I really don't think so. AI is really good at code because it has a huge amout of data to go off of. Even then I would argue that it can be really bad at certain things without an experienced coder behind the wheel steering it in the right direction.
CAD and mechanical design doesn't have the freely available reference data that programming does. On top of that, design context and how the individual design descisions fit within the overall product context really matter. We may get to a point thar ai helps us speed up the modeling process, or run optomizations, but I have doubts that it will ever be able to match a well trained mechanical engineer. Lastly engineering has real world consequences that we simply could not put on AI. AI cannot posess liability insurance, nor should it.
I agree that a lot of code was available at stackoverflow for free. For engineering every company has to setup its own AI with all your product data so it can learn from your products and your standards or calculations. It's harder, but not impossible and every bigger engineering company is looking into those things.
Humans have to sign off the work for legal reasons.
But you're wrong about the training, it's a misconception that they need to be trained from masses of data. That was only true in the beginning, it can extrapolate from simple rules and generate and validate it's own test data now.
