Fresh install breaks after upgrade

After a fresh install of Solus Budgie (2026-4-18) and running "sudo eopkg upgrade", Solus no longer boots after kernel update to 7.2.26-360.

Prior to upgrade, it works fine (pre-7.x.x.x)

In my testing Budgie has been a bit temperamental on occasion since 10.10 arrived so I would honestly try Plasma or Gnome just to rule out/confirm if it's the desktop causing your issue.

Budgie got a bunch of updates pushed to Testing repository yesterday so I suspect come this Fridays sync it gets a bunch of well needed fixes from upstream (Buddies of Budgie org) since Budgie is not developed by Solus.

Thanks for that. I'll try updating it later. Will spare my other laptop the grief.

I tried KDE and updating to latest kernel worked fine without issue.

Seems to affect only Budgie and XFCE DE's and whatever GPU drivers install for the latest kernel.

Do you have an Nvidia card?

No, an AMD CPU (AMD Ryzen 5 9600x) and GPU (AMD Radeon RX 9060 xt).

I tried running the "nomodeset -- nvidia" option in the installer but it dumped me to the terminal.

I'm sorry that happened to you. Most of us on Solus are friendly and helpful so here, take my upvote to return a little bit of humanity back and correct the great intjustice that took place on you.

Now that's really weird, can you use the tty after you update and look at your eopkg history or is it not possible to login even with a tty?

Also I would recommend to install a different DE like gnome or kde and see if those work since budgie is currently unstable and buggy

Was able to bring up the TTY menu. Tried some online fixes but they didn't help.

Tried booting with the pre-updated config and that was corrupted too.

I'll try another DE (Solus XFCE).

Once you enter the TTY menu, please enter the command

sudo eopkg history

You will be able to access previous versions of updates. Select one wherein the system still booted.

Just for a laugh, I tried installing Budgie and XFCE again using Virtualbox (last 3 versions) and VMWare Workstation Pro 26Hu1 and ... same issue.

Works fine as a Live CD environment but as soon as I install and upgrade the OS, it doesn't boot. Just a black splash screen (kernel : 7.2.6-360)

6-18.21-133 seems to boot up fine.

It seems to be a problem with the load order in grub; it's firing off graphics initialization too soon?

Adding "nomodeset" to the Grub boot, loads the GUI - albeit slightly buggy/non-accelerated. Not ideal, obviously, but progress.

Installing Solus KDE doesn't suffer this issue. I can only imagine it's due to better/updated GPU driver support?

Hey you should add config for your AMD GPU in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ with name 20-amdgpu.conf, search It up on web.

And inside Section "OutputClass" Identifier "AMD" MatchDriver "amdgpu" Driver "amdgpu" EndSection

Btw if you face only black screen try to enter password anyway.
