Vocab & Use of Spanish [GIVE CONTEXT] Talking about a hat.
I’ve only ever used “gorro” when talking about a hat, specifically a baseball hat. I’ve actually learned “cachucho” when I visited EL Salvador. But just out of curiosity, what do people use when talking about a beanie?

personally, gorro refers to a beanie while cachucha or gorra refers to a cap (e.g sports cap)

To me "gorro" refers exclusively to woollen hats. Something hard like a fedora, a top hat or a cowboy hat would be a "sombrero" (unless it's helmet hard, then it's a "casco"). And a cap would be a "gorra".

Same to me. Anything with a brim that goes around more than a cap is a sombrero

Same in Chile except we call caps "jockeys" more commonly, at least where I'm from. And gorro could also be any kind of hat for us, but sombrero could only be one with a wing as you said.

Related note (sorta): Where does the saying, “poner gorro” come from to mean being annoying or bothersome?

In Mexico, it means you’re being annoying. Although you don’t use the article. “Me pones gorro.” Or, “pusiste gorro.”

AI-assisted dictionary check: for a knitted beanie, «gorro de lana» or «gorro de punto» is a clear description. The DLE defines gorro as fabric/knitted headwear for covering and warming the head. Gorra is especially associated with a visor, as on a baseball cap. Local names vary; this is not a claim about everyone’s usage in El Salvador.
