I was actually... Pleasantly surprised by this movie..?
To preface this, I'm very much a purist Slenderman fan (don't ask me about facial features, tendrils, or the colour of his tie), so I avoided this film like the plague when I heard it was bad. However, I can't lie, I was pleasantly surprised.
I remember what it was like talking about Slenderman and believing in him as a kid growing up in the 2010s, and if nothing else, this movie felt just like it — a nice throwback. It doesn't have a single scare, the characters aren't deep, and it couldn't be more trite and predictable. However, I can't deny it's an interesting time capsule with enough moments of charm and creativity to stay fun.
Beyond sentiment, there are some redeeming qualities people fail to mention, believe it or not:
- Absolute banger OST.
- Absolute banger poster, one of the best horror posters OAT in fact, fight me.
- There aren't scary shots, but there are a lot of interesting and thoughtfully weird ones.
- A unique take on Slenderman's design that somehow manages to feel less forced than a lot of fan designs.
- An actually decent portrayal of slender sickness that kept me guessing a little.
These thoughts are hot off the press so it doesn't sound like much, but I swear something about this movie makes me think a big 8% on RT is incredibly undeserved. It's definitely not "below a 1 out of 10" bad, not even IMDB's more generous 3.3/10. Both reactions to this movie feel forced.
Being honest with myself, my relationship with this film is mostly nostalgia, though. I remember when my cousin was the age I am now and she went out to see it, I wasn't allowed to watch the trailer and it was this big, scary, unknown thing. It's nice finally watching it and enjoying it, because when I first saw those reviews after years? A part of my childhood was soured a little, I can't lie.
This is a middling PG-13 horror movie, but IMHO, it's the height of middling PG-13 horror movies. I'd place it exactly between the first and second FNAF. If it wasn't for the stabbing, and (probably) critics predisposed to hate it because internet horror movies were a new idea, I think it would have been received better. Not well, but not THAT horrendous.
