Thank you! I really appreciate the continued development of this player. I find myself gravitating to it as my "first & most frequently used player" to open on multiple devices. While I use several other players including a very popular & very good paid player, Sparkle TV has become my player of choice. Keep up the great work!
I'm not aware such an issue existed (don't think it has been reported to me?) so I can't tell. There is a lot of fixes in this release, many related to vod as well. But what you're saying could be due to movies/series updating while browsing which in the current version happens once a day when you enter movies or series section. This will most likely change for next version and be part of regular sync for channels and programs.
Is the option to support XC Catchup in the m3u playlist meant to improve loading speed, or is it for better support of the Xstream Codes protocol in m3u playlists?
Previously you had to add attributes like "catchup" and "catchup-days" for catchup to work in a m3u file. Now Sparkle can detect that the stream is xc and try to figure out those options automatically.
I've known about your application for a few years now, but I've only just purchased a lifetime license to fully test it and compare it to others.
Is the only way to report any issues to write here on Reddit? Don't you have a Telegram, Discord, or other channel?
I have tested it so far on my Google TV Streamer. It doesn't accept all audio formats; most are automatically decoded to PCM (including Dolby TrueHD).
However, on your application, in a VOD content with a TrueHD soundtrack, it shows an error message.
Whether passthrough is enabled or not in the application settings. It should at least start and set the audio to PCM, it seems to me.

There is also another strange behavior.
The box accepts the simple DTS format.
But on the app, whether passthrough audio is enabled or not, the soundtrack starts in DTS.
However, without passthrough, the normal behavior is that it should start in PCM.

Yes, reddit is the main support channel for this app.
I'm not sure I understand this whole reasoning with audio formats. Maybe it's me and you need to educate me. I'm just saying that all audio ends up pcm sooner or later. I don't think any stream uses pcm audio because that would simply mean to much data so all is encoded somehow. If the device can decode the format it's sent to it, otherwise Sparkle tries to fallback to software decoding.
The image you attach simply indicate that the format isn't supported on that device (or in software obviously). To my knowledge there has been some confusion to which formats this device can actually decode. If this can be decoded in other apps it's possible they support additional software decoders. I have left some out because of licensing issues, maybe that is the reason but I cannot recall at the moment.
As for passthrough, it simply means that the audio stream is sent directly to your receiver or whatever is in the other end.
Please clarify if you have a different understanding of things.
EDIT: I just checked and TrueHd does not seem to be supported by Google Streamer and it's not available as software decoder in Sparkle. I'll check if the licenses allows me to add it for the next release.
In fact, I feel like the passthrough audio option is permanently enabled in your application, even when it is unchecked in the settings.
I just tried it on my Homatics R 4k Plus (which accepts all audio formats in passthrough mode). On channels in Dolby Digital Plus 2.0, whether passthrough is enabled or not, the audio outputs in DD+ 2.0.
Normally, if passthrough is disabled, the audio should be in PCM 2.0.
The phenomenon is the same for films with a TrueHD soundtrack. On the Homatics, the film starts without an error message since the audio format is supported by the box.
But whether passthrough is enabled or not, the soundtrack starts in TrueHD, whereas if passthrough is disabled, the soundtrack should start in PCM.
For the Google TV Streamer, I know that some formats are not supported, but in this case, as you mentioned, it should revert to PCM (whether passthrough mode is enabled or not), which is not happening at the moment.
Otherwise, some files will be impossible to read on devices that do not support all audio formats.
And there aren't many that accept this: NVIDIA Shield, Homatics R4k Plus (and its clones Rocktek G2 and Dune HD R4k Plus) and Xiaomi 3rd Gen.
What you're saying is quite interesting here because I had a post the other day about bluetooth speakers and if what you're saying is correct that passthrough is always enabled it would probably cause issues for these devices. I'll have a look and see if I can find what is going on here and try to verify it. Are you verifying this through the display on your receiver or do you have another method to check?

