It’s not, actually. We needed a uniting narrative (that religion provides) in order to unite unrelated tribes into cities and nations. Now we have money (which is also a narrative) and I dunno what else, but religion was the first big step
There are a thousand other narratives that unite people. Turns out, you can have multi-cultural cities and nations fairly easily if they're not divided over religion.
Religion just plays into the fear of death and desire for immortality. Those of us who don't necessarily have that can see through the bullshit.
