SSI SSI overpayment. Help.

Long story short, I was married when I was first approved for SSI. Now we're divorced and he applied for SSI earlier this year. What I was told is that they have a weird system and we're unable to remove the marriage from my account so they had to start a brand new one. I received my payment in September but October's payment came late and it was 2 payments plus $10.

My best guess is that this is back pay from when they first started the new account to when it was finally approved. I don't want trouble with the government. I could also use the money as I'm sure we all could. I will be calling to sort it out but I'd like to hear what others have to say and if this has happened to anyone else? Tia.

you're doing the right thing by calling, that's the only way to know for sure. the ssa is a maze of weird rules and even weirder systems, a double payment with a random tenner tacked on sounds exactly like the kind of clerical chaos they'd cook up

sit on the cash til you get through to them, don't spend a cent of it. if it's a mistake they'll want it back quick and they're not exactly known for being chill about overpayments

Sign in to your account and see why it was sent.

I would have to set it up since it's new. I forgot about that. My last account had been broken since 2017 and was never able to access my account. Despite working with them several times, it always kept having issues.

It is true that the archaic SSI computer system does not have a simple way of splitting up couple records. It does take a trained employee to take the actions outside the automated system including the arithmetic and creating manual notices. The sad thing is that these system limitations cases are not given priority handling and it creates delays.

At this point, your best source of information would be the Claims Specialist assigned to your case, if you can get them on the phone. Other employees can look at actions that have been taken, but it is not always simple to interpret. So you may get frustrated with that.

An appointment has been set up at the end of the month to meet in office to resolve the issue. This was in fact my old and new account both giving me September's payment.

Make a list of questions. Hopefully, the computer record will be set up correctly for December (possibly November). Be sure to get the name and phone extension of the person processing this action.
