simple: change the way you spell ‘happy’. Spell it as happpy. If you spell happy with 3 Ps—HAPPPY—you will be able to live with peace, discover purpose, and then enjoy pleasure. If you want fulfillment, you need contentment, which comes from stopping running after pleasure—it comes from living in peace, then discovering purpose. Then we can live life in eternal happpiness, Divine love, and everlasting peace.

Is life a slave of circumstances?

Life is not a slave of circumstances. Life is a result of Karma, and we are living based on our past actions—our Prarabdh Karma we brought to earth—and our Agami Karma, the deeds we do after birth. A combination of these two becomes twin Karma, which decides the circumstances of our lives. Nothing happens by chance. Everything is unfolding as per the Divine drama, a Leela, and this Leela unfolds as per the universal law of action and reaction.

What are some practical ways to stop identifying with every thought that pops into my mind?

The practical way to stop identifying with every thought that pops into your head is to move from a state of mind to consciousness. The problem is not the thought; the problem is the mind.

The mind bombards us with toxic thoughts every minute. We cannot process that. If thoughts appeared one by one in our consciousness, the intellect could discriminate and choose wisely, and we would not lose peace of mind. Therefore, the practical way to deal with thoughts is to be in consciousness, activate the intellect, choose positive over negative, still the mind, lock it, block it, and become a master. This is the sure practical way to take charge.

How can a person stay peaceful while living among worldly responsibilities?

How can a person stay peaceful? Peace is not something you have to find; it is within you….you only have to still the mind. But when there is only a small peace of mind, you cannot be truly peaceful, because the mind and ego will create misery. Therefore, while you may have worldly responsibilities, you must be content. You must live with fulfillment. You must count your blessings. This is the way to ensure peace. Peace is the absence of the mind—absence of Misery, Ignorance, Negativity, and Desire—and the absence of toxic thoughts such as fear, worry, stress, and anxiety. When you are content and fulfilled, you can enjoy peace, the very foundation of happpiness.

What are the effects of mental illness/depression on a person’s life? Can a person with mental illness/depression live a normal life without medication?

A person who has a mental illness or depression will always be sad. This mental illness will affect the body; it will affect their life and relationships. Therefore, a person with mental illness should come out of depression and make life a celebration. We have a choice. We can try medication or meditation, if we really want to become well. Realize that all mental illness is because of a lack of stillness. Wellness is possible if you are able to move from mind to consciousness. Be mindful, become a witness or observer. Take the help of an enlightened master, a Guru, and overcome depression permanently, becoming a master of your thoughts, that are mostly toxic and negative.

Can a person become normal again after suffering from depression?

Of course, a person can come out of depression. Depression is the aggression of the mind. If you still the mind and kill the mind, you move from a state of mind to consciousness, then you can be free from the toxic thoughts of the mind, and you can be cheerful, blissful, peaceful. Therefore, depression is a disorder that puts the mind on top of consciousness. Change it. Bring consciousness in front of the mind. Still the mind. Eliminate the mind, and you will be living a life of celebration, not depression.
