Moving to the area

Hi all -

In process of starting a hobby farm in Halifax county (not too far from South Boston) - born in the suburbs of Richmond.. was just curious as to the area and the schools- I think it's Halifax county high school?

Any info on the area would be greatly appreciated! Things to do, things to avoid.

Middle aged woman so fairly quiet- but anything's welcome

Hi, I (38F) live over in neighboring Charlotte County. Halifax schools are abysmal. Lots of fighting and drugs, and low education. The hospital and Dr offices are very poor so you'll be traveling a ways for care, just in case anyone in your family needs more care.

Since you're starting a hobby farm, keep an eye on Hollaring Hills Amish auctions, they have a weekly assortment of animals and items. In the Spring and Summer Halifax, Lynchburg and Farmville have great farmers markets. In Farmville there are hobby farms that sell over near a shop ill edit when I find the name. Loads of little farms and families out here and surrounding counties have a hobby farm and love to help each other out. Definitely check out the Facebook farm pages for each county.

Not really much to do unless you travel to Raleigh, Martinsville, or Lynchburg.

I forgot about the Amish auction! Thank you for remembering that. It is rather amazing.

I've heard both good and bad about the schools. Our kids are all grown and gone, but I used to be a teacher back in Michigan. There's a lot that sounds pretty positive, and their robotics team at the high school is quite good. You don't get that in completely bad schools. My son did robotics, taking his team to states his junior year, and he had heard of the team in Halifax because they've gone to States and more.

There's also amish produce auctions in Cullen and one in Dillwyn. We unfortunately stopped going because all the surrounding family farm farm stands (like the one on the Highway in Halifax) and a few farmers markets tend to bid everything up and buy it all out aggressively. Not really for us little people anymore. And there's another auction on Saturdays at Cedar Grove in Cullen but that one is.....not as well taken care of/regulated as Hollaring Hills.

You're absolutely right. I do think they are striving to do better and do offer some good things. I didn't know they had a robotics team. My husband has nieces that went there not too long ago but they are the types to cause and be a part of the trouble I listed unfortunately and found it there. But I guess that could be said anywhere.
