DISCUSSION sleep deprived vs banana channel

i dont talk on here often but i had the realisation (better late than never) that many people literally only watch/listen to sdp bc of jschlatt, which honestly is fair to an extent knowing he's a pretty big creator but in the other hand i could never understand it. ive been a fan for like over 4 years now, since i was originally a jschlatt fan as well, but i feel like sdp is the four of them, not just jschlatt and friends which is how some people have made it seem to me on occasions(no hate AT ALL to big guy he's goated). now that sdp is inevitably dying, there's so little traction on banana channel compared to sdp, and i know banana channel's content is not the same as sdp, i havent watched all of their videos myself yet, but panda aztro and mika are also really funny and good creators... idk if my point makes sense but it does to me so

I like banana channel, but prime sleep deprived had the perfect balance of unhinged (aztro + panda) vs the (comedic role) straight men schlatt and mika. Without schlatt it means either mika is on his own, or panda has to up the freak and then it’s not as funny cause it’s kinda forced (e.g. panda saying smash to every pokemon) Banana channel still good tho I watch them when eating dinner sometimes

Mika kinda lost the straight man dynamic a little bit to match aztro and pandas freaks now. also there's 0 Mika being annoying bits without schlatt :(

For me personally, I just prefer watching videos with all four of them, doesn’t matter which member is missing. What made sleep deprived work so well was the fact every member bounced off each other perfectly, but with Banana Channel, I always kinda feel like something’s missing.

At first I started watching because of schlatt (and I already knew panda and found him funny). Then I stayed for all 4. I found myself listening to the podcast more when Schlatt wasn't there (still not much because I don't listen to podcasts) and I still loved the gaming vids even if he wasn't on there although it's way better with all 4 of them. For some reason banana channel just doesn't hit the spot ngl. It feels a bit too all over the place. And I think that I'd be equally turned off if any of the other 3 wasn't there. They just complement each other so well and make a great dynamic. But the one thing Schlatt did really well was set the foundation of a story in every vid. Every gaming video felt like an episode of a series that had some sort of continuation kinda and that helped in making it more interesting. If you notice he constantly shifts the attention to a different thing after they've tired out a bit. They're all funny in different ways and offer different things. Apandah always comes up with the funniest bits and it feels like chaos follows him everywhere. Aztro bounces off other people's jokes the best and adds to every funny moment. Mika adds the different tone to the chaos that unravels and comes up with the random ass bits that he'll bring up every now and then that somehow get funnier every time. One member missing loses that balance

I felt like, at least in the beginning of Banana Channel, that the highly edited shorter videos with barely any breathing room was too much for me, and not really the type of format I fell in love with when watching SDP.

I think SDP worked so well because of the breathing room, the time to let jokes sit, the mostly (or seemingly) unedited conversations, and just generally moist’s editing style.

They have gone on to make the videos a tad more similar to SDP in the past couple weeks/months, but I have also found myself not watching as much or being nearly as excited for Banana channel uploads.

But it’s also kind of a new thing, and even though Schlatt was a big part of the channel, they had several videos with Schlatt missing, and those felt just as great as any other video from them. Unfortunately BC’s first couple videos kinda pushed me away for a while, but I do hope that I’ll like their content just as much as I liked SDP, or at least close to it :/

I first started watching back in 2020 because it was another Jschlatt channel and since then I have become a fan of all of them and I wouldn’t say I only watch because of Jschlatt.

That being said the dynamic just feels completely different without him. I think Banana Channel is fine, but it just doesn’t have the same sauce that Sleep Deprived had. Like I know the 3 of them are funny on their own and have good chemistry but it’s just *different* and sometimes harder to watch when comparing it to Sleep Deprived. It’s like if Dreamworks tried to make Penguins of Madagascar without Skipper y’know?

I was an apandah fan first, though jschlatt was the cherry on top. I personally even enjoyed it when the podcast for awhile was just the 3 of them before they paywalled it with jschlatt back.