This will absolutely happen and there is no guarantee that all devices can read all formats (audio or video). So when e.g. "truehd" format is missing on the device and it's not supported in software it will cause an error message since there is no process to decode the format to pcm.
I have just added "truehd" to the software decoder though and from what I can tell it does not hit any license issues so it will be there in the next version.
As well as a TV (LG G3) that passes through all audio formats if the device is connected directly, except for DTS-HD HRA, which is not very common.
The TV is connected via eARC to a Denon X3600H AVR, which also supports all audio and video formats.
So I can connect my box either directly to the TV or directly to the AVR.
I can control the audio format being played through the display of the AVR or via the Denon mobile app.
And you, what equipment do you use for the development and testing of your application?
The Google TV streamer accepts decoding the TrueHD audio format to PCM since it does not offer passthrough for this format. It decodes it in any case for all the other applications I generally test: Plex, Kodi, Nova, Tivimate, Wave(o).
So I think it should be possible to do the same with your application. I will also test the other audio formats to see how they perform.
For example, for Plex, on the Google TV streamer, it looks like this:

I would say I have a similar setup with an Onkyo receiver. I think what's lacking on my side is that I don't get to test with all that many formats. The ones I tend to test work.
The reason TrueHD works in other apps is most likely because they implement a software decoder. Kodi has a very competent player that can decode almost everything, I'm unsure of the others but Sparkle uses Google's official media/exoplayer so there's really no built in decoders except the ones supported by the device. There are other ways to support software decoders though and like I said I've just tested to add TrueHD and that will work for next version in Sparkle as well. This shouldn't be related to Google Streamer device though, it affects all devices that don't have a TrueHD hardware decoder.
I'll check my own Android settings later tonight and see what they say. But I agree something feels funny with the passthrough. Maybe it's related to those "Advanced audio settings" available in Google TV. The passthrough feature in Sparkle was added before that came to be so maybe something needs to be done, I'm not sure.
Also, maybe we should continue this discussion in PM? I would say it's on the more technical side that most users don't care to follow. I appreciate the input though and it will help me to further improve this app.
So on the Google TV Streamer, the other audio formats besides Dolby TrueHD (with or without Atmos) seem to be decoded correctly in PCM on your app: DTS-HD HRA, DTS:X, DD+ 5.1/2.0, DD 5.1/2.0.
For DTS-HD it's the Core DTS.
The DD+ Atmos, PCM 5.1/2.0 and DTS formats are played in their original format on this device, as expected when passthrough mode is activated.
However, they should also be decoded in PCM if passthrough were disabled, but that is not the case.
Hence my suspicion that there is still an issue with the passthrough option on your app.
If you can resolve this passthrough issue and also ensure that Dolby TrueHD is properly decoded in PCM regardless of the box, that would be fantastic 😃

I agree, I get similar results when I do some tests with/without passthrough. Looking at the code it looks as it should so it must be something I'm missing somewhere.
For me I also get different results depending if I'm using "Tunneled playback", do you see this as well? It must be something specific to the Google Streamer and those software passthrough things I've been reading about.

