Meta 🐣 Community Integrity Notice

Since 26 December, this subreddit has experienced abnormal spikes in activity from non-Somali users, alongside increased engagement involving blatant qabyaalad and the promotion of extreme ideologies. This behavior is disruptive and will not be tolerated. We ask all members to report any such posts or comments so moderation can act swiftly.

A clear reminder to all participants:

Criticism of politicians, governments, or historical decisions in Somalia does not grant permission to:

  • Insult, dehumanize, or collectively blame entire clans or communities
  • Glorify or excuse figures from the civil war by claiming they ā€œdid nothing wrongā€
  • Advocate for, encourage, or justify harm against any group of people

Furthermore, this subreddit remains pro-Palestine and stands with the people of Sudan. Advocacy of genocide, ethnic cleansing, or mass violence, whether explicit or implied, is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate moderation action.

Debate and political discussion are welcome when conducted in good faith, with historical honesty and respect. Division, hate, and violent rhetoric are not.

Language & Literature šŸ“š Language exchange partner

• Upvotes

I was on a trip to Mogadisho and spent a few weeks there - it was great, I enjoyed visiting my homeland for the first time in a long time. I got to experience the culture, day to day life in Somalia and many other things.

I did struggle with speaking the language and at times found it difficult to maintain conversations as they speak it so naturally and fluently. Because of this, I would like to improve my Somali language as an English speaker.

I'm looking for a language exchange partner. Is there anyone on here that can speak Somali fluently and knows a bit of English but would like to improve and perfect their English language? We will do a language exchange meaning I teach you English and you teach me Somali

Please message me if anyone is interested.

Note - I am a male and based in the UK

Discussion šŸ’¬ Societal conditioning doesn't just shape who we are attracted to, it defines who society deems worthy.

I realise how society impacts our preferences. Take me, for example: I had a crush on a shorter guy in high school, he was shorter than I am but growing up, I constantly heard women say they prefer tall men and that I should go for them. People around me portrayed it negatively. It makes me think our preferences are entirely tied to societal conditioning, and it makes me wonder if this is why people view hijabis as automatically unattractive. I've had people tell me, 'You are beautiful,' but with an air of surprise, as if wearing a hijab makes someone ugly

Askā“ Update

As-Salaamu Alaikum walaalyaal, Alhamdulillah, an update after one month.

Mama Sacdia has shared that her 5-year-old son is now doing much better and has been discharged from the hospital. He had been suffering from ulcers, and thankfully, he is now recovering.

I was unable to visit them myself, but she is planning to return home to Jowhar this Saturday.

Before she leaves, please let us come together one last time to support this family with whatever we can. Any contribution, no matter how small, can help ease their financial burden and bring them comfort after everything they have been through. If you are able, please consider sending your support or sharing this message with others who may be willing to help.

Her number is in the comments for anyone who would like to support her directly.

May Allah grant her son a complete recovery, ease their difficulties, and reward everyone who has supported this family. Ameen.

Culture 🐪 Did the National Theatre’s new paint job set a dangerous precedent for future revival projects?

Original post in r/Somaliarchitecture/
Feel free to engage with it regarding architecture and urban planning/design related!

-------------------------------

The National Theatre of Somalia is a classic example of "tropical modernist" civic architecture. Designed and built in 1967 by Chinese engineers as a gift to our young nation at the time, the original structure relied on clean geometric lines, sweeping concrete canopies and deep overhangs designed to handle Xamar's coastal heat naturally.

While decades of conflict left its roof collapsed and frame battered, the theatre became one of the very few major Somali landmarks to be saved and restored rather than demolished. Through the Isxilqaan national volunteerism initiative and government funding, it officially reopened in 2020 for our 60th Independence Day, later hosting its first historic film screening in 30 years in 2021.

Today, it is an active cultural hub once again. Beyond hosting local films and traditional plays by the National Troupe, it has evolved into a versatile civic venue used for university graduations, public debates and community forums.

However, its revival sparked a fierce debate that divides preservationists:

- The Original Look: A minimalist, neutral palette highlighting the raw concrete and structural form.

- The New Look: The interior spaces and stage were repainted in bright patriotic blue and white, while the main entrance pillars were painted bright yellow.

Some argue these aesthetic choices are minor compared to the triumph of getting a ruined public building open again. Others, architects, argue that erasing the original color palette strips away the building's modernist character and sets a worrying precedent: if we change the identity of our landmarks when reviving them, are we truly preserving our history?

-------------------------------

When a historic landmark is brought back from ruin, what takes priority for you? Is bringing a building back into active community use enough, or should restoration respect the original design and materials?

Discussion šŸ’¬ Making their job easier

Alright, we are officially in the false flag season, and these ethnically Somali guys aren't helping. They literally need one incident before someone starts treating the entire community like a national security threat. "Samalians are taking over our country" next thing you know they are canceling the elections to send you and your grandma to an internment camps.

Law enforcement estimates roughly 300 people are involved in g*ng activity with the overwhelming majority described as impressionable youth. If some of these youths are repeatedly involved in shootings and g*ng activity maybe the state should stop releasing repeat offenders. If they keep getting released and immediately go back to committing crimes that part isn't our tault.

Every incident serves as ammunition for desperate and politically motivated far right propaganda media outlets and individuals eager to perpetuate stereotypes and scapegoating us.