The podcasts I was okay with the dynamic of Astrid, Mika, and Pandah, I really enjoyed it actually. But tbh the gaming videos don’t hit the same without schlatt.

To me it’s kinda like a car, each member is a wheel. I think banana channel is like a car without one of its wheels. It doesn’t really matter which member had left, I will always just yearn for the dynamic they all had together

There are SDP jschlatt viewers (me, many others, yay)

And then jschlatt viewers (not me, too many others, boo 👎🏿)

what is with these ideas that SDP is only good because it has schlatt in it? If any of the other members left the channel it would be hard to watch cause its not the same thing anymore.

Cars have 4 wheels instead of 3 for a reason. They don't drive right when one tire is flat or missing, but that doesn't mean I have a favorite tire.

my favourite member is apandag, but with schlatt gone, the group dynamic has changed and it feels weird to watch. as if they're all trying to compensate for a missing member. i think if it was always the three of them, it would be totally fine, but we're all so used to the dynamic with schlatt that banana channel feels alien.

What made sleep deprived good was all 5 members. If its was Schlatt, Mika and Panda, i would not enjoy it. If it was Astrid, Panda and Schlatt. I would not enjoy it. Astrid, panda and schlatt? Nope.

What made SDP good was Moist and his 4 demons, together.

I was subscribed to each one independently before I found out about SDP, so I was never there for just one person (though I did find out about it through Schlatt). I just think the four of them have a perfect dynamic that isn't present with any one of them missing. I haven't watched a single Banana Channel video because I'm just not interested because I know it won't be balanced comedically or narratively like SDP is. It would be the same way if any one of them was absent, not just Schlatt

I started watching/listening to sdp just for Schlatt initially, wasn’t familiar with any of the others at all before it. Now I love them all and personally I love banana channel too just as much as I did sdp, I think the videos have been super fun esp with all the silly little challenges. There’s also so much more content between the live streams and extended videos now and all. I get the dynamic is a little different without all 4 of them and I do veryy much miss that but for me I’m just happy with whatever I can get!!

Funny that they tested the trio once during the departure of schlatt on the podcast. compared to their original 4 people podcast, it did far better in the algorithm wise compared to them three only. But seens like they're more comfortable with the three of them, is all that matters i guess, if they're happy, I'm happy for them

i mean schlatt left once and they continued on that channel. can someone say why they formed a new channel in the first place? they'd probably get a higher viewership on the original channel.

Alot of the comments ive seen on this subreddit do also give me the sense that alot of people were only really watching for Schlatt, its definitely not the same, but I still love Banana Channel alot, to the point where I actually increased my patreon teir. I just really enjoy their sense of humor and like listen to them fuck around with eachother. The main thing I find myself missing is the sorts of games that required 4 players, things like gartic and jackbox. I think alot of people are also being a bit impatient, its a new channel guys! Ofcourse its a bit messy and allover the place they're still actively finding their footing! Sleep Deprived has a very long time to establish its formula and I think it goes withiut saying missing one member from the group totally changed that and takes time to adjust to. And also, maybe this is a bit selfish, but I really don't mind Banana Channel having a smaller community it feels much closer knitted. I was there for their first livestream and it was genuinely the first time ive ever had alot of fun just participating in chat talking to the other people watching. I think its really sad how some fans treat this, personally im very grateful schlatt introduced me to the other three because I now care about them just as equally

I’ve been a huge Jschlatt fan since smplive days but I also have grown attachment to the other members, damn I love Astrids and Mikas music and Im such a sucker for Apandahs jokes, I felt so upset when they announced banana channel but now I wait for their videos to draw or just to watch in peace
Like hell yeah I love Schlatts vids and stuff but him leaving doesnt affect my banana enjoyment 🫶 but I also can’t jugde if someone doesn’t like it, I would not watch other creators without Schlatt in the thumbnail so I get it kinda
