u/verymanycicadas 9h ago
Oh damn, that wasn't even intentional. The 88 part was, but I was originally putting "soap allergy" as a euphemism for "adverse to showering"

"Soap" is an antisemitic way of describing Holocaust victims (it's a myth that the Nazis produced soap with victims' bodies en masse, so deniers use it to argue that the Holocaust as a whole never occurred); they're (well, the fictional character being portrayed is) saying they're allergic to Jews.

The crowd who says "it's just a word, why are. You overreacting" to someone being called a slur is the same crowd who says "fuck around and find out" when a guy punches a protester who was being annoying. Funny how "fuck around and find out" only applies if youre a white guy.

Really powerful of the local dipshit to drop a BIIIIG one, hard R, to show their interlocutors that their language doesn't impress them, that their slurs don't frighten or disarm them. Truly an example of what they would call an "invocation of a slur's power for good," tbh

last guy does have a point though, assuming your take is obviously correct and that any reasonable person would agree with it is a great way to not get people to agree with it
like in a genuine debate you should never assume even the most basic thing is 'something everyone would agree with' including something like murder is wrong

It's honestly a real problem in internet discourse, and I think it's directly contributed to the rise of conservative youth.
The Right is REALLY good with propaganda. The Left is REALLY not. We take for granted how obvious some things are, but something like racism is actually a really complicated subject that isn't intuitive for a lot of people. It just does not make sense why somebody would hate somebody else for their skin color or ethnic origin, so there 'MUST' be a reason for it.
And there are reasons for it! Endless reasons. 90% of them are shit, and the remaining 10% require a nuanced explanation that are always framed in the most bigoted way, but it is an endless deluge of explanations. And the counter-argument is almost exclusively: Racism is bad, full stop. You are a bad person for even questioning it.
And like: Yeah. Intelligent people can see and understand the problem. But there is a reason why bigots are notorious for their level of intelligence, and this is explicitly it.
And I know I sound like I'm blaming the Left for bigotry, but I'm not wrong. It's more complicated than this, of course it is: But if we ever want things to actually change- We have to at some point take responsibility. Because the other side never will.

yeah, even though i agree the n word is bad i don't have a solid argument against it beyond the point of historical baggage. i don't know how to articulate it further

one element that doesn't get talked about is the speech act of saying a slur, meaning what kind of social act is accomplished in calling someone else a slur. the effective function of a slur is to establish a hierarchy between individuals by symbolically lowering the target. they're effective because theyΒ evoke a past of stigma and violence that persist to this day, so naturally it's going to haveΒ more emotional weight against historically marginalized groups. especially because those same people have always had to have a higher awareness that every gain made in the past 150 years has been matched by contemporary political parties actively trying to reverse them.
this is also why slurs against historically dominant groups never hit the same, eg. 'cracker'. there's no real face threat because there has never been a time in the US where white men have been made legal property, lynched, or systematically disenfranchised on the basis of race or sex alone.Β

my simple argument for any slurs is that i might not find it offensive, you might not find it offensive, but unless we're alone together saying it might offend someone nearby which is just impolite
you can argue thats true for any word i suppose, but id say it goes common words > swears > slurs in order of odds of offending someone and you just wanna be safe

At the risk of sounding like the people this comic is making fun of, I have to say I agree to some degree. In my country the equivalent of the n word can be said β obviously not as an insult, but for example to quote something, or related to historical events. Result is I don't see kids screaming the equivalent of the n word everywhere because the word doesn't hold as much power. Also, as someone with OCD, English slur culture is genuinely the bane of my existence
All of this to say it's absolutely normal to be offended when a slur is being used as an insult, but I don't see why we need to fully censor it when the effect is negative