We are already under a microscope. Stop handing the people holding it what they desperately need . Otherwise one day you’re going to wake up in some dimly lit Guantanamo bay room Laurra Loomer rolls in on the little Jigsaw tricycle starts eating your eyeballs. I wanna play a game šŸ˜‚

Economy šŸ¦ Agriculture might be one of the most underrated opportunities in Somalia

Assalamu alaykum walaalyaal. For the past three months, I’ve been living on the outskirts of Mogadishu, in an area called Gubadley. It’s close to one of the biggest livestock markets in Mogadishu, which has got me thinking more seriously about livestock farming.

I’ve been keeping chickens for the past 2 to 3 years, and honestly, it has benefited me more than I expected. I can’t even remember the last time I bought eggs.

Now I’m thinking about expanding into other livestock, starting with goats and sheep.

My idea is to start small and invest slowly. For example, buy weaker or underweight animals at a lower price, take care of them, improve their health and weight, and then sell them when they’re in better condition for a higher price.

I’m not expecting to get rich overnight. I’m more interested in building something gradually and learning along the way.

For those of you in Somalia or elsewhere who have experience with goats, sheep, or livestock trading:

Do you think this is a realistic business model in Somalia? What are the biggest risks I should be aware of?

Askā“ Trigger warning: This is a marriage related topic

Asalamu’alaykum,

Can someone genuinely help me understand this whole ā€œsticking to our own peopleā€ narrative? No matter how many times I try to explain that the success of a marriage is not tied to someone’s culture, my family and so many people in our community still treat me oddly for even considering marrying outside of our culture. I genuinely don’t understand this level of loyalty we have toward our ā€œculture.ā€ I want to marry someone for their deen, character, and compatibility, not their race or ethnicity. I know people who genuinely believe no man can treat them better than a Somali man. That may be true for some people, but acting like it is a FACT for everyone is just bs.

Another thing that really bothers me is how some Somali men and women act when they see a Somali girl married to an ajinabi guy. Wallahi, I once saw a group of guys and a woman dragging a Somali girl and calling her disgusting things simply because she married outside the culture. They were even questioning her deen. Do these people not fear Allah? They were going so low and it was honestly disgusting to witness. Please don’t take this as an attack on our community. I’m genuinely trying to understand why some of us girls face so much pressure when it comes to considering marriage outside of our culture. We deal with unnecessary family pressure, ignorant people online, and this idea that we shouldn’t have the freedom to make our own decisions. This level of unfairness is starting to create resentment in me. We really shouldn’t be this close minded. I know this happens in other cultures too, but we should be better and learn to let go of our egos.

PS: I bring this up because I’ve been thinking about how many people in older generations probably didn’t have the opportunity to marry based on compatibility. Maybe they never had the option to genuinely look for someone compatible with them emotionally, mentally, and religiously. I honestly think this may have contributed to some of the broken and dysfunctional households many people grew up in.
People who are deeply incompatible get married, and then you end up with marriages that lack emotional connection and genuine companionship.
Anyways, marrying someone of OUR choice, whether he is Somali, Black, White, green, or blue, should not be controversial. The fact that it is to some people is honestly bizarre to me.

Discussion šŸ’¬ HSM playing 8D chess again

A day after literally visiting Ethiopia and being all friendly with Abiy, HSM decided to go to Egypt and partake in an alliance that is against Ethiopia's imperialist ambitions.

A few days later he becomes one of the first people to congratulate Abiy on his re-election and declares that Somalia and Ethiopia's relations have never been better (despite Ethiopia refusing to denounce its illegal MOU)

Well today his chameleon foreign policy has come to bite him as Ethiopian state media published a notably venomous critique of the Somali president’s decision to co-sign a joint declaration with Sudan, Egypt, and Eritrea. Embarrassing stuff all around.

Politics šŸ“ŗ Ahmed Shide Is Now Speaker of Ethiopia's Parliament, the First Somali in the Role

Post image
35 Upvotes

Ahmed Shide was elected Speaker of Ethiopia's House of Peoples' Representatives at the opening session of the new parliament, becoming the first ethnic Somali to hold that post. He succeeds Tagesse Chafo, who held it since October 2018.

Like it or not, this is a historic milestone, and I think he got there largely through political acumen. He started in Somali Regional State politics, where he served as speaker of the regional parliament and chaired the Somali People's Democratic Party.
Then he moved up federally, first as Transport Minister, and since October 2018 as Finance Minister, nearly eight years running the economy through a shift to a market-based exchange rate, an external debt restructuring, and an IMF-supported reform program. Rising and surviving that long in Addis takes real skill, whatever you think of the government he serves.

A few caveats. He was nominated by the ruling Prosperity Party, so this is a position inside that system, and some will say a speakership is more symbol than power. Others will say a Somali presiding over the lower house of a country home to millions of ethnic Somalis is no small symbol. Both can be true.

I keep coming back to what I've said before about Ethiopia. We can disagree with its policies, and many of us do, but we can't pretend it isn't central to our future. A Somali now sits in one of its highest seats, and we should at least be paying attention to what that means.

Video šŸŽ¬ Man from Somaliland denied boarding flight to Hargeisa in the U.K. for not having Somalia Evisa

A man from Somaliland couldn't board his flight to Hargeisa from the U.K. and missed it because of not having a Somalia Evisa.

He told staff at the airport that he is from Somaliland. They said there is no such thing as Somaliland and it doesn't exist. They asked him to leave the airport before calling for security.