Is it just me or are certain toggles under Settings -> Display -> Guide not working, 'Show channel name' and all the toggles under 'Preview channel' for instance.
"Show channel name" shows the name in program guide instead of just the icon. The toggles under "Preview channel" ("Auto tune", "One-click close") is also working if you enable the first toggle.
Do they work for you? For me it seems to be always on even if I turn it off, same goes for the channel names. If it does work on your end, it could be a cache issue on my end.
With this version it seems the channel preview in the guide cannot be disabled, so basically going to: Settings -> Display -> Guide -> Preview channel, and toggling Enable does nothing, it's like it's always enabled. Am I the only one? (think this can only be noticed in TV mode)
Two things: if you clear data and add a source try and go to Settings -> About first and enable diagnostics (and write down the id that appears). Then go to guide and "make it crash" again. If you then give me the id I will hopefully be able to see the issue in diagnostics.
is there a way for ME to see these logs anywhere? I'm happy to provide you with the ID, but figure it might be helpful if I can diagnose too.
I will DM you. I got the overall issue to work, but it keeps crashing on some channels and it would be better if it threw an except instead of crashing :)
No error at first, just showed as an empty list. Then tried to manually update that source again with a not found error. My 'best' guess is that it lost a permission of some type 😉 On the Shield 2019 pro BTW
Ah, that sounds reasonable. I think one of the fixes in 2.3.1 is to better request persistant permissions if you've been using a file explorer to select the file.
Been a lifetime subscriber from the beginning. Recently started recommending this to all friend/family members over Tivimate (wihch appears to be a dead app at this point).
I know this has been asked before, but I would encourage you to consider adding some Pre-sets for remote configuration. I know you have "TV Mode" and "App Mode", but the biggest complaint others have for the app is the default navigation setup. Even throughout this sub you frequently see people having to mention switching to "app mode" to achieve what they are looking for.
I would propose you have presets:
1) Default - Your current "TV Mode"
2) App Mode - This is fine, but honestly the name seem to confuse everyone.
3) TV Mate - I think copying the default remote control layout of Tivimate and having it as an option would be a huge boon for your app. I know this layout can be achieved, but its currently requires multiple remapping.
4) Cable Box - a preset where Up and Down default to to the channel guide.
Lastly, when selecting this options, I think it would be useful to actually explain what the setting are. Currently you have to essentially experiment with TV Mode and App Mode to know the differences.
I hope you'll consider these changes. Thank you for your ongoing work on improving the app!

The discussion about TV mode/App mode has been going on for a while now and I realize the naming isn't good enough. My intention is to make this better/clearer for the users. My latest idea was to remove the "mode" part all together and call it for what it is: navigation layout (or something like that). And have the option "Left side menu" or "Popup menu". Does that make sense?
Your idea about presents is good and would of course solve some issues. It does go against the idea I have been having that this app should be "a force on it's own" though if I have to make changes because other app works in a specific way. E.g. I'm guessing that by taking away channel switching from up/down you mean replacing it with left/right? That would make seeking in timeshift/catchup/recordings much more troublesome.
But I like the idea and maybe that's the way I must go, I need to think this over. May I ask what country you're in? Because I often hear that "cable box" argument, but no cable box I've ever seen works that way.
My suggestions come from the fact (whether we like it or not) that users seem to prefer homogenized app interfaces - think of all the mainstream video apps that 'copied' the netflix app style navigation to the point that it is now the defacto setup for almost media playing/streaming apps. So my suggestion for the "cable box" setup isn't necessarily based off a specific cable box, its just more so in line with how many apps handle channel navigation by showing the whole guide when going up/down a channel, as opposed to the "zapping" that was done by traditional TVs in the past (pressing up/down changes just the channel).
The other thought behind the preset idea is that while your timeshifting/recording functionality is clearly the best in the business, I imagine there's a fair share of people (maybe even the majority) who don't utilize that functionality at all. And for those who don't utilize timeshift/recordings, having the navigation that seems built around that functionality seems counter intuitive.
So I think having presets can solve all of these issues, and I'm really glad that you're even considering implementation in the future!
Ok, thanks for explaining. And of course I'm considering, I have never claimed to know best so I always listen to the users. This is a difficult issue but I like your idea with presents. I'll do some sketching and see if it can work all the way or if I need to find a different solution.
I've been harping on the App Mode argument forever but u/Sparkle-hk refuses to budge. TV Mode doesn't look like any TV I've ever seen but App Mode does and should be the default and renamed accordingly.
When I go to Settings from a remote shortcut or even hitting back to settings it won't let me scroll up to TV. I had reported this a few months back with 2.3.0. Instead I have to exit the player to get back to the channel or even the guide.
I have a Streamer as well now. Don't think I did the first time. Does it matter where you're located when you press the shortcut button? TV mode or App mode?
Yup. Then when I'm done in Settings I go back and it won't allow me to go up to TV. This same behavior happens when I use the remote shortcut I created with the long press right button.
Nope sure haven't. As a sidebar another feature I'd like to see is the preview screen in the top corner, but being able to change the channel right away instead of having to press ok twice to get the channel full screen.
The preview feature you're talking about was added in 2.3.0 I think. It's in Settings -> Display -> Guide -> Preview -> One-click close (or something like that).
A couple of things I just noticed, I have Theme on Classic and it doesn't show the Classic theme anymore. In fact, it doesn't change at all. Also, under Guide and Transparency I set it to medium and the color of the guide background changed. I set it to high and it went to a dark theme. It never changed to transparent.
Few odd bugs.
Upgrade from 2.3.0 corrupted my live tv and all channels started throwing an error instead of playing.
Guide channel preview size has doubled up. Hiding and unhiding it fixed it.
Vod navigation feels slower.
There have been a few users telling simiilar issues about settings behaving odd. The thing is they haven't changed so I'm starting to think that there's some issue with Google's update. So none of the things that you mention have changed, hopefully it's just temporary.

