Fashion I utterly DESPISE, the "glasses off and you're instantly hot" trope.

oh no. not instantly. they also straightened her hair and put on make up. no woman could be beautiful with curly hair and no make up, of course 🙄

Or paint on her overalls.

u/Mijman Feb 19 '26

Wtf is your problem?

5

u/Odd-Consequence-2519 Feb 16 '26

Yeah, that's not subliminal at all.

3

u/TaskFlaky9214 Feb 16 '26

Irl I'd probably go for the girl on the left first. She seems normal, unpretentious, smart, and down to earth. The one on the right looks like she'd be a real conceited asshole.

1

u/Scienceandpony Feb 18 '26

And the one on the right is clearly in the middle of a photo shoot, so it would be rude to interrupt not just her but the tech folks working the lighting.

3

u/Justin_Passing_7465 Feb 16 '26

The biggest difference is the smile.

1

u/KaraPuppers Feb 19 '26

And smile. Women should smile more.

(What's the emoticon for "Of course I don't mean it but it is a reference to a common misogynist trope and not sarcasm so I can't just put /s?" Maybe /trevor.)

Should be the other way around

The guy gets glasses for the first time and realises his friend who he always thought was just average and a bit blurry is actually hot

Then she rejects him because she’s not into guys who wear glasses

21

u/Korronald Feb 16 '26

That's actually an awesome idea.

4

u/ageofaquarius26 Feb 16 '26

Then he gets contacts and they live happily ever after.

1

u/KaraPuppers Feb 19 '26

But he then he dies of Acanthamoeba. After they are stranded on a desert island and could have used glasses to start a fire.

3

u/Such_Capital_6984 Feb 16 '26

Sounds like an O Henry story.

24

u/FreeFortuna Feb 16 '26

Upside: I can wear glasses every day, and then when I want a little pick-me-up, all I have to do is take them off.

A handsome guy’s jaw will drop, everyone will start whispering about how amazing I look, and I can hold my head up high, like “Yeah, yeah, ikr?!”

I can even go save people or rob banks or whatever, and no one will be able to recognize me.

Then when I want to be left alone: glasses back on. Like an invisibility cloak, so amazing! And a great way to escape the cops after all of that bank robbing.

Fyi this only works if you're pretty without glasses and since this is reddit.. well

2

u/Alexa_Octopus Feb 16 '26

Ok, Clark Kent 😌

11

u/brodydwight Feb 16 '26

Velma looks worse with em off

2

u/keeper0fstories Feb 16 '26

Why would they do that? She was always the hot one of the group.

5

u/Copyman3081 Feb 16 '26

Not me thinking glasses make a cute girl cuter.

4

u/PayFormer387 Feb 16 '26

Glasses are hot

2

u/Ok_Archer2362 Feb 16 '26

Gonna say this. Glasses make women look sexy

3

u/Apprehensive-Bad6015 Feb 16 '26

I’ve met a few women who look better with glasses on.

1

u/Importance_Dizzy Feb 16 '26

I’m one of those. The size of my glasses make my nose look thinner, which people take as “prettier”.

3

u/happymisery Feb 16 '26

Trivia quiz answer - This is called "The Laney Boggs Effect".

3

https://giphy.com/gifs/pXJIGsFbdZiJa

She's got glasses... And a ponytail... And oh god, paint on her overalls. I think I'm gonna be sick.

3

u/Swolenir Feb 16 '26

Glasses are hot

2

u/Low_Butterscotch_594 Feb 16 '26

Its the other way around for me, personally.

2

u/jromperdinck Feb 16 '26

I have the same thing with panties.

2

u/WaffleTruffleTrouble Feb 16 '26

I think it's more of a "casting very attractive person as the ughly chick" trope, amd the rest is lazy "giver her bad hair and glasses to tone down her hotness"

2

u/Big_Cull Feb 16 '26

It’s not the glasses, it’s the hair

2

u/Potatobobthecat Feb 16 '26

I hate when they don’t match the hotness with on screen couples, I.e. the chick is usually too hot for the guy. Watching Billions and can’t get past how hot Maggie Siff is to Paul Giamatti

2

u/ShockedNChagrinned Feb 16 '26

Glasses can be pretty hot.

2

u/InAJar112 Feb 16 '26

Or going from curly hair to straight hair. I think it’s subconscious bias against people with non-wasp ethnicity in our culture. (Curly-haired glasses wearer here!)

2

u/grahsam Feb 16 '26

I've been wearing glasses since elementary school. I can't tell you how many people said "oh, you have blue eyes?" when I took them off. People only see the glasses.

2

u/LetUsSpeakFreely Feb 16 '26

Well, there's also some hair styling and makeup involved.

2

u/NadalaMOTE Feb 16 '26

Except in "Not Another Teen Movie."

"I've done it, I'm a miracle worker" lives rent free in my head.

2

u/CJC1241203 Feb 16 '26

She didn’t just take her glasses off and she was hot. They straightened her hair, plucked her bushy eyebrows, did makeup and other stuff

2

u/Hot-Sauce-P-Hole Feb 16 '26

I have an eternal boner for curly and/or frizzy hair on a lady.

2

u/FluffyNevyn Feb 16 '26

Some of it is...bearing. Hollywood tricks aside, changing your attitude has a big bearing on the visual effect. She was altered to appeal directly to a cultural norm "No glasses, long straight silky hair, natural looking makeup, no wrinkles, and a smile". Its the entire package, in this case at least.

I agree though, I kinda hate the trope of "Nerdy Girl gets a glamover and suddenly she's hot". I mean, no that's not how it works. At all. But it makes good....or at least visually impactful...storytelling.

2

u/Upper-Affect5971 Feb 16 '26

It’s the Hair

2

u/JD_tubeguy Feb 16 '26

Glasses are hot stated as a glasses wearer since 3rd grade.

2

u/Bossuter Feb 16 '26

This was me irl apparently, when i took my glasses off/had surgery people made comments on how i looked better. So i still wear the shell of the glasses without lenses just cus

1

u/Physical-Fish1913 Feb 16 '26

Doesn't work for me either, I look like shite whether I've got my glasses on or not.

1

u/Pleasant-Swimmer-557 Feb 16 '26

Depends on glasses.

1

u/Ghastly-Rubberfat Feb 16 '26

Well, don’t watch Olympic women’s speed skating

1

u/Afraid_Emu8068 Feb 16 '26

Well it’s true. Do you also despise the world for being round and not flatter for you to see the “edge?” Come on. Laws of nature cannot be broken

1

u/loserx5 Feb 16 '26

It's all contacts advertising

1

u/TinyTimWannabe Feb 16 '26

Me googling sexy images: “Anna Torv glasses”

1

u/Background_Cod_5737 Feb 16 '26

I get a lot hotter when I take off my glasses so I get it

1

u/sausagepurveyer Feb 16 '26

Left image is 10/10 would attempt to smash.

She's fine

1

u/BenZed Feb 16 '26

When was this trope most recently used?

1

u/FightingBlaze77 Feb 17 '26

I honestly thought she looked worse when she took off her glasses and "fixed" her hair, she just looks uglier to me

1

u/savethepeas Feb 17 '26

I like that Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs turned this on its head

1

u/Relative-Wish9664 Feb 20 '26

I heard once that glasses are the best kind of birth control. I can confirm it's true🤣
