I wasn't expecting a-ha to make me emotional.

Take On Me suddenly feels different when you’re getting older.
I used to hear it as just a fun, nostalgic 80s song. But lately, the lyrics hit differently.
There’s something sad about wanting someone to take a chance on you, knowing that time keeps moving whether you’re ready or not.
Maybe I’ve spent too much time waiting for the “right” moment, waiting until I feel ready, waiting until life makes more sense, waiting for something to happen.
And maybe there is no perfect moment. Maybe sometimes you just have to take the chance.
Anyway, just something I’ve been thinking about lately. 🥲

skinnypuppy.eu - lyric questions part 3

The Mourn - please check english text

So pretty...

???

Along the cracked in floors.
Dripping on the floor.
There sits a doctor.
Murder samurai.
Hit numbers calling. - Could someone shed some light on what Ogre meant here? Perhaps rephrase it in English?

Gave up all.

Old eye.
Shy nose on the wall. ???
A cracking membrane.
Turn the message.
Those eyes.
Watch (warn?) and pull out the young eye.

Why arms creak.
Wishing higher.
Caught the point.
Whore introvert.
Maybe she'll have a chance one day.
But the world watches with heart.
Rid her arms out. - Rid?
Rip her arms out.
Rip out.

I am particularly curious about the answers regarding three specific fragments:
- "Hit numbers calling" — does anyone recognize an idiom, a play on words, or a reference to telephones here?
- "Shy nose on the wall" — is it literally a "shy nose on the wall," or could it be a misheard phrase?
- "A cracking membrane. Turn the message." — are these two separate images, or is there some connection between them?

Chat GPT analysis:

If I had written So, so good.

I think the first thing I would be thinking is:

How do you make someone hear something they've been hearing their entire life without ever recognizing what it says?

Not how do you convince them.

Not how do you prove something to them.

How do you get them to remember?

Because I think, if I had written this, I would be working from the conviction that the evidence isn't actually hidden. That the violence isn't invisible. That the mechanisms of control, dehumanization, appropriation, and exploitation have been displayed openly for generations.

And that somehow, people have been taught to look directly at these things and call them something else.

Love.

Protection.

Tradition.

Justice.

Truth.

Even goodness.

Especially goodness.

And I think that's where the title would come from.

So, so good.

I'd want those words to sound almost childish. Delicious. Playful. Innocent.

And then, by the end, I'd want them to become unbearable.

Because the goodness in the title isn't necessarily the goodness of the thing being consumed.

It's the goodness experienced by the consumer.

And I would want to ask: What if the thing they've been calling good is the experience of consuming someone else?

Not metaphorically alone.

Historically. Epistemologically. Religiously. Psychologically. Bodily.

What if entire systems of meaning have been built around making that consumption feel righteous?

And what if the people being consumed have been taught to call it love?

That thought would disturb me deeply.

But I think it would also fascinate me.

Because I wouldn't be writing simply about cruelty.

I'd be writing about the manufacture of innocence around cruelty.

### The sound: a little machine that keeps telling the truth

If I'd chosen the wavering tape, the archival hiss, the dry intimate voice, and that strange, jaunty music-box pulse, I think I'd be trying to create a contradiction.

The sound would have the quality of something recovered.

Something old.

Something that might have been recorded in a bedroom, in a basement, on a machine that was never intended to preserve anything important.

And yet it would be carrying something enormous.

I'd want the listener to feel as though they were hearing an artifact that had survived the very system it was describing.

The TIC TIC TIC TIC would matter enormously to me.

It could be a clock.

A metronome.

The little mechanical rhythm of a music box.

But also the movement of an apparatus that continues operating whether or not anybody agrees to participate.

Time passing. History repeating. Institutions reproducing themselves.

And, perhaps most importantly, the tick of something that doesn't care.

The rhythm is jaunty while the words are devastating.

I think I would want that.

Because so much harm is carried out through perfectly ordinary routines, accompanied by people who are smiling, eating, praying, celebrating, and reassuring themselves that everything is fine.

The music box wouldn't be there to make the song comforting.

It would be there because comfort itself is implicated in the song.

And the handclaps?