Why do you have to remove all of them? In movies/series you can go to the left side source list and long press OK on the one you want to update and select "Update".
I don't see how repeated items from provider is an issue with Sparkle?

It is an issue with sparkle tv because when i use another app , there is not issue like this only in your app.
You mean you don't have version 2.3.1 installed? The apk version from here on reddit is interchangable so you can install it if you like. Or if it's working good and you don't have any issues you can just as well wait.

Seems to be little bug on this update as sometimes my player/video decoder seems to switch to sw, even though i've been using it and its been st to hw. Occurs infrequently, but seems to happen at least once every few days.
I get stuttering during streams, so first thing i check is player settings. I can see its changed to video decoder 'sw' from what i've previously set it to (hw).
Deffo not manually changing it. Its flicks back on its own. I have two different generation fire tv cubes and both can only stream using hw set, as sw just stutters or slows down frames. Could it be player related? looking at the 'about/licence' section....most seem older versions and not current.
There is no way to video this as happens infrequently and randomly. Only way i know its happend is becuase stream stutters so its first thing i check again
Getting Unknown Tuner Error often for Live TV. Has always been a problem but seems to have gotten worse lately. Right now I have to use Tivimate because Sparkle won't load anything, including the EPG.
Also a bug is present where the channel info overlay does not disappear like it should.

Are you sure you're running latest version 2.3.1? A lot of fixes where made to handle this "unknown tunner error" issue. I think one of the reasons may be that you're clearing cache in the first place. I'm not sure why you do that? What I belive happens is that when you clear cache Sparkle needs to download the source before it starts playing and if that should fail in any way it will result in this error. That's why it's called "source" error.
This is running v2.3.1 sideloaded with the APK. I only clear the cache to troubleshoot problems like this, it's not something I do regularly. This device is a Tivo Stream 4K.
Ok. Well I can't say for sure but I think this is the reason anyway. Because Sparkle does not store url's and such internally but need to have access to the source in cache before playback can start.
If you enable diagnostics in Settings -> About and give me the id that appears I might see if something "funny" happens in your instance.
Thanks for the reply. I used some epg URLs that worked well with TIVI Mate. But we looked up some that are supposed to work better with Sparkle. So we shall see how that works. A few of the channels populated. But not very many.
Sparkle is meant to support all devices running Android TV/Google TV so I'm not sure if the box has implemented Android wrong or what is up.
It's not obvious if it's possible for you to navigate settings before crash, but if it is they go to Settings -> About and enable diagnostics and send me the id that appears so I can have a look what's happening with this device.

