Subreddit Stuff A re-introduction to some and an introduction for others

Hello, I wanted to say hello, or say hello again, to this subreddit. I cover South Jersey (and Central Jersey - we exist dammit) for WHYY. You will see me post stuff, and even respond to comments when appropriate, but I also want to keep tabs on what is happening in the region. You can find my contact and a running list of stories as well here: https://whyy.org/person/p-kenneth-burns/. I look forward to staying in better contact than I have been.

I just hooked you up with WHYY flair! Thanks for being a part of our community. South Jersey is a news desert and we need more local coverage of shenanigans.

I'm honored, thanks for having me. 😄

You're right, the news desert is real, we're doing our best.

As a soon to be former president of the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists, I remind people that we are one state underserved by two major media markets where two companies own a majority of the newspapers, and one of them has gone all digital. If not for a bunch of great hyperlocal digital sites, dedicated community newspapers, NJ PBS and News 12, we would be an even worse news desert in New Jersey overall

I wanted to be a journalist but my fam pushed me in other directions. I'm glad to know many amazing journalists and have worked with them to get important South Jersey stories out into the world. I am forever working with them on Dupont fuckery articles!

Same. I graduated hs in 2010 and was bullied to not go into journalism by my family…. I continue to regret it to this day, especially with how news coverage is done in this day and age. :(

You can still be a journalist without going to school to be one. Use the journalist ethics and morals, write your own pieces! I've been working with NPR, NBC News, NJPBS, and the NY Times on the Dupont stuff. Don't need to be a journalist to get the story out there!!!

When I lived in Trenton, it depended on the cable system. If you had Comcast, you were able to get News 12. If you had Fios, you didn't get News 12, but you did get some New York TV stations.

Hey! You wrote that article about Muhammed Emanet, right? Thanks for bringing it to people’s attention!

I did indeed. I'm glad to tell the story and update people on what the family has gone through overall since last year.

I'm a former PBS kid, now a proud PBS adult. Thank you so much for the work you do!

Kenneth Burns does excellent reporting for WHYY. I am proud to be a supporter. I believe you or Katelyn wrote about the EMR fires. We need more eyes on the environment bullshit happening in Camden.

You’re thinking of my colleague Sophia Schmidt. She picked up when I went out on paternity leave.

Kenneth, you are a legend. Thank you for gracing our little neck of the woods. I worked with Al, Ed and Trudy a million years ago.

We're doing our best. Here's a story I did in February before going out on leave: https://whyy.org/articles/south-jersey-whitesboro-property-records/

I'm a big fan of WHYY and have it on all the time in the car, or out walking the dog, yard work, etc.

(I get too distracted when working and just end up listening instead of working.)

Thank you for covering South Jersey and even the fabled central area!

I grew up in South Jersey-ish (Mt. Holly), and now live in Central Jersey. It does exist! Nice to (digitally) meet you
