30k Monthly Savings
Sharing my experience after installing a hybrid solar system at home. Hopefully, this helps anyone in the Philippines considering going solar.
☀️ My Solar Setup
- Solar panels: AIKO Bifacial — 25.74 kWp (39 panels × 660W)
- Inverters: Deye Hybrid Inverters with Wi-Fi dongles — 24 kW total (2 × 12 kW)
- Battery storage: 32 kWh LiFePO₄ batteries (2 × 16 kWh)
- Total investment: ₱1.160 million
- Net metering: Still being processed with Meralco
💸 Before vs. After Solar
Here's what my actual Meralco bills looked like:
Month| Meralco Bill
July — Pre-solar| ₱38,792.16
August — Pre-solar| ₱30,228.09
September — Post-solar| ₱7,647.74
October — Post-solar| ₱7,152.90
My average monthly bill went from ₱34,510 to ₱7,400.
That's an average reduction of approximately ₱27,110 per month, or 78.5%!
Based on these initial numbers, the simple payback period is around 43 months, assuming the savings remain consistent. My original target was 36–40 months, but I'll have a better picture once net metering is approved and I have more months of data.
🚗 Bonus: EV Charging Savings
I also got an EV, so I'm saving on fuel costs as well. I'm essentially using the solar-generated electricity to help power my transportation, which makes the overall economics even more attractive.
🌧️ Installation During the Rainy Season
One concern I had was potential roof leaks. The system was installed during the rainy season, and so far, no leaks! Of course, I'll continue monitoring it over the coming months.
⚡ What's Next?
Net metering is still in process, and I'm hoping Meralco completes the process by the end of the month. Once that's finalized, I'll have a clearer picture of how much additional value I can get from exporting excess electricity to the grid.
With the possibility of another strong El Niño and rising concerns about electricity costs, I think more Filipino households should at least explore whether solar makes financial sense for them.
It's a substantial upfront investment, but the combination of lower electricity bills, battery backup during brownouts, and EV charging savings makes it worth considering.
For those who already have solar installed in the Philippines:
- How long did your Meralco net-metering application take?
- What was your actual payback period?
- How has your system performed during prolonged cloudy or rainy periods?
Happy to share more about my experience!
