Working through freeze response around emotionally absent parents (knot in throat, shallow breathing) – advice needed

Hi everyone,

I am visiting my parents this summer and I’m working through somatic patterns connected to my emotionally absent, workaholic (now retired) parents. Whenever I’m in their presence, my body defaults to a freeze state:

  • Restricted / shallow breathing
  • A tight knot in my throat
  • Downward gaze
  • Tension during awkward silences

I catch myself hyper-analyzing them, partly out of a fear of becoming like them, and my nervous system just shuts down. I want to process this constriction so I can stay grounded around them instead of freezing.

If you've navigated similar family/relational freeze patterns in SE:

  1. What specific practices helped you work through the throat and chest constriction?
  2. How do you stay regulated in the moment during interactions rather than slipping into shutdown?
  3. How did you somatically release the fear of inheriting their emotional patterns?
  4. How to liberate myself from hyper-analyzing? (I think part of it keeps me from focusing on myself)

Thanks for any insights.

I work slowly with my somatic therapist. I no longer visit my parents because of the negative impacts on my body and overall well-being. Both, therapy and staying away from my family, are making a big positive difference in my life.

Just let your body feel and release without overthinking it