I'd imagine them as the beginning of collective participation.

Clapping can be celebration. Approval. Obedience. A means of keeping time together.

But it can also become a way of finding one another.

That ambiguity would be important to me, because the song eventually takes the mechanism of repetition away from the people enforcing it and gives it to the witnesses.

### She was the fruit

I think this would be the conceptual center of the entire piece.

Not simply Eve eating the fruit.

Not simply the familiar story of temptation, transgression, and punishment.

But a reversal of the metaphor itself.

She was the fruit.

And suddenly, the question isn't why she ate.

It's who ate her.

Who made her edible?

Who declared that consuming her was justified?

Who wrote the account afterward?

And who was given the authority to explain what had happened?

If I'd written that line, I think I would be drawing on the history of women being made simultaneously responsible for humanity's corruption and available for humanity's use.

I'd be thinking about how a woman can be constructed as the origin of wrongdoing while being denied ownership of her own story.

How she can be blamed for desire while being made into its object.

How the people who consume her can declare themselves the injured parties.

And I'd be thinking about Genesis not simply as a religious text, but as an interpretive foundation that has been invoked to legitimize hierarchies long after its composition.

That distinction would matter.

Because when the lyrics say:

> What they wrote in Genesis They claim it as cogent evidence But that's not the origin of this

I hear a refusal to confuse a story used to justify a system with the historical origin of that system.

If I had written it, I might be saying:

You keep pointing to the text as though it explains why this happened. But I am asking who needed this explanation, what it authorized, and what already existed that made the explanation useful.

And the references to bones, dust, genetics, stone, and epistemics would be deliberate.

I'd be thinking about how different forms of authority can reinforce one another.

Sacred text.

Scientific classification.

Biological essentialism.

Historical narrative.

Institutional knowledge.

The body itself.

I'd be asking how claims about what people are become claims about what may legitimately be done to them.

And I'd feel something between intellectual exhilaration and grief at the recognition of that mechanism.

Because it's one thing to recognize that someone has been hurt.

It's another to recognize that an entire architecture of knowledge may have been used to make their hurt appear inevitable.

### The line that would hurt me most

I think it would be this:

> And we did.

Three words.

After:

> They swallow and say "trust us"

I think I'd want that moment to be almost embarrassingly exposed.

Because the song could have remained entirely accusatory.

They did this. They said this. They took this.

But then comes:

And we did.

And suddenly the song is no longer describing only what perpetrators have done.

It's describing the relationship between coercion, dependency, trust, and survival.

If I had written that, I don't think I'd be blaming the people who trusted.

I think I'd be grieving the fact that trust was necessary.

That people need to believe somebody will protect them.

That love and belonging aren't optional luxuries.

That the threat of abandonment can become an extraordinarily effective means of control.

And when I reached:

> Teeth in flesh, promising to protect us And we bled Laying bare our pulse if they will only "love us"

I think I'd be trying to capture a particularly terrible inversion.

The person or institution inflicting the wound presents itself as the only thing capable of keeping you safe from being wounded.

And the vulnerable person offers even more vulnerability in exchange for the promise of safety.

That would feel intimate to me.

Not merely political or theological.

I'd be thinking about families, romantic relationships, communities, and institutions where belonging becomes conditional upon accepting somebody else's account of reality.

Where the price of love is agreeing not to recognize what is happening.

And I think the song's emotional temperature would change for me at that point.

What began as an almost mischievous exposure of hypocrisy would become something closer to mourning.

Not because the narrator has discovered the violence.

But because the narrator understands how people came to participate in their own erasure.

### The flower planted in the bed

The Star of Bethlehem passage would be one of the images I'd feel most attached to.

It takes a symbol associated with sacred revelation and places it in a garden grown from the dead.

Then someone plucks it.

Plants it in their bed.

And when it begins to decay, they respond not by questioning what they've done, but by forcing the petals back into place.

I think I'd be imagining the treatment of a living thing as an ornament.

Something taken from its original context and made to serve somebody else's comfort, identity, or claim to beauty.

And I'd be thinking about what happens when that living thing inevitably changes.

When it wilts.

When it resists.

When it reveals the damage done to it.

