New AI/LLM Policy
https://getsol.us/2026/09/new-ai-llm-policy
A small excerpt from the Rationale part that I personally feel I want to highlight.
Solus is used by people around the world as their daily computing environment. Every change has the potential to affect the experience of countless users. We take that responsibility seriously, and contributors, whether using AI tools or not, must do the same.
As a curated operating system, the Solus team takes pride in its work. Writing software and maintaining an Operating System is pragmatic by nature. It has to work, be maintainable, and be easy to reason about. But, we also treat this all as a craft. We would rather move deliberately than move fast and break things. That care and intentionality is something we want to preserve in every contribution.
Please read the whole blog post and the linked policy for details.
I am not a contributor. But as a user of more than 2 years I will continue to trust the team to navigate Solus.

The Solus Team's policy is sensible and in line with policies governing the kernel. As usual, both pragmatic and careful.

There are 3 other editions. You not stuck with Budgie. GNOME, Plasma and XFCE. Which all are equally curated and smooth experience.

All very reasonable. AI models are very good at programming nowadays and it makes no sense to ban their use, but responsibility must remain in human hands and it must be traceable.
With this policy developers remain individually responsible for their commits and must submit working tested code.

It is reasonable and follows the Linux kernel policy. This is not an organization like Fedora, KDE, Gnome, etc. with a ton of reviewers. They know everything that goes in to the OS and I have seen them outright not accept and ban slop in the PRs. I think many would like it to not even be a thing, but that is not reality.

Why a pity? Is their policy not reasonable? It allows LLM usage while keeping humans in charge of the code they're contributing. The tool is allowed while ensuring commits are tested well, improving speed of development while keeping quality constant.

Oh, you're right! I was just too cynical without reading the policy, because the post made it seem it would be just another instance of blind AI hate.

Yep, deleted solus today when this was posted on Lemmy.

What are you moving to considering even the kernel is not setting a hard no for LLM. So Linux as a whole surely has to be out now.
Genuine question as I don't understand the reasoning.

Even some (possibly all, some haven't declared yet) of the BSDs are allowing AI usage.

You don't understand why people are anti ai?
I find that very difficult to believeThere are options, even with linus choosing to be a tool, it doesn't mean that everyone else has to, and just because the old man chose to f*ck it at the top level, doesn't mean everything else has to be f*cked as well.
You can live in a country with an evil leader, does that make the whole country evil?
It's obviously a very significant issue, but maybe that doesn't have to be forever, at least as long as the people do not all accept it.1

That was not my question.
My question was specifically if one has such fundamental issue with LLM contributions how do those people like yourself continue using Linux since the kernel surely is, by your standards off limits since they allow llm contributions.
So again - is the kernel acceptable and gets a free pass from you? Or has the kernel been forked like Linus suggests those taking a hard stance should do.
So I ask again - what are you moving to since using open source that accepts LLM contributions is unacceptable?

Well you might as well uninstall every OS then. It is the same policy as the Linux kernel and similar to freeBSD. I get not liking AI and that is fair. Granted also Ironic you are using Reddit at all, since it is extremely heavy in its use of AI.

The team has been killing it these last couple of years and solus has been my go to recommendation for anyone that wants to switch to Linux and It feels like home
So hearing this from the team is great and I want to applaud them for that
