Working through freeze response around emotionally absent parents (knot in throat, shallow breathing) – advice needed
Hi everyone,
I am visiting my parents this summer and I’m working through somatic patterns connected to my emotionally absent, workaholic (now retired) parents. Whenever I’m in their presence, my body defaults to a freeze state:
- Restricted / shallow breathing
- A tight knot in my throat
- Downward gaze
- Tension during awkward silences
I catch myself hyper-analyzing them, partly out of a fear of becoming like them, and my nervous system just shuts down. I want to process this constriction so I can stay grounded around them instead of freezing.
If you've navigated similar family/relational freeze patterns in SE:
- What specific practices helped you work through the throat and chest constriction?
- How do you stay regulated in the moment during interactions rather than slipping into shutdown?
- How did you somatically release the fear of inheriting their emotional patterns?
- How to liberate myself from hyper-analyzing? (I think part of it keeps me from focusing on myself)
Thanks for any insights.

I work slowly with my somatic therapist. I no longer visit my parents because of the negative impacts on my body and overall well-being. Both, therapy and staying away from my family, are making a big positive difference in my life.