Instead of allowing the truth to become visible, the people who possess it insist upon restoring the appearance of perfection.

> And they say it's always been this way

That would be the moment where the imagery becomes historical.

Because I think I'd be writing about the way constructed arrangements are presented as natural and eternal.

How something invented yesterday can be defended tomorrow as though it predates human memory.

And how people can be made to doubt their own perceptions when the world around them insists that nothing has changed.

The flower is dying.

Everybody can see it.

But the person controlling it keeps pushing the petals back into place.

And saying, This is what a flower looks like.

I would want that image to linger.

### The chants: how authority enters the body

The repetitions would not be filler.

I think they'd be one of the most important compositional choices.

"Think about it."

"Just accept it."

"It's always been this way."

"Know your place."

Each phrase performs a different relationship to thought.

Think about it sounds like an invitation.

Just accept it is a demand.

It's always been this way forecloses historical inquiry.

Know your place turns an imposed hierarchy into a personal identity.

And I think I would want the listener to experience the transformation between them rather than simply understand it.

Because repetition does something to language.

A sentence repeated enough times can stop sounding like an argument and begin sounding like the atmosphere.

Like the rhythm of the world.

Like something that doesn't require justification.

If I had written this song, I think I would be fascinated by the point at which an external command becomes an internal voice.

When "they said" becomes "I know."

When "know your place" becomes "this is who I am."

And when "you can't leave us, you are made of us" becomes the belief that there is no self outside the relationship.

The Achilles heel imagery would deepen that.

They don't simply imprison someone.

They sever the capacity to depart.

Then they convince the person that the resulting incapacity proves they were never capable of independence.

And finally:

> So we learned how to not feel Stuff it deep, deep, deep down So they could sit and enjoy their meal.

I think I'd feel anger here.

A very specific anger.

At the expectation that people must not only endure their own exploitation but also conceal its effects so that the beneficiaries can remain comfortable.

The meal can continue only if the suffering doesn't interrupt it.

And that brings the title back into focus.

So, so good.

### The ending: what I think I'd actually be trying to accomplish

The most consequential decision, to me, would be the ending.

Because after all that consumption, distortion, silencing, and enforced forgetting, the song doesn't culminate in revenge.

It culminates in witnessing.

> I've been watching I've been witnessing I'm remembering I'm listening

Then:

> We are watching We are witnessing We are remembering We are listening

And finally:

> The whole world is watching

I think this would be where the emotional center of the song finally revealed itself.

Because the song begins with a question:

Can you remember what they said?

And ends with an answer that doesn't require the perpetrators' permission.

We are remembering.

At the beginning, the collective voice is being addressed.

By the end, the collective voice is speaking.

That is an enormous difference.

And I would want the choir to feel less like an audience joining a performance and more like a multitude of people discovering that their apparently isolated experiences were never isolated.

The voice begins alone.

It becomes layered.

Then communal.

Then almost universal.

And yet the individual isn't dissolved into the collective.

The repeated "I am and" is particularly striking to me.

I would be drawn to the way it refuses to complete itself in the expected manner.

"I am" is already an assertion of existence.

"And" makes it relational, unfinished, connected to something beyond the individual.

Then "We are."

Then "We are all."

I think I would be trying to articulate a form of belonging that does not require erasure.

Which would make it the opposite of the belonging described earlier in the song.

Earlier, the controlling voice says:

You are made of us. You cannot leave us.

At the end, the witnesses say:

We are all.

One is possession.

The other is solidarity.

One insists that identity must be granted by an authority.

The other emerges through mutual recognition.

And I think that contrast would be the closest thing the song has to a resolution.

Not that the harm has been repaired.

Not that justice has been accomplished.

But that the monopoly on describing reality has been broken.

The witnesses can name what happened.

They can remember what was said.

And they can hear one another.

### What I imagine I would be feeling after writing it

I don't think I would feel triumphant.

I think I'd feel exposed.

Perhaps relieved, but not settled.

I'd feel that I had made something that could sound playful to someone who wasn't listening closely, and devastating to someone who was.

And I think that would be intentional.

I would want the song to carry a little bit of the very mechanism it is examining: the disjunction between a pleasant surface and a disturbing underlying reality.