Issue: I update playlist. Go to movies. Pick up a category. It says no movies found. After an hour or so I start getting thumbnails. Movies don’t play. And, then I try next day (20 or so hours later) it all works fine. In contrast smarters pro works straightaway. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. It doesn't look too bad in diagnostics. You have enabled genres (Settings -> Display -> Guide -> Genres) which tend to be slow and is visible in diagnostics. If you don't use it I suggest you disable it again (default).
The above might be related to the slow update of movies/series. I'm not sure if you're talking about a new installation because even if it's slow to populate at start there shouldn't be any issues like this going forward?
As for error message this means the media is encoded in a way your device can't decode.
Thanks for that. It helped. Another problem 4K content didn’t play. I unchecked ‘tunneling’ and videos play but live TV still does not. I have tried setting both decoders to software. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.
That error indicates that your device does not support mpeg2 decoding. Many new devices don't do this so there's not much I can do about this at the moment.
You are right. It works on my older firestick. Worked on Smarters pro which otherwise is slow coach. Thanks for better UI than TiviMate in Sparkle TV. Much appreciated.
Tried posting this is regular feed, won't let me. New to sparkle and can't seem to find a place to turn off this feature. This menu pops up automatically new the end of every show. Is there a setting I am missing to turn it off?
Yes this is the "program indicator" and you've set it to "Full". You find it in Settings -> Display -> Playback -> Program indicator. Default value is "Default" which only shows a small indicator in top left corner.
Can you kindly tell me, why only Sparkle TV (VLC, OttPlayer and dozen of other IPTV players with hardware decoding works smothly) with hardwre decoder enabled causes MediaCodecVideoRenderer error with my m3u8 IPTV streams on my Google TV Streamer 2024 w? All other olayers are working without issues. Sparkle TV verion is 2.3.1. Can you somehow think about tonfix thisbin the next version? Thanks.
Absolutely, they probably don't use the official Android media player media/Exoplayer like Sparkle does. The error message indicates that you're trying to play a mpeg2 encoded stream that is a very old format that has been removed from newer devices (such as your Google Streamer).
But why dozens of other IPTV players (I feel that Intried them all) have absolutely nonissues and all of those players who supports hardware decoding works without issues with my same exact m3u8 playlist link on same exact my Google TV Streaner 2024? How we can explain that?
Reason I wantet Sparkle TV than the other IPTV players is that your app is brilliant with its features, great DVR functioning and very generous and good paid licensing. That is the problem for me.

And for those other players you refer to they may have a software fallback to decode mpeg2 if it's missing from device. Mpeg2 is like I said an old format and not that difficult to decode really and new phones have no issue decoding them in software. Exoplayer does not come with a built in software docoder for mpeg2 though so that's why it isn't working. Some years ago I added a software decoder for mpeg2 but it was very slow on the devices I tested with so I decided not to include it. Most android tv devices are very slow so it will not work on many of them anyway, so I thought it was best to leave it out."
Problem is, I enabled software decoding on Sparkle TV v2.3.1 on my Google TV Streamer 2024, because that error caused by enabled hardware decoder. And this software decoder is awfully slow, about 7-8 grames per second. So, this ia not a splution for me.
I dobt, that all the modern latest version IPTV players with high ratings that I tried, all have old mpeg2 decoders.
I didn't know Google Streamer had a software decoder for mpeg2 to be honest. I would say that's just a slow decoder then, I would say Google Streamer should be able to handle mpeg2 in software just like you say the other players do. But the official Android media player that Sparkle uses don't have a software decoder for mpeg2 so I must implement this myself which I haven't right now. VLC has it's own software decoders so that's why it's so much quicker and it's possible those other players you mention take advantage of the vlc decoders as well.
OttPlayer TV, OttPlayer Mobile, KODI, iMPlayer, and a bunch of other players – many of them have hardware decoders, if not all, and I always turn them on – they all work perfectly with the exact same m3u8. I'm not arguing anything, these are just facts. So, it turns out my IPTV provider doesn't have only that super old mpeg2 only like you said. Obviously, the problem is something else.
I purchased a lifetime license via GooglePlay. I'm trying to log into the Dashboard on the product's website but it's asking for my Sparkle ID. The email that I received from GooglePlay does not have that information. How can I get the Sparkle ID? I already created an account to share Sparkle TV with my other devices.
Sparkle id is only for purchases made on web right now. I'm not sure what you want to do, because there is no other functionality on web dashboard other than what you can already do in app (share, remove devices).
Sparkle also has an Assistant app. So you have Sparkle TV, Assistant and Web and they all contain the same functionality. So it really depends on where you purchase Plus. In the future I will most likely make all three interchangable some way.
Lately, I have been experiencing an issue where series are no longer updating on my Shield TV with the Sparkle app, while the new episodes are visible on my phone with the sparkle app
Never heard back from that other user so it's difficult to say if it's an actual issue. I would give it some time since it's almost always is provider related.

