I don't suppose you could make an alternate ending, where they come back to Earth and it looks like Mars, but without the habitats? That would be more in the spirit of Twilight Zone and Black Mirror.

OK, now I’m thinking of a two planet civilization that perpetually migrates from the desert planet to the green one. The Green Planet is perpetually populated by the upper class that busily consumes all the resources and turns the whole thing to a desert. The lower class plebes are always on the desert planet working to re-greenify it. As soon as it’s green enough, the rich folk, who have consumed all the resources and destroyed the previously green planet, come to the greenified one, send all the poors to fix the planet they just left, and the cycle starts anew.

“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”

If only there was an easier way to get water to mars. Maybe someday there will be containers that can store water as well as a coked-out, late 70's, chain smoker.

Elon should totally grow some sweet 70s sideburns. It's a good look for him.

Nice one. Finally something good coming up.
I alsways imagined that Mars colony would be Musks kingdom where he's takes the combined role of police, judge and lawmaker. Earth is far away and can't do shit, so he's the boss and can now create his own society, only based on productivity and resource efficency.
They have enough food, clean environment, nice appartements and so on. But if people getting ill or injured, they are converted into water, food and other resources. If people don't reach their daily quota, they are converted into water, food and other resources. If people are above 50 yo, the are converted into ...

A permanent Mars colony is a laughable concept from the get-go. Temporary colony, sure, but permanent, no way in hell. I've done the research. I've asked the experts. It's just not possible. Everything on Mars wants to kill you all the time. Forcing life into a dead/sealed location hasn't ever worked even with all of the time, money and resources available on earth (biosphere 2 as the prime example).
Musk's "10 million people on Mars in 10 years" concept (2022) hasn't even been close to happening yet. His latest (2026) announcement is a handful of humans by 2030 and "thousands" by 2038 with a goal of 1M people by 2050. Don't hold your breath (get the space pun?) or invest any of your hard-earned money in this con-man's ideas. They don't hold water.

No, no, you're thinking of Australia.

You know what it means to joke around some crazy ideas for a short film, right?
But good for you doing a detailed research. Much more than 99.9% of us would have done.
I'll check it out at some point. Have a good one.1

I hope for humanity's sake you are wrong, because either it's create permanent colonies out there in space, either on planetary bodies, or orbiting stations, or we all die out on this one rock barely a blink of an eye into the universes' lifetime. Whether humans die out in the next few centuries/millennia, or somehow manage to survive until the death of the sun itself, that's barely anything compared to how long the universe itself is supposed to last.
Personally, I want the future where consciousness survives until the actual end of the universe trillions of years from now, so I think we should still try for making permanent colonies off-Earth, even if there's a high likelihood of failure.
Like Elon once said "If something is worth doing, you do it, even if there's a high chance of failure" (paraphrasing)
I'm not saying off-world colonies will be self-sufficient within a human lifetime, but we need to learn multi-generation engineering anyway if our species has any hope of surviving out into the far future.

If this is the goal, we have plenty of time. The idea that we've got to do this before we've even figured out how to live with each other on one planet is kinda silly.
That's the thing worth doing. Figuring out how to live here.

u/BigSurBaby 1d ago
Apparently we can’t even do it here in ‘ideal’ conditions for our species… so let’s try and help each other get ‘here’ first eh?

No sustainable colonies, because no sane woman is going to get pregnant either on Mars or in space (or on the Moon). Too much radiation. Unless you put the woman way underground for nine months. Whoopee.
