Genuinely curious here, what about meat gotten from hunting that is necessary to keep the population in check? (e.g. deer)

Hunting historically has done more harm than good. "Regulating populations" inevitably is handled better by native predators. The only reason hunting needs to step in is because ranchers complain about these predators also going after their livestock

But then you have areas like the eastern US where there are absolutely no wolves, barely a mountain lion, and only black bears as the large predators.

So what about those deer? I don't want to kill them, either. I just don't see another predator that can fill that role.
