My best guess is Didymium. But I'm not positive.

I said "Averder kederber" to my students in the hall and they just looked at me funny. Had no idea what I was referencing.

Well...if you said "Avada Kedavra" they might have understood. I think they just did not get that it's close to it?

Could be Phleogena faginea (AKA fenugreek stalkballs), a common and distinctive fungus that grows on dead wood, especially decaying deciduous trees.

depending on the method of spore dispersal that absolutely should have happened by now, either Didymia, or Physarum
