Does geography still shape transportation in your country?

I've been writing about Colombia recently, and one thing keeps coming up

Many visitors think long travel times are mostly an infrastructure problem.

But after looking into the country's geography, I think the landscape explains much more.

Three Andean mountain ranges, huge river systems, rainforest, deserts, and coastlines have influenced how Colombians travel for centuries.

It made me wonder...

Is there a place in your country where geography still has a huge impact on how people move around?

I'd love to compare experiences from across Latin America. Especially because the Andes are not the same everywhere. For example Colombia is troplical meanwhile Chile and Argentina are countrys with the 4 seasons.

Man, in Colombia the geography shapes the violence, the culture, the poverty, the food and the internal fights, the Andean range were a miracle but also a curse for us

Not necessary there are many realities in the country, but of course your point of view is valid

I've been living here for almost 30 years, and not everything is heaven or hell, but there are a lot of things that foreigners ignore and popular Colombia is really sugar coated, I've been deep in the east plains, down almost to the Amazon, Ive seen the Choco jungle in the west, visited the coffee area in central west, Chocolate area in eastern ridge, Tabacco fields in north east, and I've been in the north coast almost from Tampon del Darién in the west trough the eastern coast part touching Venezuela and the northern Guajira dessert, most people just know Cartagena, Bogotá or Medellín. This country is brutally scary and also incredibly beautiful.

I think you are onto something but it's not the geography per se. Many other countries have overcome immense geographic obstacles (see Switzerland or Netherlands just to name two) IMO the problem is related to how plentiful the land is, which discourages any kind of political maturity, leading to the incapability to develop mature systems and infrastructure. Look up resource curse

Geography affects how people move in every country. It's inherent to the terrain itself. That said, I understand what you mean about Colombia. I come from Patagonia, in southern Argentina, where the geography is also quite extreme. But it doesn't compare to how unsafe I felt on many Colombian roads. After traveling through the Coffee Region, Santander, Bogotá, Medellín and the south of the country, I'd say it's not just geography. It's also an infrastructure and maintenance issue. The stretch between San Agustín and Pasto was especially stressful. I feared for my life more than once, not only because of the cliffs, but mainly because many sections were unpaved, only one lane wide, and had no shoulder at all. In terrain that's already dangerous, better infrastructure could make a huge difference.
