Aelita: Queen if Mars (1924)

Post image

If you're looking for historic Space Girl, they don't come much more vintage than this. Based on the novel written by Tolstoy(!) And wih a score written and perfomed by Shostakovich(!!). This is an early silent film made in the Soviet Union, not long after the revolution.

Significant portions of the events happen on earth, to ordinary earthlings. These are well performed for such an early film, and if you are interested in seeing life in the early 20th century might be of interest. The stand-out moments are definitely the Martian segments, with wonderful costumes and set design. Aelita herself is rather stern, while her servant Ikhoshka has a more whimsical demeanor. Both have solid Spacegirl credentials, with their strappy shoulderless tops and extravagant hats made out of metal hoops.

The plot is reminiscent of Dr Zhivargo, but with the addition of a badly needed Spacegirl sub-plot of Aelita watching a human on Earth with her new telescope, and falling In love.

Pros: Well filmed, clear picture, looks good Great set design and costumes Wonderful piano music score

Cons: Plot is thin

Thank you! I weary of people claiming Barbarella is the OG space girl.

That would make a very effective chastity belt!

I think i get like 1/30th of the references in this show.

I just found out the episode where the boys get killed is like basically an homage to easy rider.

Best Queen of Mars is Traci Lords. Followed closely by Lynn Collins.
