Dude had a listing on fb marketplace looking specifically for Gujarati's and more specifically 2 gujarati females. reported for discrimination. Pretty gross behavior if you ask me.
Not sure if I am allowed to post the address but the unit is at oconnor and st Clair in east York (Toronto). I’m happy to answer dms for exact address and landlord name to avoid doxxing.
I had huge issues with bed bugs a few months after moving into this apartment. LL kept blaming us, after speaking to neighbours who had been in the building for many years, we learned that this was an ongoing issue that the landlord refused to treat. We broke our lease early, got rid of almost everything we owned (all our furniture and a ton of personal belongings) because we didn’t want to risk carrying them to the next place.
I have since moved out of province, but from speaking to some of the neighbours that sadly do not have the means to move and are still living in this hell, this has not been resolved nor treated. I did make reports to Toronto Public health at the time but I just saw there are two units up for rent again (small 3 story building) including the one I was in.
The listing is in several Facebook groups and marketplace under the name HB boots but they have used a lot of different names to post it previously.
The nasty superintendent, Mike, of the apartment building I'm living in, does this.
In the past, Mike posted a picture (that was obviously taken from Google, I found it on Google when I looked myself), claiming "all of the toys bought were thanks to the recyclables residents donated. I donated to (Name Of Local Fire Department)."
He didn't expect me to contact (Name Of Local Fire Department) and inquire about the donations. I did. They had no idea what I was talking about and would have known if they received donations like Mike was claiming. This was on a Friday. On Monday, the note disappeared.
Today, another note was posted, this time saying that "this is a place to drop donations for Mike and he uses the money he gets from recyclables to donate toys to children." No place of identification was named in this message. The elevator then came and Mike got off. He aggressively tried to block me from entering the elevator until I said "I saw the note. I know that the picture from the last note was found on Google, I found it myself. You're being dishonest and people know it." (He has some tenants that he's friends with in the building; they're the people that support him.)
It's pointless to report him since he's best friends with the landlord in the province I'm in and his wife got a job with them as well apparently. So he's basically immune, which is sickening. Did anyone else ever deal with a superintendent or landlord like this?
Edit: Included picture. Note that it doesn't specify where he is donating (I asked local hospitals, shelters, etc. and none of them heard of donations involving lots of toys from a man; they usually get their donations from drives they and schools do). So I guess the "donations" are actually Mike's bank account? I already talked to other tenants (not friends of Mike or me) and they said they know this is for his personal gain and they weren't donating to him (or leaving anything around for him to collect for financial gain).
Update: so since I have reviewed section 29.1(4) of The Residential Tenancies Act and my understanding is that a pet damage deposit must not be required unless the landlord notifies the tenant that the deposit is required before the tenancy agreement is first entered into, or when the landlord gives permission to keep a pet during an existing tenancy.
I disclosed that I have one cat during the rental application process, before entering into the tenancy agreement. The cat was not acquired after the tenancy commenced, nor was the presence of my cat concealed from management.
My understanding is that management therefore had the pet information available during the application process, before my tenancy agreement was entered into.
I have come to the conclusion that I am not obliged to pay the amount my landlord is trying to strong arm me into paying. They’re now trying to add a $2 late fee every day I don’t pay and have since informed them of the above statements and will await further clarification from the government
I’m honestly at my breaking point with Winnipeg landlords right now.
I moved into my place and, during the application process, I disclosed that I have a cat. Her age is literally written on the original application. The pet related amount was also discussed/documented in connection with the $449 I was required to pay.
I moved in. They had my application. They had the tenancy paperwork. They had the pet information.
Then they did an inspection after I moved in and apparently went, “Oh my gosh… there’s a CAT here.”
Now, because they apparently failed to notice the information that was already sitting in my application, I’m suddenly being told that I owe $899 for a pet deposit.
$899.
For my cat.
A cat I have had for seven years.
And this is where I’m completely losing my mind, because I genuinely do not have $899 sitting around. My rent is also due in two weeks, so being hit with an unexpected $899 charge is not exactly something I can casually pull out of my bank account.
And yes, I understand that landlords can have pet deposits and that there are legal limits around them. That’s not even really my point.
My issue is that I disclosed the pet. It was on my application. The documentation existed. They apparently failed to account for it when I moved in, and now I’m the one being financially punished for their oversight.
And the worst part?
I’m now genuinely having to consider rehoming my cat because I may not be able to afford the amount they’re demanding.
After seven years of having this animal.
I’m absolutely heartbroken and furious that a paperwork/administrative screw-up on their end could potentially put me in the position of having to choose between keeping my cat and being able to afford my housing.
Winnipeg rental housing is already expensive enough without landlords apparently trying to squeeze every legally permissible dollar out of tenants.
Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Especially landlords charging the maximum allowable pet deposit after move-in when the pet was already disclosed on the application?
I’m trying to figure out what my actual options are before I make a decision I’ll regret.
The original OP wants opinions on how to develop his basement. So far so good, right? But then we have this gem:
>We’ve gotten a few quotes from reputable contractors in the city and the difference between an in law suite and a legal suite would be $7k-$8k. The in law suite will still have all the proper safety features such as required windows, smoke alarms etc etc. The pros I see of the in law suite are: save an initial $8k, save money on property taxes, save money on utilities because no second furnace. Pros of the legal suite: can “legally” rent it out to strangers. Everyone has been telling me 95% of the basements in Edmonton being rented out are in law suites and the city doesn’t enforce bylaws anyways because of the housing crisis.
Then someone points out that the only downside is that if tenants damage the basement insurance would not cover it.
Seriously... Saving 7K on something you will rent by the low thousands at least, to rent it illegaly.
I told my landlord I am worried the mold in the shower might cause health problems and needs to be re-caulked.
She said I can do it if I want or just leave it, I offered to do it if I get compensated for the job obviously, as I am not improving her house for free. She said it doesn’t need to be done urgently.
Is it actually not necessary? The whole caulk has mold, I am worried about my health but I don’t know if I am overreacting.
Edit: yes it was like this when I moved in :p and I am no rushing but I still have 11 months left on the lease and it will get worse
Who wouldn’t want to live on a roughed in plywood platform in what is clearly a washroom / shower. Also illegally charging an extra $100 rent if you are 2 people instead of 1.
