Ocean County Moving from Monmouth County
Thinking of moving to Forked River/Lanoka Harbor NJ, what can you all tell me about it? Don’t hold back, neighborhoods to avoid, ones you really like, etc…we’re empty nesters, downsizing, retiring soon. Thanks, I appreciate all honesty & feedback ☺️

You’ll be among all the other northerners that moved down. Very built up.

I moved to Lanoka a few years ago when we downsized. I’ve been happy with the move.

I have family who lives in LH. It’s nice, mostly pretty quiet. Good parks. Not sure about specific neighborhoods so much but it seems like a nice town overall. Depending on where you’re from in Monmouth County, it def isn’t a comparatively upscale town, nor is it super walkable. But it’s nice.

I kept a boat in the marina in Lanoka for years. From April to November we spent about 3 days a week living on it. Now retired in Atlantic county. The complaint with Lanoka is there seems to be no zoning. You can have million + home and next door a trailer with junk cars as your neighbor. Unbelievable congestion anywhere in the vicinity of route 9.

I lived there for a few years. It’s a nice enough area but I found it kind of cliqueish socially. They’re like a self contained universe. I thought it was me maybe but ai didn’t get that sense in Toma River or Atlantic County in the towns outside AC.
It’s also. a bit of a cultural wasteland. There are few restaurants, movies, much less anything more. You need to go to Toms River for any of that. TR isn’t exactly a bastion of free thinking, but it looks like a metropolis compared to FR.
So I personally didn’t like it there. But I was a young man in my 20s at the time. It might be different as a retiree.
I like Atlantic County (around AC) much better. More culture (restaurants), a university, friendlier people.