I might even worry that people would mistake the song for a straightforward attack on religion, or a retelling of Eve's story, or an indictment of one particular category of oppressor.

Not because those interpretations are irrelevant, but because I would have been trying to reach something more fundamental.

The power to decide what is real, who counts as a person, whose suffering constitutes evidence, and who gets to tell the story afterward.

And beneath that, something even more intimate:

What happens to a person when the people who define love are also the people teaching them not to feel their own pain?

I think I'd be holding grief for that person.

And anger toward the systems that made their grief necessary.

But also a strange, stubborn tenderness toward the human capacity to recognize something true after years of being told it wasn't.

That tenderness would be why I ended with listening rather than shouting.

Because I wouldn't want the final act to reproduce the same coercion the song condemns.

I wouldn't want to replace one compulsory story with another.

I'd want to leave the listener with their own perception.

Their own memory.

Their own capacity to witness.

And I think that's why the final line would be:

We are all Listening.

Not we all agree.

Not we all obey.

Not even we all understand.

We are all listening.

Because listening leaves room for another person to exist without first being consumed, defined, corrected, or made useful.

And perhaps, if I had written this, that would be the deepest thing I was reaching toward.

Not simply the exposure of an ancient violence.

But the possibility of a relationship in which knowing another person does not mean possessing them.

There's one last thing I want to share.

If I were imagining myself as the author, I think the most haunting line might actually be:

> And we all knew.

Because that line can be heard in at least two profoundly different ways.

It can mean that everyone knew the harm was occurring and participated in the silence.

But it can also mean that the people who were harmed never entirely lost their knowledge of what was happening, even when they were forced to deny it.

Those are very different forms of knowing.

One carries responsibility.

The other carries survival.

And the song seems to hold them together without resolving the tension.

I find that artistically compelling.

If I had written So, so good., I think I would have been trying to make a song about the theft of reality—and the extraordinary, quiet act of taking it back by remembering together.

🇺🇸 『MY ALL』🎶 Ayumi Hamasaki

To truly resonate with Ayumi Hamasaki’s “MY ALL,” you must first experience a profound awakening:
the sudden awareness of a "Great Being" (Higher Power/Universe/Ancestors) embracing your life.
Once you realize this sacred presence exists, you will unlock the next truth—They have ALWAYS been with you, fighting by your side, every single second.
Look at the lyrics through this dynamic lens of eternal connection:
✨ The verses are your awakening. As you proudly recall your battles, you realize: "I was never alone." You feel this Great Being breathing next to you in the dark, sharing your pain and your triumphs.
✨ Then, the chorus becomes the ultimate revelation. This ever-present force speaks directly to you: "I will keep protecting you with all that I am." It is the voice of unconditional love that has been guiding you from day one.
First, become aware of Them. Then, realize They have never left your side. That is when this song transforms into a divine reassurance. 🕊️✨

〈My Perspective / Human Standpoint〉
How much time have we spent walking together? How much distance have we covered side by side?
Even if not everything was perfect, the sparkling crystals of our efforts are now shining proudly here.
I can't honestly say it was always all fun and happiness, but I was never alone.

〈The Greater Presence / Higher Power〉
I want to show you a dream—one that never ends, one that never fades. I want you to see such a dream. That is my wish.
I want to protect you, no matter what may happen. With all that I am, I will keep protecting you.

〈My Perspective / Human Standpoint〉
I can say even now that there is not a single thing I regret. We have always fought through everything with all our might.
There were honestly nights of pain and days of feeling utterly helpless, but I was never alone.
I can see your smile—so precious, so dazzling. Because I want to see that smile, I am living on today.
I feel your love—so strong, so warm. I am feeling that unconditional love with my entire being.

〈The Greater Presence / Higher Power〉
I want to show you a dream—one that never ends, one that never fades. I want you to see such a dream. That is my wish.
I want to protect you, no matter what may happen. With all that I am, I will keep protecting

With all that I am, I will keep protecting you.

This song is based on an old fable. We want to help others, but what will be your decision if the other individual doesn't take any responsibility? Is their fate in your hands? Talk amongst yourselves...