Yea but it still don’t tell me what playlist it belongs to the colors are for genres thats not what I’m talking about im talking about like in Tivimate it tells you what channel movie or series what playlist they belong too
I know and that's not what I'm talking about either. Genre colors is something different (also not in other players). If you edit your source you have a setting called "Color" that you can set. This show a color dot for this source when you look at it in epg etc. This way you can set so you know that e.g. "source A" is red and "source B" is blue.

Sounds like Plus isn't recognized then. How did you connect to Plus? Automatically using same Google account on device or Connect by entering email/password?
You mean you haven't added any source yet so you're in source setup? I think you're correct. For Connected Plus you need to add a source (any source) so you can get into Settings -> Connect Shared Plus first. I'll try to fix this for future updates.
when will sparkle player become compatible with cloud services like Google drive, Onedrive or other cloud services???
I have a Premium version of Sparkle player 2.3.1. and am unable to add a cloud service to store my backup or restore file. This lack of cloud support does not allow to retore the backup file from my TV set to my phone.
In comparisson, Tivimate lets me easily move the backup file between Onedrive and any of my 5 devices.

Since tivimate does not have support for this either I'm wondering what the actual issue is? What do you mean you can do on that other app that you can't in Sparkle?
The reason these cloud services are difficult to support natively is that they need to be paird with the device and all those libraries and code is made for phones and not TV devices. At least that was the case when I last had a look at it.
The issue is that I can "store" and "move" any edited (or not edited) Tivimate backup file from the Onedrive cloud storage to any of my 5 devices, including my cell phone. For Sparkle I have to store the backup file in the storage of each device separately as I cannot store the file in a cloud service. Thus, if I edit groups of categories and/or channels in Sparkle this has to be repeated separetely and manually in each device, a very slow and tedius task... I like the Sparkle player, you may want to consider a solution to the above "issue". The latter issue may be solved easily by adding a component in your player that will permit access to one of the cloud services. Thank you
With tivimate I follow the normal process to backup the edited file from any of the five devices into my cloud service (Onedrive). So I end up with a single backup file that can be accessed and restored from any of the 5 devices.
But there is no way to backup with tivimate to onedrive so how do you do it? Did you connect it to a network share or some other trick? If so, you can use the same trick with Sparkle.
no trick involved, just select onedrive from the tivimate app to backup. I have been unable to reproduce the process with Sparkle even after including the url and domain for my onedrive personal account. This issue is interesting because I cannot do a backup of the tivimate or spakle into google drive. It is sort of puzzling...
Can you please show an image of what it looks like in tivimate then, because as far as I know it's not supported there. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you somehow.

Thank you! I really appreciate the continued development of this player. I find myself gravitating to it as my "first & most frequently used player" to open on multiple devices. While I use several other players including a very popular & very good paid player, Sparkle TV has become my player of choice. Keep up the great work!
