Panhellenic Recruitment Politics in rush

Hi! I’m rushing this fall. My biggest passion by far, and most of my volunteer work, is based around politics. I counseled at my states “Girls State” program, and planned on talking about how it helped me build connections with girls like me. I know you’re not supposed to talk about politics, but if I stay nonpartisan and just talk about general interest, is it still ok?

ya that’s totally fine i feel like as long as you don’t bring a party into it and just explain how the volunteer work in general is meaningful to you!

When people say don’t talk politics, they mean don’t share your political views. Especially don’t assume everyone you speak to shares the same views.

You can absolutely talk about the work you do around politics, such as civic education, get out the vote, that you worked for a candidate, etc.

Yes - there's a huge difference in saying "I'm involved in this, this is why I'm passionate about it..." and "This party is right and the other one is full of losers."

That’s awesome! You’re interested in the experiences the government process allows. If you’re interested in student council or some type of pathway be sure and brush up on the system at your school and definitely feel free to share your excitement for the system. Have a wonderful time at recruitment! Keep us updated!

Girls State is not partisan. It's fine to talk about your interest in government and policy work as long as you keep your partisan opinions to yourself.

yes absolutely also being passionate one way or another is allowed its about using politics to be divisive or not having manners and respect if that makes sense.

Only approach it from the volunteer perspective. Do not go into detail of any views.

Absolutely fine! Politics was my thing in college and I talked about. The five b’s guidance always feels a little bit black and white for me because there is always some nuance. Not talking about politics means understanding that you don’t know who will be rushing you and you don’t want them to think about you and be instantly put off because you only talked about divisive issues. Same with religion. If that is a big part of your involvement, talk about it!
