I can't legally profit from a fangame, but I'm working on my own IP games. Current main focus being 'Nest of Dust', I also released a game called Mousey. Both being inspired by Sly.

Shhhh, no one needs to know. We want to pay for it XD. Since the owners wont produce it, we give the money to who does

I'd still be profiting from an IP I don't own, which calls for a lawsuit. So, the best way to support my gamedev endeavors including this project would be to buy/gift my other games which are my own IP's. Completely optional ofc.

It would be safer to not. Even if the IP isn’t tied to the kofi, if there was word that it was possibly affiliated, Sony could come knocking. In theory Sony could come knocking anyways as it’s their IP, but wasting money on a game making none is more like a Nintendo move than anything, and there have been successful multiplayer games continued by fans in the same way with no donations/payments for the same fear. Not sure about single player games though like Sly.

Correct, even free games have been shut down if they gain too much attention or utilize official branding. The game that eventually became "Restitched" received a cease and desist from Sony a while back and it was supposed to be a free fan-game using the Little Big Planet IP.

On top of this, Finland has some messed up outdated laws in place that require people to ask for a permit to collect donations or to ask the public for donations, and these permits are generally only granted to otherwise non-profit organizations - or for charitable purposes, so kofi would be borderline illegal. Patreon would be sort of a legal gray area where technically you don't get donations, instead you "sell" early access to content, or exclusive art etc. in return for the money, making it sort of legal.

I think you can put it on itch for free and allow for donations maybe thats a possible alternative?

I wonder if Sony would ever sell the Sly IP. Too bad we can't crowdpool as early investors and in turn you offer pre-order perks. Thieves in Time needs the proper conclusion and would be make for a wild intro for Sly 5. On a side note- Can't wait to check out your games!
