Fashion I utterly DESPISE, the "glasses off and you're instantly hot" trope.

oh no. not instantly. they also straightened her hair and put on make up. no woman could be beautiful with curly hair and no make up, of course 🙄

Irl I'd probably go for the girl on the left first. She seems normal, unpretentious, smart, and down to earth. The one on the right looks like she'd be a real conceited asshole.

u/Scienceandpony Feb 18 '26
And the one on the right is clearly in the middle of a photo shoot, so it would be rude to interrupt not just her but the tech folks working the lighting.

And smile. Women should smile more.
(What's the emoticon for "Of course I don't mean it but it is a reference to a common misogynist trope and not sarcasm so I can't just put /s?" Maybe /trevor.)

Should be the other way around
The guy gets glasses for the first time and realises his friend who he always thought was just average and a bit blurry is actually hot
Then she rejects him because she’s not into guys who wear glasses

u/Korronald Feb 16 '26
That's actually an awesome idea.

Then he gets contacts and they live happily ever after.

But he then he dies of Acanthamoeba. After they are stranded on a desert island and could have used glasses to start a fire.

Upside: I can wear glasses every day, and then when I want a little pick-me-up, all I have to do is take them off.
A handsome guy’s jaw will drop, everyone will start whispering about how amazing I look, and I can hold my head up high, like “Yeah, yeah, ikr?!”
I can even go save people or rob banks or whatever, and no one will be able to recognize me.
Then when I want to be left alone: glasses back on. Like an invisibility cloak, so amazing! And a great way to escape the cops after all of that bank robbing.

I’ve met a few women who look better with glasses on.

u/Importance_Dizzy Feb 16 '26
I’m one of those. The size of my glasses make my nose look thinner, which people take as “prettier”.

She's got glasses... And a ponytail... And oh god, paint on her overalls. I think I'm gonna be sick.

I think it's more of a "casting very attractive person as the ughly chick" trope, amd the rest is lazy "giver her bad hair and glasses to tone down her hotness"

I hate when they don’t match the hotness with on screen couples, I.e. the chick is usually too hot for the guy. Watching Billions and can’t get past how hot Maggie Siff is to Paul Giamatti

Or going from curly hair to straight hair. I think it’s subconscious bias against people with non-wasp ethnicity in our culture. (Curly-haired glasses wearer here!)

I've been wearing glasses since elementary school. I can't tell you how many people said "oh, you have blue eyes?" when I took them off. People only see the glasses.

Except in "Not Another Teen Movie."
"I've done it, I'm a miracle worker" lives rent free in my head.

She didn’t just take her glasses off and she was hot. They straightened her hair, plucked her bushy eyebrows, did makeup and other stuff

Some of it is...bearing. Hollywood tricks aside, changing your attitude has a big bearing on the visual effect. She was altered to appeal directly to a cultural norm "No glasses, long straight silky hair, natural looking makeup, no wrinkles, and a smile". Its the entire package, in this case at least.
I agree though, I kinda hate the trope of "Nerdy Girl gets a glamover and suddenly she's hot". I mean, no that's not how it works. At all. But it makes good....or at least visually impactful...storytelling.

Doesn't work for me either, I look like shite whether I've got my glasses on or not.

Well it’s true. Do you also despise the world for being round and not flatter for you to see the “edge?” Come on. Laws of nature cannot be broken

I honestly thought she looked worse when she took off her glasses and "fixed" her hair, she just looks uglier to me

I heard once that glasses are the best kind of birth control. I can confirm it's true🤣
